Meeting National Standards through Movement
This conference was about how to integrate Mathematics into P.E. We went into this
one with an open and excited mind about the topic. It was hard to be motivated to
listen when all they are talking about is how you should get the kids up and moving
when it comes to math, and we only got up once. I felt like this session was
repetitive on tips and tricks we already knew. The idea of it was great, and there
were a couple things I found very helpful. Example: you should teach students
about multiplication arrays by getting them up and moving and putting them into
an array and getting that kinesthetic and visual aid. Also you could give the student
10 block manipulatives and get them to make even numbers, odd numbers, and
equations with their numbers in groups. Other than that, the content was repetitive
to what we learn at school.

Minds in Motion: A Literacy Approach to Physical Education
This conference was about how to integrate literacy skills into P.E. This one was
much more inclusive to participate in. It was very engaging, and I learned a lot of
great P.E filler games and other games. Some activities included:
-Ago/Amay (data processing, classroom management)
Teacher calls out AGO to get attention, students reply with AMAY in the same
cadence and volume and the attention is on the teacher.
-Flying Frogs (listening, observing, teamwork, numeracy)
Rubber frogs/bean bags. Students are in relay teams, one at a time, they run
out to a number spot on the floor, place one foot on the number and throw their
frog into the bucket. If they get it in, they bring their number spots back to their
team. IF they miss, team gets bonus points for cheering anyways.
-Jump rope rhymes (Speaking, reading, art)
Get the kids to make up a 4 line rhyme and practice it lots (could be done in
class on paper first) then use that rhyme to skip rope to as a team.
-Giant cards (observing, memorization) www.teacher.com printable
Students are set up in relay team formation; there are lines across the gym
set up. Students run one at a time to flip over a card (try and do it in order of
Ace-King) if they run and flip over a number out of order, they tell the team what it
was and put it face down again. If they got the card in order, they leave it face up
and try to get all the cards flipped over.
-Artist and Canvas (Writing, tactile)
Students pair up and each pick a card with a letter or number on it. One
student sits down and closes their eyes, the other partner stands behind and draws
their card number/letter on their back. The student has to guess the number and
then they switch.
-Ribbon Coordinates (Math, geometry, teamwork)
Teams are in relay formation again, each team gets a streamer roll. Code
master leads teammates around the gym to their coordinates that are on the wall,
coordinates could make a shape or a word when completed. All teams are working
at once.

4-H Yoga for Kids: A Healthy Living Program
Opening ice breaker activity was to go around the circle and say our name, where
were from and invent a yoga pose of an animal that starts with our first letter of our
name. This conference was slow starting, but once we got to do a full hour of yoga,
it was really fun. The key to yoga for kids is to simplify the yoga poses to childish
names for them ex: shavasna=guided relaxation. Remember to balance poses, if
you use the right foot, make sure the students do both sides. This workshop was
one of the most rewarding ones today. It was very fun and engaging. All the
resources for poses are on their page in the app.

Rope Jumping for Fun and Fitness
This conference was a lot of fun. It was a surprisingly hard workout, we jumped rope
for the whole time. She taught us some great tricks and modifications to teach
students the basics and complexities on jump rope. When I was in elementary
school, some of my favourite gym classes and clubs included jump rope. I will for
sure use these cues from this conference to teach my students how to jump rope.
The helpful cues she gave us were the eagle and the ready position. The eagle is a
position to get ready for any trick. The rope is behind them, and their arms are out
to the side in an A frame holding the rope ends. The ready position brings your
arms forward with the hands together untangling the rope in the process. I found
this more challenging than I expected, but it wouldnt stop me from teaching it in
P.E. I think a lot of the tricks I couldnt do, the kids could. Tricks included: The
pretzel, flamingo, helicopter, blender, switching, turning, side-to-side rope swinging,
double spin, etc.

PLAYON: Promoting Lifelong Healthy Lifestyles Through Active Play
This conference was about the importance of involving play and the playground to
keep them active. A lot of the time, students just hang around the playground, but
arent actually physically active out on the playground. Their program is called Play
on or Play core that teaches children to use the playground as an obstacle course
during P.E. class. This conference emphasises the fact that teachers should push for
new playgrounds for great equipment to use for physical activity for the kids. Who
should you go after for funding? Parents, teachers, doctors, big companies that are
unhealthy, because they want a good face for the public. We left this workshop
early because the topic of the conference moved to the topic of the ladies book
more than the activities you could do on the playground equipment. I will look it up
online for possible activities to use for P.E outdoors on the playground.

