You need to pass:


Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test

You need to have:


Minimum of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university
Three semester hours of credit in course regarding parental involvement
A license to teach such pupils
Eight semester hours teaching two different age groups
An Elementary, secondary license endorsed with a major in child care

ELEMENTARY SUBJECTS

K-8 TEACHER
You need to pass:
Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test

What you need:


Minimum of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university
Completed a program of preparation for teaching in the elementary grades
(must be approved by the board)
Three semester hours of credit in education for pupils with disabilities, parental
involvement and family engagement

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER
You must:
Be a citizen of the United States or be a lawful
permanent resident with a valid Permanent
Resident Card
Have sixty semester credits or an Associates
degree or higher from an accredited college/
university

SPECIAL EDUCATION
EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS
(GATE)
You need:
A license for the level of education for whom the program is
offered
Two years of verified experience as a teacher in an approved
school
To complete twelve semester hours of credit from an accredited
college/university in
Characteristics and needs of gifted and talented pupils
Assessment of gifted and talented pupils and programs for such pupils
Curriculum in content areas for gifted and talented pupils
Methodology and strategies for teaching gifted and talented pupils

READING SPECIALIST
You need:
Bachelors degree
Valid elementary, middle or junior high, secondary or special teaching license
(excludes Business and Industry)

At least sixteen credits in reading to include one of these areas:


Foundations of Reading
Elementary Methods and Materials
Secondary Methods and Materials
Diagnosis of reading disabilities
A practicum in reading remediation.

ART SPECIALIST
You need:
Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
Principles of learning and Teaching K-6 or 7-12
Praxis Content Area Test
Bachelors degree
Three semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family
engagement
Twenty two semester credits of professional education to include Foundations of
education, Methods of teaching art in elementary or secondary schools, and eight
semester credits of student teaching
Thirty six semester credits in fine and applied arts which are
History of art Painting
Design
Digital or graphic arts
Drawing Ceramics

Photography

LIBRARY/MEDIA SPECIALIST
You need:
Valid elementary, middle or junior high.secondary or special teaching license
Complete a program specific to school library media specialist
Masters or more advanced degree in library science
Twenty one semester credits in:
Organization and administration of a school library
The cataloging and classification of materials for a library
Reference, bibliography and information skills
The use and selection of educational media for a library
Childrens and young adults literature
Computers in the library
A supervised practicum in an elementary, middle or junior high school, or a secondary school
library.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
SPECIALIST
You must:
Complete Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test
Have a Bachelors degree
Complete three semester credits in parental involvement and family engagement
Complete and approved program of preparation for teaching physical education from
kindergarten to 12th grade
Complete forty two credits in
Anatomical Kinesiology or Mechanical Kinesiology
The Physiology of Exercise
Testing and measuring the skill and ability of a pupil in physical education
The psychological or social aspects of physical education, or both
Motor learning or motor development vi. Adapted physical education
Movement activities for pupils in preschool and primary grades
Movement activities for pupils in intermediate grades
Advanced first aid or an equivalent course of study

MUSIC SPECIALIST
You must complete:
Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test
Principles of Learning and Teaching K-6 or 7-12
Bachelors degree
Three semester credits in parental involvement and family engagement
A program for teaching music
Twenty two credits
. Foundations of Education Methods of Teaching Music in elementary or secondary
grades; and eight credits in student teaching
Thirty six credits in the foundations of music which include:
Music Theory The History or Literature of Music Applied Music, including an area of specialization in Vocal
or Instrumental Music
Conducting
Techniques for Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, Piano and String
Instruments
Diction or Vocal Techniques and Pedagogy and Music Ensemble.

EDUCATIONAL COMPUTER STRATEGIST


You must have:
An elementary, middle or secondary/special license
An approved program
Twelve credits in:
Educational issues relating to computers
Methods for teaching the integration of technology with curriculum

Methods for teaching computer applications or instruction in at least three of


the following
Productivity tools such as word processing, databases and spreadsheets
Communication tools
Research tools
Multimedia tools
Other applications approved by the Board

SCHOOL COUNSELOR
Must:
Complete Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test
Complete three credits regarding parental involvement and family
engagement
Have a Masters degree OR Must hold a specialty credential as a
National Certified School Counselor issued by the National Board for
Certified Counselors OR Must hold a masters or more advanced by
an accredited college or university and have at least two years of
teaching experience or at least two years of school counseling
experience

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST
Complete three credits regarding parental involvement and family
engagement
Hold a certificate as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist
issued by the National School Psychology Certification System of
the National Association of School Psychologists
OR Hold a graduate degree with preparation in school psychology
and have earned sixty semester graduate credits from the required
areas
Have completed practicum and a minimum of a one-thousand
hour internship in school psychology

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR
You must have:
A valid elementary, middle, junior high, secondary or special teaching
license
A masters degree
Complete three years of teaching experience in an accredited K-12 school
At least twenty four semester hours of graduate courses in the
administration of a school
Have completed an additional twelve semester hours of graduate courses
which may include other courses considered to be part of an administrative
program for educators, OR hold a masters degree or higher in educational
administration from a regionally accredited college or university
