Dear Editor:
I appreciated and shared the concerns
raised in the letter from Dennis Lloyd. I
think its really sad that there are no restrooms in the Depot to be used by folks
waiting for trains or just arriving in Claremont. I also think its really sad that there is
no way to renew Senior TAP cards in that
vicinity.
Lets think again about how Claremont
can be more welcoming to visitors to our
wonderful city and more helpful to our own
residents.

Dear Editor:
During this week of Holocaust remembrance, it serves us well to remember that
the German exterminations of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah Witnesses, political prisoners, etc. began with untempered, hate-filled rhetoric.
It took only a few years before the vicious
stereotyping by the Nazi regime ended with
mass deportations and the gas chambers.
The recent hate crime in Claremont requires each of us to not only focus upon the
individual perpetrator of such crime, but to
also reflect upon the social climate which
contributed to it.
Throughout this election season, we have
witnessed the ratcheting up of tensions by
the purveyors of hateful stereotypes toward
specific minorities (Mexicans/Hispanics,
Muslims, LGBTQ individuals, etc.).
Through our educated lens, we now
know that the ultimate consequences of dehumanizing the other is violence. It now

Dear Editor:
In the June 7 Democratic primary for
state senate, we have several options, but the
strongest choice is Dr. Phlunte Riddle.
I have known Phlunte for 10 years as a
board member of the Pasadena United Nations Association, where we worked together, and she distinguished herself by significantly growing our financial ability to
better serve our mission.
Her 29-year history as a barrier-breaking
Pasadena police officer and lieutenant will
allow Dr. Riddle to bring her passion, advocacy experience and hard work to our
pressing issues such as jobs, schools and
safe communities when we elect her to the
California Senate.
Phlunte has served on numerous community boards in the city of Pasadena and
has always offered to help those in need.
Currently as a businesswoman and adjunct
professor, Dr. Riddle is a strong role model
for our youth and girls, and is an advocate
on womens issues.
Despite beginning her campaign recently,
after other established politicians were already being endorsed, Phlunte has still garnered more than 40 important endorsements, including those of our Democratic

CITY NEWS
The four-person ad hoc committee, comprised of councilmembers Joe Lyons and Larry Schroeder and planning commissioners K.M. Williamson and Leigh Anne
Jones, failed to make a recommendation to the city council after discussion that at times became contentious.
The committee was formed at the April 12 city council meeting when the council couldnt reach a supermajority vote on the zone change, which would amend
a 2007 zoning map to change the properties located at
211 and 239 North College Avenue from medium-density residential to institutional/educational to fit with the
2006 general plan.
While the meeting was originally called to focus specifically on the zone change, the implications of the
change hung over the council chamber. The zone
change is a vital part of the Pomona College Master Plan,
which would allow Pomona College to build its proposed
art museum on the lot.
It would also lead to the moving of the historic Renwick House across the street to the southeast corner of

