Abstract:
In 2009 the Common Core state standards were released because before than each state had their
own set of standards.Common Core are high-quality standards in English language arts/literacy
and mathematics. After the common core was created it regulated the requirements and standards

throughout the U.S in all of the participating states. Common core was adopted by forty-two
states, The District of Columbia, four territories and The Department of Defence Education
Activity. Another reason why the common core was created was to ensure that all students have
the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in college, career, and your life upon graduation.
Today, everything that is done in a public school classroom is done and based on Common Core.
A few years ago there were not the same standards and regulations that there are today. Although
there were still standards in effect, they varied from state to state
Common Core impacts multiple people and had become a very important part to our
school systems. The key to implementing the standards is having a strong leadership. A majority
of educators supported this adaptation of common core and anticipate the benefits for their
students. Implementation to remain smooth requires clear communication and an open discussion
between the policymakers, education leaders, teachers, staff, parents, and students. Also, other
groups including collaborative teams, cooperative learning groups and learning communities are
needed to help stakeholders at all levels to build and discuss implementation plans for
during, before and after the process. These are some of the many main individuals that common
core greatly impacts. Some of the ways that it impacts teacher is by providing them with a
consistent benchmark and goal to ensure that the students are progressing. Then for those
children who may have just moved into the district from a different state there is at least a
consistent expectation throughout. Common core also gave teachers the opportunity to
collaborate with other teachers throughout the country. As both will develop curricula, materials,
and assessments that are all linked to the high-quality standards.
The importance and significance behind common core is to have high standards
consistently across the states. Providing the teachers, parents and students with clear expectations
that ensure all students have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in college, career,
and life upon graduating from high school. These standards are made to align with the

expectations of employers, colleges and workforce training programs. Previous state standards
were varied from state to state and every state had a different level of proficiency. Which is the
level at which a student is determined to be sufficiently educated. Then when the common core
state standards were put into effect it developed a range of policies and tools. Development of
digital media, textbooks and other teaching material and other tools to ensure students are on the
path to success. Also the development and implementation of a common comprehensive
assessment system that replaced the existing state testing. This was used in order to measure
student performance annually as well as providing teacher with specific feedback.
The last several decades have always had a push for national or common academic
standards. So it may seem new but in reality it is not, a lot of our country's Presidents dating back
to Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1959 had goals for education. However, it wasnt till 2009 when the
common core state standards were released in draft form. Then on June 2, 2010 a final version of
the common core state standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics are released.
Later that year in September the U.S Department of Education gives SBAC and PARCC $330
million dollars to create next-generation assessments. During the 2010-2011 School year,
Awareness efforts begin in multiple education agencies and school districts begin to provide
professional development opportunities for their educators. In the 2011-2012 School year
educators begin to dabble with the standards in classroom instruction and Professional
development focuses on a deeper understanding of the standards. By the Summer of 2012 fortysix states had adopted the standards.
