The Research Paper Assignment Guidelines

Ms. Fougerousses Class | Research Paper Expectations

Assignment Directions & Focused Goal

Directions: This paper outlines the assignment expectations for the research paper that you will create this
quarter. Research is an essential component of academic study. Get comfy with it, because you will be working
with it for the rest of your academic career.
Goal: Through this research paper, you will explore a human rights issue, delve into the influence of culture,
analyze the mechanisms that work within an institutionalized society, and critically discuss an issue in
contemporary society to expand our understanding.

Part One: Brainstorming & Such

1. Select the international human rights issue that you want to explore for your research paper.
2. Identify the group(s) and/or type of people whose rights are being violated as well as the group(s) and/or type
of people responsible for violating those rights (In other words, who is doing what to whom?).
3. Create a list of research questions that you will need to answer to feel thoroughly informed about the topic so
that you can educate other readers about it. You should have a minimum of five, critical, research questions.
4. In addition, determine whether there is a single story that exists about any of the groups and/or types of
people youll be discussing.
Answer the following questions:
1. What is the single story about the group(s) or the type of people you will write about?
2. What does dignity mean to this group or type of person? (Consider nationality, beliefs, religion, culture, etc.)
Select and elaborate on at least two lenses through which you analyze the meaning of dignity to the group or
type of person you will write about. Be specific.
3. Are there any known terms or depictions that are considered offensive or undignified to this group or type of
people? Explain. (In essence, you are exploring implicit practices that shed light onto ideological frameworks
within the collective consciousness of society).
4. Does your selected topic support or reinforce the single story in any way? If so, how? Explain.
5. What are some alternative ways to discuss this human rights issue without relying on or inadvertently
reinforcing the single story?

Part Two: Research & All That Jazz

You will need to research your human rights issue and locate at least five different resources (At least five,
does that mean you can use more than five sources? Yes.) Two (2) of these sources must be in the form of
books. The other three (3) resources can be electronic or digitally documented online. Use the handout provided
to help you document and manage the research that you gather.

Part Three: The Much Loved Outline

Once you have gathered your research you will make a standard outline (using the format I provide). This will
be an extension of both your research and brainstorming. In your outline, your topic sentences and thesis will be
used to answer and build upon those research questions you created before you gathered the support.

Part Four: Diverting Drafting Bliss

Assignment: Write a research paper (minimum 3 pages (750 word count) | maximum 6 pages (1500 word
count)) that critically analyzes the human rights issue that pervades society and works to perpetuate or
deconstruct the single story of a particular group of people or type of person. (P.S. I know that this is
ambiguous I want it to be that way.) You are expected to have a rough draft, the brainstorming information,
the beautifully crafted final draft, and a works cited page.

Pertinent Background Knowledge

Understanding Ideologies. An ideology is a set of practices and institutions that sustain an individuals
imaginary relationship to his or her material existence (Althusser 693). The imaginary relationship that
Althusser refers to is an ideology (thoughts we have in our head). Althusser explains material existence,
referring to the actions that convey or give insight into the thoughts that we have in our head. So, basically, an
ideology is the underlying and prevalent collectively and implicitly accepted idea that guides actions by laying
low in the framework of society.
Human Rights. You will select an ideology, from the list provided, to research in depth. You will need to have
five external resources. In this paper, you will be expected to provide an extensive explanation of the human
rights issue you choose. Your thesis statement should express how the ideology influences perspectives in
society and in literature. Each consecutive paragraph will exemplify and build from your thesis statement.
Consider: There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming
the other way, who nods at them and says, Morning, boys, how's the water? And the two young fish swim on
for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, What the hell is water? (DFW).
The immediate point of the fish story is that the most obvious, ubiquitous, important realities are often the ones
that are the hardest to see and talk about. Stated as an English sentence, of course, this is just a banal platitude
but the fact is that, in the day-to-day trenches of adult existence, banal platitudes can have life-or-death
importance. (DFW).

The Writing Process (in a 30 Second Glance):

Goal 1: Select a human rights issue. Brainstorm and create research questions.
Goal 2: Gather a minimum of 5 resources- 2 must be books and 3 can be online resources.
Goal 3: Pre-Write: Create an outline organizing thoughts (this must be formatted correctly).
Goal 4: Complete the guided research handout to document & manage research.
Goal 5: Create the rough draft (Include topic sentences, evidence, and the thesis statement).
Goal 6: Write final draft with a strong central thesis backed by significant support gathered through research
and integrated accordingly- MLA format.