rambling paths and picturesque settings.
It would be nice to visit these parks. Thats what I
thought when I watched the PBS documentary, 10 Parks
That Changed America. They were among those listed
in the hour-long program hosted by Geoffrey Baer and
produced with consultation from Thaisa Way, professor
of landscape architecture at the University of Washington; Walter Hood, professor of landscape architecture at
UC Berkeley and Peter Harnik, director of park excellence at the Trust for Public Land and author of Urban
Green: Innovative Parks for Resurgent Cities. It was
emphasized that these parks arent the best or the top 10
in the nation but are parks that influenced the design of
other parks (for example, it was noted that Golden Gate
Park in San Francisco and Griffith Park in Los Angeles
are similar in design as well as purpose to Central Park).
Yes, it would be nice to go to these parks and enjoy
them. It would be nice if Fairmount Park or Mt. Auburn
Cemetery or the High Line werent far, more than a short
drive or walk away. It would be nice to have these parks
accessible whenever we wanted to take a short stroll or
get a hour or two break on a busy day.
Wouldnt it be nice? Wouldnt it be nice to have these
lovely, rejuvenating parks nearby, where we could enjoy
them anytime we want?
Also when Im traveling, I think the same thing. It
would be so nice to be able to go over to the path along
the cliffs north of the pier in Santa Cruz for an brief afternoon stroll or jog or to spend a hour or two at the redwoods park down the road.
Indeed, it is easy to have park envy. Almost as easy as
it is to take the parks we have here, the parks we have
right down our street, in Claremont, for granted. But, in
fact, people have park envy when they visit Claremont.
Claremont is known as the City of Trees. It could also
be known as the city of parks, with about a dozen parks
in this relatively small community.
We dont have a Central Park, but we do have Memorial Park, a large green space near the center of town
Dear Editor:
We are writing in support of a new
Pomona College Museum of Art on the
west side of College Avenue near the public library, post office and city hall.
As two students who have grown up in
Claremont, and now attend Scripps College, we can see this divisive issue through
the lens of both town and gown. We
do not see any real downside to locating an
expanded facility to house all museum
collections and programs just steps away
from the heart of downtown Claremont.
Those opposed seem most concerned
with keeping a dividing line between the
Village and the Colleges have overlooked
the changes that have already occurred in
and around Claremont since we were in elementary school.
More than ever before, todays students
from the 5Cs patronize local businesses
and consistently leave campus to visit the
Village. All of our friends walk to into
town to see movies, shop, go out to eat,
take exercise classes and make use of
other amenities downtown.
Just like many of you, the Village is also
a destination for us. Likewise, weve seen
more attempts to connect the Colleges to
the local community, through student-led
activities that include nonprofit consulting
work (SOURCE at CMC), volunteering
(through JumpStart and Uncommon
Good) and mentoring local teens.
When we were Claremont High School
students, we were both members of the
READERS COMMENTS
led to conversations about a new sort of institution that serves both a campus and a
community audience.
To those who would ask, Why not
leave things as they are? we would reply,
Theres no room to grow! Programs and
collections, concerts, classes and tours are
becoming more challenging in the old
space. We even have a class in a basement
where some of the collection has to be
stored. Others say, Dont move a historic
house! To us, it appears that much of the
concern about moving the old Renwick
House arises from the simple fact that
some do not like change. While we appreciate Claremonts historic beauty, we
see change as a healthy thing, allowing our
community to evolve and grow.
For those of us who walk west across
College Avenue to the town, a new building on the west side of College will allow
for further blurring of the town and gown
relationship, and promote engagement and
access to collections and exhibitions for
visitors, students from the local school
district and our Colleges community.
Those opposed to the project have recently made suggestions to just move another college-owned Victorian house,
Kenyon House, onto the property where
the museum would go, presumably because it helps draw a separation line between the Colleges and the community,
and force a new museum back into the interior of the college grounds. If moving
one historic house is fine, why not move
Renwick from the museums proposed
location to the east side of the road?
Now that the Claremont Museum of
Arts Project ARTstART has found a
homea re-imagined space within our
town historic landmark the Claremont
Depot, it is our hope that voices that look
to the future, not the past, will prevail,
and enable both students and community
members access to two collaborative cultural institutions in downtown Claremont.
We encourage the city council and its
special ad hoc committee to champion a
synergy that can take place between the
Colleges, community and cultural institutions adjacent to the civic center, and the
inevitable walking traffic that will continue to grow as more 5Cs students continue the trend and come to museum programs, visit local shops and take part in the
full life of our community.
Those who wish to create dividing lines
or build walls (both in regard to this issue
and nationally) have been heard from too
much as it is. The future is with those who
work to break down barriers. The majority of usstudents and community memberswant a new museum. Our community should not be stuck in the past but be
willing to embrace the future and manage
the changes that will come in a smart,
sensible and open-hearted way.

This Place Matters. Everyone
has places that are important to them.
Places they care about. Places that matter to
them. Places they have lived. Places where
memories were made. The theme this year
encourages people to celebrate the places
that are meaningful to them and to their
communities.
The connection to place begins at a very early age.
When the grandchildren visit us here in Claremont, they
usually arrive with a list of places that matter to them
they want to visit. It typically starts with a request to go
play in their room at the house or, if the weather permits, to stay outside and enjoy their playhouse. They always want to go to lunch at The Village Grille. Then it
is on to Bert & Rockys Cream Company, followed by
a visit to the Choo Choo Park, otherwise known as
Rosa Torrez Park, or to another of Claremonts wonderful parks, known to the grandchildren not by its name,
but by the major playground apparatus.
It is a commonality to nearly everyone that places do
matter and it is common ground on which we can stand
together. Lets take a short tour of some places that matter, all within a short walking distance of the Village. We
begin at the Depot on First Street.
THE CLAREMONT DEPOT, 1927
110 West First Street
This stunning example of Spanish Colonial Revival
style, with its thick stucco walls, wood grille windows,
red tile roof, frescoed ceiling and Moorish arches, is on
the National Register of Historic Places. It stands along
the train tracks where Claremont began in 1887, as a
town site on the Santa Fe Railroad route. This 1927
structure replaced the original 1887 wooden Victorian
station. In 1967, the Santa Fe Railroad closed the Depot
and it remained vacant until 1990, when the City of
Claremont purchased the building and restored it to its
1920s splendor, to serve as a transit center for Metrolink
commuter trains and a regional bus system. It is now
home to the Claremont Museum of Art.

