Plan for set-up/distribution/cleanup of materials:

For this lesson, I will have pre-made my anchor chart before class and place it towards the front
of the rug for when it is time for use. I will also prepare my mystery community helper puzzle to
use as the introduction to my lesson. The activity worksheets that I will have for the class will be
prepared and copied ahead of time. They will be distributed when I call the students back to their
desks. There are two worksheets that I have created to differentiate amongst the students. When
it is time to clean up, students will put away their pencils/crayons and will prepare for the next
instructions.
Step-by-Step plan:
1) After the students have come back from their specials, I will ask the students to come and
sit at the rug in rows in front of the chair and the easel. I will introduce to the students
stating, Today, we will start learning about our first community helper! Can anyone take
a guess as to which community helper we will be learning about today?. I will wait for
the students to respond. After the students have made their guesses, I will introduce our
mystery community helper puzzle. I will state, Each day, we will be solving our mystery
community helper puzzle to figure out who we will be learning about for that day. I will
ask for volunteers to help me solve the mystery puzzle for the class.
2) After the students have solved the mystery community helper puzzle, we will go into a
discussion about the different types of teachers that they know. We will create an anchor
chart of all the different kinds of teachers and the roles/jobs that they are responsible for. I
will ask the students questions such as, In our school we have many kinds of teachers,
what are the different kinds of teachers that we have? and What are the roles/jobs that
these teachers have in our community and in the school?. I will go into discussing with
the students why teachers are important to our community and discuss what they do to
help the school and the whole community function.
3) When we begin to wrap-up the discussion and the anchor chart, I will discuss a step-bystep plan of a how to activity. The activity that I will discuss with the students is how to
make a ham and cheese sandwich. I will ask the students to stand up around the perimeter
of the rug. I will then ask the students to close their eyes and envision themselves in the
kitchen going to the refrigerator. I will ask the class to act out opening a fridge. Then I
will ask the class, What is the first thing we need to make a ham and cheese sandwich?
I will do this until all the steps of the sandwich were listed. After this visual instruction, I
will introduce to the students the how to worksheet that they will complete.
4) On the activity worksheet that I will give to the students to work on at their desks, they
will have to think of one activity they would like to teach the class. They will have to
draw the how to steps of the activity, as well as, there is an option to write down the
steps on another worksheet. I will show my model worksheet to the class. When the
students have finished they can become book lovers until the majority of the class has
finished. I will ring a chime to signal for a five-minute warning, as well as the end to the
activity.

5) When the students have finished, we will go back to the rug sitting around the perimeter.
I will ask for any volunteers to teach to the class their activity through their step-bystep instructions and then the class will have to guess what the activity is. I will have
about 2-3 volunteers teach their activities to the class.
6) Closure: After, we will gather altogether at the rug and discuss what they have learned
through the lesson and activity. We will discuss how teachers help to grow one another to
learn new things so that it can help individuals throughout their lives.
Key Questions (that you will ask):
-

What is the role of teachers in a school community?

How do teachers help individuals and the community as a whole?
What makes the role of teachers important in helping the school to function as one big
community?
What would happen our school had no teachers? How would a school function?

Logistics:
Timing: (~ given 1 hour)
-

Introduction/Mystery Community Helper Puzzle (~ 10 minutes)

Discussion/Anchor Chart (~ 10 minutes)
Modeling Activity/ (~ 10 minutes)
Teacher Instruction Activity Worksheet (~20 minutes)
Student Activity Share (~ 10 minutes)

Transitions:
- For this lesson, we will begin the lesson at the rug. At the rug we will complete our mystery
community helper puzzle, teacher discussion, creating an anchor chart, and doing the modeling
activity. After we have completed these activities, I will ask students to work at their desks to
complete a teacher instruction activity, which they will try to teach the class. After they have
finished the worksheet activity, the students will gather back at the rug to teach their activities to
the class.
Classroom Management:
- For this lesson, the students will begin the lesson at the rug. Since this lesson has a lot of
activities that is needed to be completed on the rug, I will do running races as well as stretches
to get the students bodies moving. I will ask the students to do body checks when the students
are not sitting properly. I will say chants to get the students attention when they are not paying
attention. I will ask students to quietly raise their hands and I will call on quiet ready learners to
answer the questions that I will be asking. I will utilize the chime as a warning signal, as well as
a signal to end the activity. I will call ready tables to go back to their desk by those who are
seated crisscross and all eyes on me.
Differentiation
- In this lesson, students will discuss as a whole class their ideas of the importance of teachers.
Students will turn and talk with partners to share their thoughts and ideas before sharing it as a
whole to the class. After, students will have help in creating a step-by-step instruction as a class

on the activity of creating a ham and cheese sandwich. When it is time for the students to do their
activity, they will choose an activity of their choice and draw a step-by-step instruction on how
to teach their activity to the class. They will draw up to four steps and are given the option to
take a challenging worksheet, which gives students an option to write down their steps in words.
This gives students the ability to choose their own-leveled step-by-step activity to teach to the
class.
