Annotated Bibliography for Child Poverty

Many studies have documented the correlation between family poverty and childrens
health, achievement, and behavior, however there are few studies that measure the effects
things like timing, depth and duration of poverty on children. In this reading it shows that
family income is related to childrens ability and achievement than to their emotional
outcomes. Children in extreme poverty or those who live under the poverty line for three
or more years suffer the worst outcomes. Also, the time in a childs life is important for
child outcomes. Especially children who experience poverty during their preschool and
early school years have much lower rates of school completion.

Development." Child Development 71.1 (2000): 188-96. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.
It is a known fact that poverty has a negative influence on a childs health and
development. Poverty is associated with increased neonatal and post-neonatal mortality
rates, higher risk of injuries, greater risk for asthma and lower scores on tests. In this
paper there is a general model being suggested that should be incorporated when
investigating the impact of poverty on children.

This article is the most current initiatives the federal government has taken to fix
childhood poverty. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes a $20 billion
increase for the Supplemental Nutrition Program, which is also known as Food Stamps.

There is also more funding for food banks and Special Supplemental Nutrition Programs
for women, infants, and children (WIC). This act provides tax breaks to working families
through the Make Work Pay and Child Tax Credits. A result will be a larger credit for
families with three or more children.
