AIMS OF PITCHING

Improve performance
o Increase speed
o Increase accuracy

BIOMECHANICAL FRAMEWORK

Pitching action broken into 4 phases:


o Preparation
o Stride
o Delivery
o Follow through includes fielding position

PREPARATION PHASE
This phase commences from when the athlete assumes the ready to pitch position on the
pitching plate up to and including the leg drive off the pitching plate.
Stance on the plate (wide versus narrow)
Position on the plate (centred, outer edge) body mass centred over both feet.
Balanced stable position.
Weight transfer from back foot to front foot
Dynamic drive off the plate into the stride.
Lifting off the front knee.

STRIDE PHASE
This phase includes the stride from the pitching plate to the front foot contacting the ground.
The following being the key points:
o Opening of hips and shoulders
o Stride directed towards batter
o Pitching arm long (small amount of flexion at the elbow)
o Glove arm active and directed towards batter

DELIVERY PHASE
This phase includes front foot contact to release the ball
Closing of hips and shoulders.
Pitching arm coming through slightly and front of closing hips
Correct sequencing of closing hips and shoulders.
Glove hand dynamically moves back towards the body to assist with rotation of hips and
shoulders.

FOLLOW THROUGH
This phase includes from ball release to the fielding position
Pitching arm continues forward after release.
Moving into balanced fielding position.
