Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) is used as nitrogen supplying fertilizer in the

agricultural industry. It is solid under ambient conditions. Upon dilution with
water, it dissociates in positive ammonia ions and negative nitrate ions that
can directly be absorbed by the plants.
Until now, DSM Agro has been using magnetic flowmeters with ceramic
liners for process control within the fertilizer production. During the
measurement of the liquid ammonium nitrate at a temperature of 190 °C,
cracks appeared in the ceramic liner of the meters as a consequence of
the thermal stress. This lead to repeated failures of the instruments. After

successful test measurements with a portable FLUXUS ADM flowmeter,
the magmeters were replaced by stationary ultrasonic flowmeters from
FLEXIM. The latter have now worked trouble free for two years.