Music softens the heart, said musician and composer Yuval Ron. It connects people with emotions
The song ended up being an Armenian tune, Mr. Ron said. Their history
and culture is so intertwined, they learn
that they cant just hate the whole other
culture or other nation, because their
own culture is enriched by that neighboring culture.
Mr. Ron was born in Israel, where he
played guitar in jazz, rock and blues
combos and learned the oud from nomadic bedouin masters. He longed to
study in America, and emigrated to the
US in 1985 to attend Bostons Berklee
College of Music, where he graduated
Cum-Laude in 1989. He moved to Los
Angeles in 1994 to make his mark as a
film composer. His career advanced,
with steady work in TV and film, but
he found himself itching to play again.
He began slowly, performing with likeminded musicians at friends parties.
But soon the garage band found its calling.
In 2000, there was a lot of violence
in the Middle East, Mr. Ron recalled.
It really bothered me, and I really
wanted to do something.
A friend suggested a concert for
peace and, since his band was comprised of Syrians, Iranians, Palestinians
and Israelis, it was a natural. He put together a show at the Church in Ocean
Park in Santa Monica, billing the band
as Yuval Ron and Friends.
We did this show, and it was
packed, and people danced, Mr. Ron
17
the band and his work teaching, producing sacred and secular music, both
for the ensemble and for solo projects.
He is also writing and recording scores
for television and film, including his
work on the 2007 Oscar winning short
film West Bank Story.
His work under the stage lights is
balanced by his quieter pursuits in the
recording studio. Im really happy, he
said. One is magical in one way, and
one is magical in another way. I really
like oscillating: going on a movie for
three months, a tour for three weeks,
then going and recording an album for
a few weeks. Every day I feel gratitude
to be living the life that Im living.
The Yuval Ron Ensemble plays the
Claremont Folk Festival on May 22, at
the Sontag Greek Theater, Pomona College. More information is available at

CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN
THIS STATE:
All right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held
by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as:
More fully described in said Deed of Trust.
Street Address or other common designation of real
property: 1781 N San Dimas Canyon Road, San Dimas, CA 91773

The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any

If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidders sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are
considering bidding on this property lien, you should
understand that there are risks involved in bidding at
a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on
the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee
auction does not automatically entitle you to free and
clear ownership of the property. You should also be
aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you
are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to
investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding
liens that may exist on this property by contacting the
county recorders office or a title insurance company,
either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you
should be aware that the same lender may hold more
than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid
less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the
time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the
total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale
date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one
or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee,
or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California
Civil Code. The law requires that information about
trustee sale postponements be made available to you and
to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the
sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been
postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and
date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2015-03656-CA. Information about
postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on
the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

CASH, CASHIERS CHECK DRAWN ON A STATE OR NATIONAL
BANK, A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL CREDIT
UNION, OR A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, A SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OR
SAVINGS BANK SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102 OF THE FINANCIAL CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE:
All right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by the trustee in the
hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as:
More fully described in said Deed of Trust.
Street Address or other common designation of real property: 1069 EAST
COVINA HILLS ROAD, COVINA, CA 91724
A.P.N.: 8447-014-025
The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of
the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above.
The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining
principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount
of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold
and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the
initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $ 310,101.31.
If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful
bidders sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid
to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse.
The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned
caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located.
NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not
on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not
automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You
should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien.
If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before
you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on
this property by contacting the county recorders office or a title insurance
company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you
consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender
may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may
be less than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements
be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this
property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site
http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeS
ervices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2015-03748-CA.
Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that
occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected
in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to
verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE
OF:
GWENDOLYN BROWN
CASE NO. BP173366
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and
persons who may otherwise be interested in the WILL or estate, or both of GWENDOLYN BROWN.
A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by MICHELLE
MCKINNEY in the Superior Court of California, County of
LOS ANGELES.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that MICHELLE
MCKINNEY be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.
THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act . (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many ac-
legalads@claremont-courier.com 909.621.4761
tions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain
very important actions, however, the personal representative
will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they
have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The
independent administration authority will be granted unless
an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows
good cause why the court should not grant the authority.
A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: 05/25/16 at 8:30AM in Dept. 29 located at 111 N. HILL
ST., LOS ANGELES, CA 90012
IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should
appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written
objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance
may be in person or by your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the
decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a
copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2)
60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you
of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code.
Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your
rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney
knowledgeable in California law.
YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are
a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court
a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of
an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition
or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.
