What is Kidney Cancer (Renal Cell)?

Its a cancer that originates in


the kidneys.

Kidney cancer affects the


kidney mainly.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC)


occurs the most often.

Out of control growth of


abnormal cells leads to the
cancer.

Symptoms of the cancer.

Blood in the urine (hematuria)

Low back pain on one side (not caused by injury)

A mass (lump) on the side or lower back

Fatigue (tiredness)

Loss of appetite

Weight loss not caused by dieting

Fever that is not caused by an infection and that doesnt go away

Anemia (low red blood cell counts)

Possible causes of Kidney cancer.

A way of inheriting the cancer from your


parents is if they have something called
Hereditary Papillary RCC. This disorder
is linked to changes in certain genes.

The exact cause of getting the cancer is


unknown.

As you get older youll have a greater


chance of getting the cancer.

Males have double the chance of getting


the cancer over females.

Ways to prevent the cancer.

Life habits have a huge effect on the cancer.

Smoker have the greatest chance of getting it.

Extremely overweight people count for 20% of


Renal cancer cases.

Having high blood pressure gives you a good


chance of having it.

The best way of protecting your body from


Renal cancer is to not smoke, watch your
weight, and manage your high blood pressure.

How the cancer is treated.

Active surveillance - Monitoring the tumor closely till there is evidence that the
disease is getting worse

Surgery

Radical Nephrectomy Remove tumor, he entire kidney, and surrounding tissue

Partial nephrectomy Removal of the tumor without removing kidney

Laparoscopic and robotic surgery- Inserts telescopic equipment to remove tumor


or the entire kidney. ( faster recovery)

Radiation Therapy- Use of high-energy x-rays or other particles to destroy cancer


cell.

Chemotherapy - Use of chemicals or drugs to destroy cancer cells (can kill


healthy cells as well)

Blood and urine tests

Biopsy

X-ray test

Intravenous pyelogram (IVP)

are likely to have the disorder.

Average age of people when they are diagnosed


is 64

Very uncommon in people younger than age 45

The lifetime risk for developing kidney cancer


is about 1 in 63 (1.6%) Higher in men than in
women

The estimate is about 19% for the UK, 13% for


Brazil and 8% for China

Czech Republic had the highest rate of kidney


cancer, followed by Lithuania and Slovakia.
