Grade 3 Mathematics mass lesson review and evaluation

Student achievement
-Most students followed instructions and made a conjecture prior to measuring. Students
who made a conjecture also re-evaluated this, after obtaining results.
-Most students recordings of metric units for mass were correct.
-Students understanding of the terms heavy and light as being used to describe the mass
of items became apparent.
-Students reflected on one thing that they learnt about mass.
-Able to identify where mass is used in everyday life.
Teaching effectiveness
-Getting students attention was effective. Becoming more confident has assisted in being
able to get students attention.
-Explanation of the task.
-Good application of probing questions.
-Roving as students worked.
-Checking that students wrote a conjecture, prior to measuring.
-Having students reflect on something new they learnt from this lesson about mass.
Improvement:
Something that I will improve on in future measurement lessons is ensuring that ALL
students record a conjecture/estimate individually prior to investigation. This could even be
completed prior to sending students off. I noticed that a few students simply went straight
into measuring, without completing this important part of the learning activity.

Feedback from supervising teaching:

-Much more confident in her delivery of the lesson.
-Actively engaged the students
-Used an exit pass to identify student understanding/learning.
-Addressed misconceptions from previous lesson.

Foundation writing session evaluation

Writing session- Practicing handwriting using dotted thirds correctly.

Student achievement:
-Most students were able to write the statement which included all the letters of alphabet,
that was demonstrated to them in tuning in, using the dotted thirds correctly.
-Students followed instructions.
-Students carefully watched the demonstration of how to form each letter using the dotted
thirds, which I modelled in tuning in.
-All students completed the set task and some went onto the extension task.
-Learning outcome was evidently achieved.
Teaching effectiveness:
-Explicitly modelling the task set for students to complete. Positioning myself so that
students could clearly see how I was forming the letters, as I was writing them.
-Roving around the classroom as students were working and providing extra assistance to
those who needed enabling. I helped them by applying the enabling prompt- I either wrote
the word for the student/s to write over or started off the word, for the student/s to see how I
used the dotted third lines.
-Students were engaged and concentrated on practicing their writing.
Possible improvement/implication for next writing session:
This lesson informed teaching. As I roved around I observed that in the next writing session,
I should take a small focus group, to further practice and model, how to use the dotted third
lines correctly with those students who I identified as needing extra assistance.
