Your Own Government Activity

Setting: World War III has just swept the earth! Millions have died, America was decimated, and our
government and your way of life have ceased to exist. A small band of survivors (1,000 people) remain in
Turlock and it is your job to create a new form of government and economic system to support the
people. You will need to consider and answer the following criteria below to create your new
government. Failure to do so will result in the death of your town and a zero on the assignment!

Task #1: Answer the following questions:

What is the name of your country?

Political System:
What type of government do you have? (who are the leaders, how do they come to power)?

Describe the main components/aspects of your government. How does it operate? Is it a
democracy, dictatorship, communist, socialist, etc.

List 3 pros and 3 cons of your government

How are your citizens treated by the government?

Economic System:
What type of economic system do you have?

List pros and cons of this type of system.

Who controls the money? Or is there even money at all? How do people buy things?

Who Gets to Vote
What (if any) is your voting system (what is it like, how is it run)?

Who (if any) gets to vote? Why?

Law and Order

Who and how will you maintain order?

Who enforces the laws and rules?

Create your own 5 commandments/rules for your town

What happens if someone breaks the rules?

How will you defend your town from outside threats?

Daily Necessities
How will people get food and water?

Will there be schools? If so, what will they teach?

Will religions be allowed? If so, what?

Do different groups of people have different roles, or is everyone treated the same?

What other important aspects of your government should we know about?

Task #2: Create a flag for your new government on a standard size piece of blank paper. Then in 2-4
sentences describe the meaning and symbolism behind your flag. Why does it look the way it does? Do
the colors, images, etc. mean anything?

Task #3: Optional for Extra-Credit. On your own time, you and your partner need to design and draw out
the layout of your new town/government. Be sure to include how the city is set up, where the different
buildings (government, school, hospital, jail, armory, etc) are located. Show if there are roads, defensive
measures, where people live, meet, etc. (Think back to the start of the year when you designed your own
polis and use that as a guide). Your town must be on a poster board, be in color, and be neat and
presentable. Your poster must be completed on Monday when you present your government to the class.
