Concussions are caused by blows to the head over a period of time. Depending on
how hard the hit was, will determine the length of how long you will have the
concussion. Many sports have dealt with the problem of concussions within their players.
Many young athletes have died from these injuries ranging from football to soccer. Signs
of a concussions can be seen threw nausea, fatigue, confusion or memory problems. The
leading cause of concussions for males in high school is football while the leading cause
for females is soccer. Many processions have been put in place to protect athletes from
concussions but still the problem is very real and growing.

Concussions are a surprisingly common occurrence in sports. High school

athletes suffer thousands of concussions every year, most often in football, ice hockey,
and soccer(Nationwide Children's Hospital). Athletes who have had concussions can
suffer from second impact syndrome causing life threatening problems.

Neuropsychological assessment is widely regarded as the most sensitive way of

detecting disturbances in brain function associated with concussion(Nationwide
Children's Hospital). Improved conditioning of young athletes, especially strengthening
of neck muscles, may also help to prevent concussions(Nationwide Children's Hospital).
We need to do more research into the topic of concussions so we can save the young
athletes from life threatening injuries.
"What Is a Concussion?" What Is a Concussion? Brain Injury Research Institute,
n.d. Web. 17 Mar. 2016. <http://www.protectthebrain.org/Brain-Injury-Research/What-isa-Concussion-.aspx>.
Concussions can have serious and long-term health effects, and even a seemingly
mild 'ding' or a bump on the head can be serious(Brain Injury Research Institute). An
estimated 1.6-3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions occur in the United
States each year(Brain Injury Research Institute). A good percentage of boxers and other
athletes end the career with major and minor brain injuries that will affect their lives
forever. The more you get hit in the head the more it will affect you in the future and
hinder you. From my own experience of having concussions from my bouts the effects of
a major concussions last a very long time.
