Northgate Juice Joint

Description of Activities:
I assisted Northgate Juice Joint in pulling weeds from the gardens, watering the plants, planting
new seeds, and trimming down plants.

While assisting the Northgate Juice Joint, I attained information in regards to why they
grow the plants in their garden, leading me to the connection between plants and people. They
plant their own plants to utilize the nutrients from the plants and implement them into smoothies,
juices, salads and wraps that are sold to consumers. I did notice observable effects of the plants
that I worked with, as a few of them were not able to reach maturity due to shading and
inclement weather. The purpose of growing these plants is to retrieve ingredients and nutrients to
apply to consumer goods, therefore, it is imperative that plants reach their full maturity.
While working in the gardens of the Northgate Juice Joint, I obtained knowledge of the
benefits that plants can offer to the human body to sustain health. This particular experience did
impact my views of gardening on a personal level, making me realize how vital their nutrients
are to sustain proper health, as well as granting me with relaxed, carefree emotions while
working in the gardens. Although this experience does not impact my academic or career goals,
it definitely was enjoyable. I also realized the impact this experience gave me in regards to my

views on social and personal responsibility, learning that effective communication with
consumers is a necessity when running a horticulture-based business, as well as the personal
responsibilities that one must have to fulfill the duties necessary to maintain the health of the
plants, as well as a balanced lifestyle.
I did not experience any different cultural interactions, however, I did draw the
connection between the products sold and the types of consumers that honored their commitment
to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. My interaction with the Northgate Juice Joint helped support
their cause of using biodegradable products to minimize their carbon footprint, leaving an impact
that can be seen by those who seek a stabilized environment. Finally, my service learning
experience changed my view on global community and my personal global awareness by helping
me realize how much waste society produces daily, and how to limit our wastes.
