    NGSSCORRELATION

    Thefieldtripisstructuredaround3rd5thgradeNGSS.Weprimarilyarefocusingon4th
    gradestudentsbyexpandingonwhattheylearnedin3rdgrade,aswellaswhattheyare
    learningcurrently.ThestudentswilltourPanAmericanSeedResearchFacilityandlearn
    aboutafacilityintheirveryownbackyard.Studentswillparticipateinhandson
    activities,observations,anddemonstrations.Theywillexperiencethisbyrotating
    throughvariousareasofthefacility.Ateachrotationthestudentswillhaveakeytake
    awaythatcorrelatestoNGSS.
    DisciplinaryCoreIdeas:
    LS1.AStructureandFunction
    Organismshavebothinternalandexternalmacroscopicstructuresthatallowforgrowth,
    survival,behavior,andreproduction.
    ThroughtheHandPollinationDemonstrationandFlowerDissectionstudentswill
    observethereproductivestructuresofaflower.
    LS1.BGrowthandDevelopmentofOrganisms
    Reproductionisessentialtoeverykindoforganism.Organismshaveuniqueanddiverse
    lifecycles.
    Onethemeofthefieldtripistheoveralllifecycleofaplantandhowplantsgo
    fromseedtoflower.Studentswillunderstandthatseedscomefromthefruitsof
    flowers.Studentswillunderstandthatpollenfromonefloweristransferredto
    anotherflower,thentheflowerthatispollinatedfruitsandseedsareinsidethat
    fruit.Thelifecyclerepeats.
    LS1.COrganizationformatterandenergyflowinorganisms
    Plantsacquirematerialforgrowthchieflyfromair,water,andprocessmatterand
    obtainenergyfromsunlight,whichisusedtomaintainconditionsnecessaryfor
    survival.
    Onethemeofthefieldtripisthefacilitycreatesaperfectenvironmentforflower
    production.
    IntheTractorBuildingthroughtheSoilFillingDemonstrationstudentswill
    understandthatsoilcontainsnutrientsforplants.Themoistureandnutrientlevel
    havetobejustrightforgerminationandgrowth.
    IntheSeedSowingAreathroughtheSeedSowingActivitystudentswill
    understandthatseedsneeddifferentenvironments(amountoflight,water,
    temperature)togerminate.
    LS3.AInheritanceoftraitsandLS3.BVariationofTraits
    Differentorganismsvaryinhowtheylookandfunctionbecausetheyhavedifferent
    inheritedinformation;theenvironmentalsoaffectsthetraitsthatanorganismdevelops.
    IntheGreenhouseareastudentswillobservetheprocessofhandpollination.
    Plantswithdesirabletraitsarechosenbyplantbreedersandcrossedthroughhand
    pollination.Theresultisanewgenerationwithavarietyoftraitsthatcanbe
    observedvisually.
