like,NoneofthesebuildingswereherewhenIwasgrowingup!.Developmentofcultureand
businesshasputAustinonthemapandtrulyalteredthistowninbothgoodwaysandbad.
However,oneofthemostdrasticchangesofallhasbeenthesemirecent,massivepopulation
boom.Presently,Austincontinuestoexpandinsize,leadingtoconcernsregardinglimited
resources,suchaswater.Becauseofthepressureofaccommodatingsuchalargeandstill
growingpopulation,Austinshouldlimitthenumberofpeoplewithinitscitylimits.

OneoftheissuesthatstemsfromoverpopulationinAustinisthedwindlingamountof
wateravailableforthoseinthecity.Recenthistoryhasshownrecorddryspellsleadingtolow
levelsinreservoirsliketheHighlandLakes,whichwereonlyatathirdoftheircapacityduring
2014,andothersourcesofwater(GoForWater).Wehavealsobeeninastateofstage2
waterrestrictionsforalmostfiveyearsnow(StickWithRestrictions).Althoughclimateisa
hugefactorthatplaysintowaterscarcity,poormanagementandoveruseagainduetosupply
anddemandhaveworsenedtheeffectsofdroughtandmadeimpactsindependentlyaswell
.
During2011,thedriestyearrecordedeverrecordedforCentralTexas,thereweremassive
releasesofwatertoricefarmersdownstream.Thisamountwasaboutthreeyearsworthof
Austinswateruseandcouldvebeenusedinotherwaysifproperlymanaged
(GoForWater).
Ifwehavebeenstrugglingwiththeseissuesonlynow,thereisnotellingwhatcouldhappen
nextintermsoflimitationsofwateruseasourpopulationcountinevitablymovesupwards.

Thereisalsoevidencethatlinksurbanizationtolowerwaterquality.Thereare
approximately828millionpeoplecurrentlylivinginurbanslumstoday,andeveryyearanother6
millionareexpectedtobeaddedtothiscount.Sanitationisbarelyimprovingforpeopleinthese
situations789millionpeopleinbigcitiesarewithoutaccesstocleanwater(UNDESA).Acity
cannotbefullysuccessfulifthebasicneedsofallofitscitizensarenotmet.Likeallrapidly
developingurbancenters,Austinharborsitsownpopulationofurbanpoorandthoselivingin
slums.Thesepeople,likeothersinthesetypesofconditionsindifferentplaces,lackproper
watersanitation.Ifwestillcannotfocuseffortstowardsimprovingthelivesofpeoplecurrently
withinthecity,thenwearenotpreparedforexpandingourpopulationand,asaresult,likely
raisingthenumberofpeopleatadisadvantageaswell.

Whiletherearemanyissuesthatstemfromtheissueofovercrowding,thenegative
effectsourwatersupplyfacesaresomeofthemostprominentandundeniableproblemswere
dealingwith.Althoughitseemslogisticallyimpossible,withsuchdrasticconsequencesweare
facingnowitisbeginningtoseemmoreandmorenecessarytofindsomewayto,atthevery
least,slowdownthetrafficofnewresidentsmovingin.Thatwaythecitycouldbetterfocuson
fortifyingitselfbyprioritizingwaterqualityandquantitybeforeopeningbackup.Makingsure
discussionoftheresultsofoverwhelmingpopulationgrowthstaysrelevantwillhopefully
influencemoreactiontoconserveanddistributewatermorepractically.Havingacleanwater
sourcethatisreadilyavailableforeverybodywillensureastable,strong,andcapableAustin
thatcouldpotentiallyhandleasurplusofpeoplebetterthanwecannow.
