Title: Vibrational Water

Abstract: We wanted to test our theory that the higher the frequency of a sound wave
the more intricate the interference patterns would be in a liquid medium. So we decided
to take a set of speakers and connect them to a tone generator. Then we placed a
tupperware on the speakers. We then poured 5mm of water into the tupperware. We
started at a frequency of 140 and stopped at a frequency of 300. Our results were those
which we expected.
Hypothesis: The higher the frequency the more intricate the interference patterns will
be.
Intro:In this experiment we are trying to test if the higher the frequency the more
intricate the interference patterns. The concepts needed to understand in this
experiment are how sound waves work and how they produce vibrations differing
depending on the higher or lower the frequency. Our estimated outcome is that as we
make the frequency higher the more intricate the interference patterns will be. Sound
waves work almost the same way as any other type of wave. They have frequencies
and bounce off of mediums. The higher the frequency in a sound wave the smaller the
vibration is produced. This allows for more intricate patterns. This is the reason our
experiment worked.

Methods and Materials: Speaker, Paint, Water, Other substances as we see fit and a
tone generator. First we hooked up the tone generator too the speaker and then places
a tupperware with 5mm of water onto the speakers. We tested this twice. We could
clearly see the interference waves. The next test we did was changing depth of the
water in the tupperware. We made it 10mm instead of 5mm and tested it twice aging.
We could barely see very tiny splashes in it. It almost looked like the water was static.
Next we did a test with 5mm of water with paint mixed with the water. The paint made it
look really cool but other than that it didnt change it. We then made the depth 10mm of
water and paint mixed. The results were the same as the previous tests with 10mm of

water
Results:
The results were that as the depth of the substance got deeper the less you could see
the patterns on the water. The 5mm patterns could easily be seen while the 10mm
patterns couldnt.

Discussion:
Our experiment was to test if the frequency of a sound wave affects it ability to make
interference patterns in a substance. The results were that the deeper the substance
the less you can see the interference patterns. This means that it takes a more
powerful speaker to make interference patterns in a thicker substance. We are confident
in our results because we tested them and saw that with our own eyes that they were
true. We can improve the experiment by using more substances that differ in density.
We can also improve the experiment by testing more depths than just two. It would
greatly increase the amount of data that we have and possibly change our results.
