(Kat Lesson #3)
Grade Level: 6th

Subject Matter: Describing a Distribution

Displayed in a Histogram
Lesson Content Description:
Students will be using what they know about
frequency tables and a data set to find the relative
frequency, or percentage of the occurrence of each
frequency.
Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery:
Class notes in workbook
Guided practice
Partner work
Common Core Standard:
6.SP.B.4- Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including
dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
ELD Standard:
A. Collaborative:
1. Exchanging information/ideas: Contribute to class, group, and
partner discussions by following turn-taking rules, asking relevant
questions, affirming others, adding relevant information and evidence,
paraphrasing key ideas, building on responses, and providing useful
feedback
Common Core Lesson Objective:
Students will be able to find the relative frequency of given data and
construct a relative frequency histogram.
Assessment:
Formative:
Thumbs up/down if you understand/if you had the same response
Walking around and listening to group discussions
Summative:

Going over group work answers

Exit ticket for lesson 5 for homework due the next school day

Lesson/Assessment Modifications:
ELL:
Working in a group
Taking class notes with guided practice and scaffolding
Repeating directions
Special Needs:
Working in a group
Taking class notes with guided practice and scaffolding
Giving directions one at a time
Technology: Describe the types of technology you will be
utilizing in your lesson to create and enhance instruction. (If no
technology is used, please explain why.)
Document camera
Projector
Projection screen
LESSON PREVIEW PRIOR TO TEACHING
Prior knowledge required for this lesson/objective success
Analyzing a data set
Setting up a frequency chart
Identifying the frequency
Understanding intervals
Review sub-skills required for this lesson/objective
Finding percentage
LESSON PRESENTATION
INTO
Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation
Open workbooks to lesson 5 on page s.24
Define relative frequency and how to find it
Practice finding relative frequency and fill in a frequency table
with the given information
Answer questions that are related to relative frequency and are
specific to the chart filled out in the example
THROUGH
Step-by-Step Modeling/Presentation of the Objective
Students practice finding relative frequency on their own with a
new frequency chart filled out with a new data set
Students practice drawing their own relative frequency histogram
chart based off of the new material
Teacher goes over answers to ensure full understanding of
material
BEYOND
Independent Practice/Summative Assessment of Each Students
Performance

Exit ticket for lesson 5 is assigned for homework to be turned in
