Art Education

I. Lesson Number, Grade Levels, Title, and Duration:

Lesson: Healthy Habit Cube Collage
Lesson number:
Grade: 4-5
Duration: 165 minutes (three 55 minute classes)
II. Lesson Rationale:
Having a healthy lifestyle is important for all children, especially in the educational setting where
healthy habits are essential to performing well at school. Teachers should introduce students and
remind them of how to keep good physical health. Eating healthy and staying fit are crucial to building
up energy and staying focused and curious in school. With this lesson, students should revisit exercises
and nutritional foods to encourage them to build a healthier lifestyle.
III. Key Concepts:
Healthy lifestyle
Healthy foods
Exercising to stay healthy
Effect of healthy habits on children
Effects of unhealthy choices
IV. Essential Question:
What are some good habits to keep/pick up that can promote physical health?
Why is maintaining a good health important?
How can a healthy physical health improve the school environment?
How can art help promote eating healthy and staying fit?
V. Lesson Objectives:
Through gathering images for the collage, students will explore different ways to exercise and
discover different foods that provide nutritional value.
As students work on their cube collage, they will identify possible changes they can make in
their habits to improve their own health.
Upon completion of the project, students will compare the impact of good health vs bad health
on students in an educational setting.
By the end of the lesson, students should explain how they can use art to promote good
physical health in their community.
VI. Specific Art Content:

IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:
Day 1 of the Lesson
1. Introduction/Motivation:
I will provide students with a short PowerPoint presentation on health, then I will ask them to
identify different ways to be healthy and the different areas in which one can be healthy. I will
then focus attention to Physical health by having the kids to a stand-up activity.
2. Guided Practice
I will tape a line midway across the classroom, then I will ask students to stand up and ask
questions where they have to choose the side of the classroom with which they identify (i.e.
Who exercises at least three times a day? If you do, go to the right side of the class, if you do
not, go to the left side of the class). I will then give students some magazines and ask
reflective questions that will start preparing them for their project.

3.

4.

5.

6.

Questions to get them thinking about physical health:

What are some ways in which we can improve or maintain a good health?
Why is it important to be physically healthy?
How does physical health impact your performance in school?
What happens to your health if you do not eat healthy or exercise?
How can we use art to encourage other and/or promote good physical health?
Independent Practice
Students will be broken into small groups to discuss about the topic. I will provide students
with questions that they should think about in their group (questions listed above), and I will
ask them to identify ways in which physical health (whether good or bad) is portrayed through
the magazines and ads. Students should explore the questions and lead a discussion among
themselves.
Closure
To end the class, I will introduce the project to the students and ask that for homework they cut
out magazine images that represent or encourage healthy habits, including but not limited to,
exercises, fruits, vegetables, and activities. If students have a printer at home and access to
internet, they may also print images that they find on the web.
Formative Evaluation
Students will be evaluated this day on participation: Were students following directions? Were
students engaging in the conversation? Did students participate in the class activity? How well
did students collaborate during team session?
Classroom Management Procedures
I will keep each activity short so that students do not loose attention or get bored. I will also
walk around the classroom to make sure students are on task and discussing the topic.

Day 2 of the Lesson

1. Introduction/Motivation:
I will recap to the class our discussion from the previous class and allow students to voice out
any concerns or ask any questions that they have about the topic. I will then ask that students
take out the materials they collected for homework, as well as pass out some more magazines
that the students might need as they work on the project.
2. Guided Practice
I will give the class a step by step demonstration on how to construct the Healthy Cube. I will
also discuss the cube requirements in regards to incorporating elements and principles of design
(variety, pattern, color, and representational art) that they should use in the composition of their
cube. I will ask students that they use the questions from the previous class (refer to day one for
the list of questions) to help them chose what images to include on their project.
3. Independent Practice
Students will be given individual work time to begin working on their cube.
4. Closure
There will be no closure today other than clean-up and reminding students that they will only
have one more class to finish their project.
5. Formative Evaluation
I will evaluate students again on participation: Did students pay attention during the demo? Did
students use class time effectively? Were students on task?
6. Classroom Management Procedures

I will walk around the classroom to make sure students are on task. As I walk around, I will
provide students with feedback on their progress so far and allow them to ask me any question
they may have about the project process.
Day 3 of the Lesson
Students will have no guided practice today as it is a work day, but if they need help completing
their project, I will provide them with that help.
3. Independent Practice
Students will have individual work time to complete their project.
4. Closure
Students will be stopped fifteen minutes before class time to do a class check in and see how
the students are completing their projects. Students should be almost done, so I will ask that a
couple of students volunteer to share their project and explain their idea behind their images.
Students must then clean up and submit their projects.
5. Formative Evaluation
I will again evaluate students on class participation and efficient use of class time. In addition, I
will use a rubric (see X below) to evaluate their completed project and overall effort in creating
their Healthy Habit Cube
6. Classroom Management Procedures
I will walk around the classroom to make sure students are on task and I will provide students
with feedback on their progress so far and allow them to ask me any question they may have
about the project process. I will give students warning on time they have left to complete their
project so that they can work efficiently to finish their cubes.

Repeat 1-6, as needed, for each class session needed for this one lesson.
X. Summative Assessment and Evaluation:
Teacher Assessment: I will use the rubric below to evaluate each individual student at the end of the
project/lesson. In addition, students will receive a daily participation grade (based on their attention
during the presentation/demonstration) both days of the lesson.
Student Self-Evaluation: I will give students the opportunity to evaluate themselves by providing them
with the same rubric below, however instead of teacher comments, it will say student
comments/questions, and the project goals will be written in personal pronoun, i.e. I used class time
appropriately.

XI. Interdisciplinary Connections:

Briefly list and describe any meaningful connections or extensions of the lesson into other subject
areas. It is beneficial to be able to include any TEKS in the non-art subject area pertinent to the
interdisciplinary connection. Not all art lessons have legitimate connections across the curriculum.
This project has ties to science and human health. Students not only learn to construct cubes and utilize
art to promote an idea, but they also explore different ways in which a lack of exercise and unhealthy
eating can harm their health, as well as how they can practice a healthy lifestyle and encourage others
to do so.