Healthy Moves: Meaningful Opportunities for vigorous exercise success
This one is about the technologies used in Stillwater, Minnesota to encourage
students to be motivated in gym class. There is a Smart Heart Program that uses
technology to count their points to engage them in their physical activity. Students
stand on tiles and jump on the tiles or jump from tile to tile to get points.
www.Heartzones.com is where you can find all the info about the Smart Heart
system. Get the students active as soon as they get to the gym. Do not sit them
down for attendance or instruction. Use the smartheart heart rate monitor to see
how much physical activity they are really doing in the gym class. Even the best
teachers are surprised how non-active they are in P.E. The Smart Heart Monitors, all
you need is a class set of foot pods and heart rate monitors. The school shares the
class set. I will definitely be looking into this technologically advanced system to be
implemented in my future school and classroom.

The Kinesthetic Classroom: Teaching and Learning through Movement
He had us do an exercise involving the power of the brain connecting to the body.
We stood up and found a place in the room; we put our arms up beside us like a T.
We twisted our upper body and marked the spot on the wall that was the farthest
we could go. He then told us to close our eyes and he walked us through a visual
twisting of our upper body of us going farther than we did. We opened our eyes and
twisted 25% more.
He then walked us through a couple brain break games that would break up a
classroom lesson. First one was to partner up and face them. Put your right palm
out facing to the ceiling; place your left hand pointer finger in your partners palm.
At the same time you have to lift up your finger and try to catch your partners
finger. Then you get into a group and do the same in a circle. (Called finger snatch)
Balloon tap was a game were 30 of us got in a group and held hands. We were
given a balloon to float in the air, we had to stay holding hands and keep the
balloon in the air. This is great for classroom building teamwork. We naturally
started calling out the colour of the balloon we were going to get.
Sitting down in a desk should be the break, standing and moving should be done
more than sitting. A lot of us consider standing a break, from sitting at the desk as
work.
Woosh Woah Zap was a game with the whole class in a circle. Make a cradle motion
and WOOSH to the person next to you. They can WOOSH to the person next to them
or they can WOAH (hold up hands in a stop position) and stop the run of cradle
passes. There is the option to also ZAP and pass the movement onto a person
across the circle from you.
Elbow pass involves the students getting in a circle and passing a ball around to
circle using only your elbows, once it gets around the circle, switch direction. This
activity builds teamwork and classroom community. Gets the students laughing and
focusing on where the ball is.
This workshop was very information overall and I got of great game ideas from it
that could be used in the gym or in the classroom.

Play Your Cards Right and Increase Physical Activity
This conference was about the plenty of different ways to use playing cards to get
kids active. Used in the classroom or the gym.
Card flip in partners is a game where you pair up and stand around the outskirts of
the gym. There are cards lined up on the floor in the center, one at a time, you and
your partner switch turns going into the center and flipping over 2 cards (try and
get a match). If you dont get a match, show your partner and then flip them face
down again and run back to the outside so your partner goes. If you get a pair, take
the cards back to your partner. You can use strategy like watching what other
people are flipping over around you.
Card math in partners, the whole class is walking around the gym clockwise. There
are cards laid face down all over the center of the gym. One at a time, you walk
away from your partner and pick up 2 cards from the center. Your partner will still be
walking clockwise, you have to find your partner and walk with them as you show
them your 2 cards. They have to add up the sum or multiply, once they guess the
right answer, then they have a turn going into the center and picking up the 2
cards. This is a great movement and math game.
Grouping in suits to make teams, this is just an easy way to

9:30 am-10:45 am
In this conference we learned some good games that involved a grab ball (GET ONE)
they are so cool. They are a rubber ball made out of stiff/bendable rubber netting.
Its a great ball to use for primary grades where they are still just learning how to
catch a ball. It makes catching a lot easier. Ive never been a strong catcher and I
was great at it! Another game that I will keep for the books was a game called
Spider. You need the students to be in groups of 5. Set the students up in a square,
and 1 person in the middle. 2 people on the outside will try to switch positions, as
the spider in the middle tries to get a spare spot. Very fun and can go on for a
while.

Functional Fitness for Large Groups and Small Spaces
To be short and sweet, we basically just did a workout that didnt involve travelling
very much, good for a class combo gym class if youre stuck with lots of kids and
dont have a lot of room. Basic moves like: push ups, ladder climb, and stretching
moves.
