    Austin has been in the midst of a giant population boom. Our population has been growing by over 30% every decade for the last five decades. With the Highland lakes, our main water reservoirs, being only one third full in 2014 it seems as if there is no solution to our water shortage. By limiting the amount of residents within city limits we are reducing the amount of people that rely on the Highland Lakes for the water that they use in their homes.

    Ourpopulationhas
    beengrowingbyover30%everydecadeforthelastfivedecades(qtd.InAustin
    PopulationGrowth).AstheFourthmostpopulatedcityinTexasAustinhasreacheda
    populationof843,000(WPRAustinPopulation2016)Takingintoaccountthe
    populationoftheAustinmetroarea,whichismadeupoftheTravis,Williamson,Hays,
    Bastrop,andCaldwellcountiesthatpopulationshootsuptoover2,000,000
    people(ArdenWard).WiththeHighlandLakes,ourmainwaterreservoirs,beingonly
    onethirdfullin2014andstatesenatorTroyFraseradmittingthereisnoPlanBforour
    watershortageitseemsasifthereisnosolutiontothewatershortage(TerrenceHenry).
    Whilethereisnotruesolutioninsighttothewatercrisis,wecanconserveourcacheof
    waterbylimitingtheamountofresidentswithincitylimits.Bydoingthiswearereducing
    theamountofpeoplethatrelyontheHighlandLakesforthewaterthattheyuseintheir
    homes.
    Indecemberof2015over100,000,000gallonsofwaterwerelostinawatermain
    break.Itwasestimatedthattheamountofwaterlostinthebreakcouldhavebeenused
    toprovidefor1,000Austinhomesforanentireyear(AsherPrice).Accordingtothe
    LCRAourwaterreservoirsareholdingapproximately2.01millionacrefeetofwater,
    whichtranslatestoabout655billiongallonsofwater.Furthermore,a2010censuscount
    showedthat,inthecityofAustin,therewere354,241housingunits.Thiswouldmean
    thatourcurrentsupplyofwaterwouldnotevenlastus20yearsbeforebeingdepleted.
    Ifourpopulationcontinuestoincreaseatthesamepace,ourreservoirswouldrundry
    farbeforethat.ThereareprojectionsthatstatethepopulationofthecityofAustincould
    reach1millionbytheyear2020(ArdenWard).Ifourwatersupplycanbarelywithstand
    beingcompletelydrainedfromsupportingthecurrentresidentshowcoulditpossibly
    supportapopulationanybiggerthanitalreadyis?
    Sofar,wehavesustainedourcurrentsupplyofwaterbyimplementingwater
    restrictions.Ifwecontinuetoenforcetheserestrictionswecanstillutilizeourwater
    repositorieswithoutsuckingthemdry.Therepercussionsoftherestrictionswouldalso
    notbegreatenoughtoaffectourdailylifenegatively.TheLCRAstatesthatstage2

    waterrestrictionsprohibitthewateringoflawns,thewashingofcars,orthecommercial
    useofwaterunlessitabidesbythespecifiedtimes(AustinWaterRestrictions).Justby
    limitingtheamountoftimeswecanwaterourlawnstoonedayaweekandbanningthe
    washingofcarsathomewewillelongateouruseofthewaterand,hopefully,useour
    boughttimetofindanothersolution.Usingtherestrictionstoconservewaterandbide
    ourtimewouldbethesafestsolutionthathasthesmallesteffectonoureverydaylives.
    Whilethissolutioncouldworkforawhile,thepopulationstillcontinuestoincreaseandit
    ispredictedtogrowfrom885,400to1millioninthenextfouryearsalone(ArdenWard).
    Beingconservativewiththewaterwillhelpwiththecrisis,butifwedontputlimitson
    howmanypeoplecanliveinwithinthecitywewillhavetoeitherhavestricter
    restrictionsorhaveapopulationcap.
    Withbothourwaterreservoirandourpopulationdepleteandriseatadistressing
    ratethereareverylittlethingswecandotofixbothproblems.Wecanbideourtimeby
    beingfrugalwithourcurrentsupplyofwaterbutthatisnotapermanentsolution.The
    timehascome,inthethickoftheincursionofourcity,toconsiderputtingalimittohow
    manypeoplethatcanbeallowedtolivehere.
