Students should know:
1. What are the functions of a family?
2. They are aware that they live in a family (in a Caribbean region) and how they interact
with each member of their family.
3. They are aware of the members belonging to their family.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE:
Students should know at the end of the lesson:
1. The different types of families in the Caribbean.
2. Each type of family consists of different groups of members.
3. The different factors which contribute to the development of different family types.

Know the international symbol for a family.


Define what a family is.
Differentiate between nuclear and extended families, joint and reconstituted families.
Understand how families are formed, that is, the factors which contribute to form a
sibling and single parent family.
5. State the members which contribute to different family types.
SET INDUCTION: A short cartoon song of a family will be played and students asked to state
what the song is about.

TRANSITION STATEMENT: We are now going to look at what is a family and the types
or structures of families and how they are formed.
CONTENT:
What is a family?
What are the types of families?
How are single parent and sibling families in particular formed?

topic of what is a family,
the stages of it and how it
is formed using a power

CONSOLIDATION: I will now show a series of family photos for you to recap what we
learnt today by brainstorming and trying to figure which family type each picture
represents. Afterwards you will be required to complete a little test to see how much you
have recalled from this lesson by using these photos.

EVALUATION: Still shot images of families will be projected for students evaluate which type
of family the shot portrays. Students will be required to give evidence and justifications for the
answer they give. They will also be required to give their opinions on what factors may have
contributed to single and sibling family types if they choose these answers for any of the still
shots shown. This will be corrected in class.

ADDITIONAL READING: A hand out summarizing all that is covered in the lesson will be
given to the students.
