K.G.A.2. Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or

overall size.
1.G.A.1. Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are
closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color,
orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess
defining attributes.

Focuses student
attention on the
objective and the
purpose of the lesson
Activates prior
knowledge
Requires ACTIVE
PARTICIPATION from
ALL learners

Teaching-Input:
Using effective and varied
strategies, the teacher
provides information for
students to gain the concept,
strategy, or skill.

Students will identify shapes (square, rectangle, circle, or triangle)

by either naming it when asked or picking/pointing to the correct
shape then making or drawing the shape with 100% accuracy.

Guided Practice:
An opportunity for each
student to demonstrate new
learning by working through
an activity or exercise with the
teachers guidance.

Closure:

Actions or statements
made by teachers AND
students that summarize

Independent Practice:
AFTER proper closure, it is
important to provide time for
additional practice. It may be
group or individual work in
class or it might be
homework.

teacher will describe the shape using vocabulary words (side, face,
vertex, round, straight). The teacher will either make a shape out of
toothpicks and marshmallows, geometry tools or draw the shape
on a piece of paper.

The teacher will ask students to either name a shape or pick of the
requested shape.

Students will be taught how to draw or make each shape.

The teacher will ask each student to name each shape.

Students will have time to make additional shapes.

Formative assessment on which students can name/point out the

indicated shape and who can draw/make each shape.

Some students will draw and make shapes. Some students will
only make shapes. Some students will use shape tiles to make
animals.

Songs/videpos about each shape will be shown in the anticipatory
