Re: Safe Drinking Water Samples Collected
April 19, 2016 ~ April 25, 2016
Ms. Gould:
Thank you for the opportunity to work with you to investigate Safe Drinking Water
samples collected throughout Alabama, The samples you submitted to our laboratory
were analyzed using EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and ADEM (Alabama
Department of Environmental Management) approved water quality standards and
methods. These Methods are outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 40 Part
141 (National Primary Drinking Water Regulations and the ADEM Water ‘Supply
Program Division 335.7.
The EPA and ADEM established which compounds are considered Regulated and which
compounds are considered Unregulated. The EPA and ADEM review both Regulated
and Unregulated Compounds, the EPA only established Maximum Contaminant Limits
(MCL) and Action Levels (AL) for Regulated Compounds. However, all compounds
analyzed throughout each year must be reported to the EPA, ADEM and every customer
who purchases water from a Public Water System in the form of a Consumer Confidence
Report (CCR).
This table below is only a small sample of the contaminants required to be analyzed by
‘municipalities throughout the year. This table gives you the MCL and AL for the
compounds GSI analyzed. ‘The results of each sample submitted met EPA and ADEM
approved water quality standards.Maximum

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (
A) wants you to know:
In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of
certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Fegulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water that must provide the same protection for
public health. All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least
small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that
Water poses a health risk
More linformation about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the
Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). The sources of drinking
‘water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells,
As Mater travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring
‘minerals and radioactive material, and it can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or
from human activity
Contaminants that may be present in source water include:
Mlcrohiol contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants,
septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife, Inorganic contaminants, such os salts and
metals, which ean be naturally-oecurring or result from urban stom water runoff. industrial or domestic
Nastewater discharges, oil and ges production, mining, of farming. Pesticides and herbicides, which may
come from a variety of sources such as agriculture urban storm water runoff, and residential uses. Organic
chemical contaminants, including, symhetic and volatile organie chemicals, which are by-products oF
industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water
runoff. and septic systems. Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring ot be the result of
oil and gas production and mining activities.
Important Information About Lead:
Ut present, elevated levels of lead ean cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and
young children. Lead in drinking water is primarity from materials and components associated with service
tines and home plumbing. The Ashville Water & Sewer Department is responsible for providing high
auality drinking water. but eannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components, When
Your water has been sting for several hours, you can minimize the potential fr lead exposure by fishing
‘Your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. Ifyou are concemed abvat
Guardian Systems, Ine.lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing
‘methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available Irom the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or
at htip://www.cpa.govisafewater/lead
Notes:
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population,
Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who
hhave undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some
elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infe These people should seck advice
about drinking water from their health eare providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means
to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available
from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
‘We do hope that we have been able to provide you with helpful information, Our goal as
4 commercial environmental testing laboratory is to provide legally defensible results to
all customers while adhering to EPA and ADEM. regulations.
Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at
