Inclusion in Americas Public Schools
Barack Obama states We are at a time in our countrys that inclusive language is better
than exclusive language, I believe this quote has such a strong and important meaning to it
where he agrees inclusion must be take place and all people should be treated the same with this
said, no exclusion allowed. Segregation in public schools today? Yes, segregation still exists but
a different one that we are not aware of. When we think of segregation we always think about the
typical segregation that occurs in schools which is of race because that is the most common
segregation but we never think about the segregation of atypical students in different classes
from a typical students. An atypical student is a student that has some sort of disability. People
have not taken this case into importantance for the reason that they are fine with atypical students
being in their own classroom away from typical students not knowing that this is some sort of
segregation. Atypical students should be put in regular education classes in order for them to gain
social skills, opportunity to take higher level classes, and so they wont feel inferior.
The inclusion of disabled students in a regular education system will give them the
confidence to develop their social skills with the rest of their classmates. As Maurice Elias,
Professor of Psychology stated a way to help these students obtain their social skills is to form
UNITY group with the rest of their classmates. This club will not only unite the atypical
students with typical students but will also unite their race in a group. This will help students

with disabilities unite with students with non-disabilities and make them feel comfortable. This
club will help them interact with other students and not be as shy. It will also give the typical
students an opportunity to learn about the other students disabilities and get comfortable to when
they start having misbehaving problems. I had the opportunity to experience what its like in the
environment with atypical students. During my senior year of high school I had the opportunity
to be a teacher aid and work in a class with atypical students, every individual had different
social skills. When you first start interacting with them they seemed to be shy at first but as time
went by they started getting comfortable with me and would talk to me more often. The
experience that I had by helping and interacting with these individuals helped me learn a lot
about them which is when I discovered what I wanted to major in. Ive always wanted to be a
teacher and socialize with students but then I found out that I loved helping atypical students and
we need more teachers that specialize in that area. With the inclusion of disabled students in a
regular education system it will help them gain their social skills with the rest of the students and
make it easier for them to communicate without feeling shy.
There are many times where atypical students want to have the opportunity to take higher
level classes, however many of our public schools dont give these students an opportunity. The
public schools usually place these atypical students in their own classes with the rest of disabled
students. I am going to take a level in math and receive an A (Haddon, 44). In the book the
curious incident of the dog in the night-time Christopher was an atypical student with autism that
challenged himself, and was determined to take higher level math and was going to prove to
others that even though he was an autistic child that wouldnt stop him from achieving a higher
math level. He was able to accomplish things as general child would do so. He felt that he was
capable of taking higher level math and was going to prove everyone wrong whom doubted him

because of his disorder. Overall throughout the book, Christopher was described as a very smart
individual. Also as mentioned in the book he was trying to solve the case of who had killed the
dog even though he was told not to. In my high school there was some disabled students put in
general education classes with the rest of the student , however they did have a mentor with them
just in case they needed help. They were never in lack of help always had the help they needed
and a person they can go if they ever had questions. I had an atypical student in my math class
my junior year and he was very good at math where I thought about how intelligent these
students can be. In many cases these students like Christopher are looked upon as not being
capable of taking these hard classes not knowing that these students are very smart although they
tend to learn in a different level. Overall these students deserve an opportunity to take higher
level courses to show off their intelligence and prove people wrong.
Since disabled students are being segregated from their other peers there is a high
percentage they will feel inferior. When you feel inferior is when think you feel less than others
and feel like you dont belong in a certain place. Disabled students often have a higher
percentage of being emotional than others; they are easily to get their feeling hurt for the reason
that they may feel less than others. To make these students feel the same as other students,
teachers can assign classwork and projects more often in order for them to interact with each
other. Assigning more group work in class will help the students work with one another and be
treated the same as others. As Maurice Elias, professor of psychology stated developing inclusive
learning projects so that general education and special education can work together. This is a
great way for all students to join and make the special Ed students feel comfortable with
themselves and their disability. In addition, it is a great way for the general Ed to get to know
more about the disability of the other student and know how to react in certain situation amongst

Robles 4

them. In order to make special Ed feel the same as general education students and not left out
inclusion of special Ed students in a general education system must be take place in public
schools.
Many say that disabled students should be excluded from a regular education system
because of their learning disability; because they learn at a slower level. They do learn at a
slower learning level because of their disability because it takes them times to develop their
ideas. For this reason they should be in their own classes so they can get one on one help from
their teacher and more attention to them. However public school should have these individuals
included in this regular education system so these individuals can show off their skills that they
have. It will help them develop their social skills, opportunity to take higher level classes, and
become less inferior. These individuals are worth the same as every other person and should be
treated the same, therefore should be put in the regular education system. They are very smart
and are capable of taking higher level classes as the general education students are. They can be
very shy at first, however once they get to know them comfortable they are very outgoing and
the sweetest individuals you can ever meet. Although these individuals have a learning disability
they have brilliant minds.
By public schools inclusion, of the Special Ed students into General Ed classes gives
students many academic opportunities to learn. It will prove to others that are in doubt of them to
take higher level classes and will show that are very smart. It will teach them to communicate
with others feeling comfortable with each other. Then students will also feel more comfortable
and less inferior when in the same class as the other students. To make the world a better place
and school environments inclusion must take place in order for all the general education and
special education students to be in unity and no discrimination allowed among these students.
