Black is beautiful, and being an Unapologetic Black is more than a trendy pop culture statement.
It is more than just raising your Black fist and sharing a hashtag for a Black victim. It is defined
from the underground historic roots in slavery, to the march for civil rights, to the current day
spotlight. It is from the wisdom of the leaders, to bring pride and community to all Black people
as strength. So why do many associate that Black Pride is violent and anti-White? So in this
project I will like to make a video mashup about how Black Panthers and Black Pride is a
beautiful, and not harmful to the society. I believe ignorance leads to stereotypes and racism
towards a culture. During this projects, I would like to uncover many positive things about Black
Pride and the Black Panther Party.
The biggest issue with this project that I will be covering is racial tension. The systematic
discrimination and racist images that perceives Black Pride to be problematic and negative in
media coverage. I would also discuss the current and relative events of the Black Lives Matter
Movement and performances from artists such as Beyonc and Kendrick Lamar. I would like to
address these problems of an audience of all different races. In return, to have them open their
minds and hearts to accept other races historic culture and values. The problem is the
miseducation of race and culture in America. One should be able to accept their culture and
freedom to embrace it.
For my project I have a large volume of proud historic Black moments to drive from. I
have narrowed in down two main quotes, the description of a black panther from a zoologist and
a poem about black beauty. I will also be using video clips from performance and music videos
from Kendrick Lamar, Beyonc, and Michael Jackson, speeches from Malcolm X, Martin Luther
King, and Black Panthers interviewees. I would also be using clips of the Civil Rights Movement,
Black Panther Party in action, and clips of The Black Lives Matter Movement. I feel like I would
like to indicate the positive media coverage that is never shown about Black pride and power. I
feel these images and audio would best describe the effort of change for racial equality and not
hate against other race groups and police enforcement.
Although I know that I would like spread positivity, but there are several huge risks about
my topic. I do understand that my project deals with a huge social issue that is still current
today. I know that certain issues, images, and the message itself might be discomforting to
some audience members. For example, many might emotional response to the clips of the
Black Lives Matter material or the Black Panther Party. I am also aware of the censorship of rap
lyrics, images, music videos, and art performances regarding police brutality. I also aware of the
risk of presenting factual historical information. I want to be careful of not presenting the Black
Panther Party as a social services act. I am also aware of not confusing this projects message
to a presentation to a political message about social injustices. I have thought about the risks,
but I am willing to take it because of the powerful message I have intended.
I want the message clear, that you can be proud to be Black and it doesnt mean youre
anti-white. You can be against police brutality, and it doesnt make you anti-police. In result, I
hope this project is able to answer question about how does the social image portray other
cultures. My questions for my research would be the following:
1. Why do many assume negative views about Black Pride?
2. Why does history seemed to be one sided?

3.
4.

How can Black Pride be celebrated without being problematic?

Can project really change how others feel about Black Pride?
Overall, I think this project really hits home. This is something I express daily about
social and racial equality for America. I am very passionate about raising awareness towards
Black Culture. Black empowerment is just Black education to help others. I think it will help
others to encourage other racial differences about themselves and embrace it.
