WBL Plan
Program Overview:
The program I plan to create will have a little bit of something for everyone. My main
goal in creating and starting up a work-based learning program is to get as many students as I
can experience in the workforce, to better prepare them for the future and help them find their
passion. My work-based learning program will have a wide variety of options for students to
complete such as one or multiple day job shadowing, youth apprenticeships that could
potentially last up to two years, and even local co-ops. Through this program students will be
more confident in themselves when they leave school knowing how to function in the workplace.
School Setting:
The school I plan to start a work based learning program at is Chisago Lakes High
School, which currently has a very small work placed learning program, featuring just a schoolenterprise program. The school is located in Lindstrom, Minnesota and is made up of several
surrounding cities including Chisago City, Center City, Scandia, Shafer, Franconia Township,
and Taylors Falls. These towns have roughly a population of 17,000 people combined. The area
is located on the boarder of eastern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and is a very close knit Swedish
community. The school is located near many ag related business including several landscaping
companies, manufacturing businesses, engineering and technology businesses, and many
farms, orchards and nurseries.
Currently, Chisago Lakes High School has a strong Ag Science department and features
the following classes: Floriculture, Advanced Floriculture, Plant Science, Plant and Animal CSI,
Landscape Horticulture, Youth Leadership Seminar, Fisheries and Wildlife Management,
Greenhouse Management, Advanced Natural Resources, as well as, Forest Recourse

Management, Animal Science I&II, Small Animals, Horse Science, and Natural Resources. The
Ag Science department features a strong award-winning FFA and a work based enterprise, their
class-run greenhouse. It also features a large business program which includes the following
classes: Web Design I&II, Computer Applications I&II, Business and Personal Law, Personal
Money Management, Accounting I&II, Intro to Business, Small Business, and Marketing I&II.
The business program has an award-winning DECA Program and the other school based
enterprise, a school store and concession stand the program students run. Chisago Lakes also
has a FACS program with the following classes: Child Development I&II, Fashion, Fashion
Merchandising, Housing and Interior Design, Consumer Foods I&II, FACS 9, Independent
Living, and Teen Issues. This school also has a Technology Education department that features
classes like: Autos I&II, Computer Construction and Repair, Autos for Girls, Small Engines,
Small Engine Repair, Woodworking, Advanced Woodworking I&II, Metals I&II, Intro to CAD, 3D
CAD with Inventor, Architectural Drafting I&II, and PLTW Introduction to Engineering Design.
The school has roughly 1,000 students enrolled at their schools in grades 9-12. Majority of the
students are white and come from a low-to-middle class background.
Rational:
An expanded work based learning program at this school would heavily benefit the
students that attend this school. The school has a large CTE program, and it would really give a
large range of students the hands on, in-depth experience they cant get from classroom
instruction alone. This would also give the students an idea of the wide range of careers that
available to them. The school is very heavy on promoting four year colleges to the students,
leaving them unknowing of all of the other possibilities there are. It would also give the students
confidence in themselves and in the workplace when they leave high school and enter the world
of careers and jobs. I think putting a work-based learning program in this school would benefit

nearly every student in the school because they will know college is not the only option after
high school.
Standards:
AFNR Standards this program will address are: Apply Management Planning principals
in AFNR Businesses, which also aligns with Common Cores English Language Arts/ Literacy
Standards, Math, and the National Standards for Financial Literacy. Use record keeping to
accomplish AFNR business objectives, manage budgets and comply with laws and regulations,
which as well aligns with Common Cores ELA, Math and NSFL. Utilize best-practice protocols
based upon animal behaviors for animal husbandry and welfare, which aligns with Next
Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Apply principles of effective animal health care, which
aligns with Commons Cores math, Green/Sustainability Knowledge and Skill Statements (KSS
and NGSS). Analyze environmental factors associated with animal production, which aligns with
KSS and NGSS. Assess factors that have influenced the evolution of biotechnology agriculture
(e.g., historical events, societal trends, ethical and legal implications, etc.), which aligns with
Commons Core ELA, NGSS, and KSS. Standard: Use analytical procedures and instruments to
manage environmental service systems, aligning with Common Core Math, ELA, and NGSS.
Evaluate the impact of public policies and regulations on environmental service system
operations, which is in alignment with KSS.
Many of the standards under AFNR, also have crosswalk and align with Common Cores
Math and ELA as well as NGSS, KSS, and NSFL. Having all of these crosswalks makes it
easier to incorporate them into a classroom.
School-Based Component Overview:
Adding courses like Youth Apprenticeship, Co-op Programs, and even Job Shadowing
will really help gear the students in the direction of life they want to go in. Apprenticeship and
Co-ops will allow students an unforgettable experience in AFNR programs. The length of the

program can be between one and two years, and allow students a hands on opportunity at a
location of their choosing. These classes will also feature a classroom component that will tie
the things they are learning in the workplace to academic subjects at school. The goals of the
programs are to allow students a unique hands-on experience in the workplace, as well as
gaining confidence and leadership qualities. The students will be graded on their efforts and
evaluations given by their coopering businesses as well as in-class graded assignments like
quizzes and papers. The quizzes and papers will be on general safety and other topics
discussed in class.
Work Based Component Overview:
The students must have respect and responsibility to be considered for the program.
They must be in decent standings for grades, and show interest in being apart of the program.
The students must be ambitious and want to be in the program, and complete and application
and interview process with the teacher and cooperating business to be accepted into the
program. The application and interview process also helps the student to get a real like
experience when it comes to getting a job.
The business must want to allow students to come in and work for them. The business
must also be willing to fill out the required forms and evaluations for the student. The business
must be a respected business in the AFNR categories, and be in high standing in the
community. The employers must want to train the students and have an interest in working with
the students every step of the way. The employers will also be interviewed by the instructor, to
ensure the students are going to get a quality work-based learning experience.
Coordinator Responsibilities:
The coordinator must know every business and employer the students are going to, to
ensure safe and quality experiences. The coordinator must also check-in on the students at
their place of work, to make sure everything is going as smoothly as they say it is. The

coordinator must also make quality material that is going to be revenant for the cooperating
classes they are going to be teaching. The coordinator must make sure the program is running
smoothly and taking precautions to avoid any legal situations.
