the poem Dover beach is a poem about a person who might feel lonely to live

Intro: Outline how the poems tone changes over the course of the reading. It begins with a peaceful,
reflective note, but then in the second paragraph, the author realizes that sounds can also contain thoughts.
This leads to him becoming overly analytical, and he feels his faith slipping away (Sea of Faith receding),
which in turn leads to a feeling of isolation, which he tries to escape by gaining the faith of a person
(love), but that doesnt work because they end up together on a darkling plain where ignorant armies
clash
Each paragraph that you write will move through each section of the poem and explain the tone of that
paragraph and how the poems overall tone changes from paragraph to paragraph
1st paragraph: peaceful
In the first paragraph of dover beach the author creates a peaceful tone in the writing. In the first two lines
the author writes The sea is calm tonight. The tide is full, the moon lies fair . These two lines

give the reader a calming and peaceful feeling. They do that by talking about how calm the sea
is in the night, and how the moon lies fair and makes it so it is low lighting letting everything
settle down and maybe even go to sleep.
2nd paragraph: thoughtful
In the second paragraph the author constructs a more thoughtful paragraph. He does that by talking about
how sophocles a greek philosopher long ago also looked at the ocean and was filled with a sense of
misery.

Sophocles long ago

Heard it on the gean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery;
This passage makes the author start to be more thoughtful and aware of what's around him. And
also of his place in the time. But as we shall see this thoughtfulness changes into despair.
3rd paragraph: despairing
In the third paragraph the author conveys that he is despairing of the world. At the author really believed
and had a lot of faith. As it shows in these sentences, The Sea of Faith

Was once, too, at the full, and round earths shore

Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now the author thinks of it in a different way, he doesnt have as much faith for example he talks
about how he has lost his faith.

But now I only hear

Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,

Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.

4th: trying to be hopeful but

In the fourth paragraph the author tries to pull out of the despair and be hopeful again but doesnt succeed.
For example And we are here as on a darkling plain

Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,

Where ignorant armies clash by night.
He has another person in this mess and is making the small mess a bigger mess.
Overall the poem has progressed from peaceful, happy and gracefull to despairing and melancholic. In the
end it sadly ended in a tragic way.
