Survey Feedback Reflection Form

Allison Slysz
Phase I: Before the Survey
Determine the assessment you will use.
I used the CAP student feedback survey that was provided to us.
Phase II: During the Survey
Administer the assessment and collect the data.
I administered the survey on May 9th, 2016 to both of my sections of 10 th grade biology.
Phase III: After Administering the Survey
Organize the data in a visual representation completed below.
Share the visual with your SP and discuss done.
Provide a written analysis of the data to accompany the visual completed below.

Student Comments:
- I liked the old style of homework better.
- I think notes are an effective way of learning, but they can become boring when
taken all class.
- I like the creativity of the labs.
- It has been very fun!
- Very good way of teaching because its easy to follow along and it covers a lot!
- You are very awesome and good at explaining things in different ways.
- I like the format of your tests and how you switch it up from test to test so its not
boring.
- I really enjoy the class and I like the way you teach a lot because most of the
stuff we do is visual.
- Great teacher! I like the Powerpoints, but you could go a little slower.

My Practice - I think that these student comments are extremely insightful. I wish
that more of my students took advantage of writing comments on the back of the
survey, but this is what I had to work with. The positives are really helpful, like
having things be easy to follow along, the labs are creative, mixing up the formats of
the tests to keep things fresh and new, and that Im good at explaining things in
different ways, especially visually. Those are things that I will definitely continue to
work towards consistently for these students.
The things that I could improve upon are very obvious in these comments as
well. For example, theres a student who doesnt like how I dont assign homework
very often, so probably, when I do, they dont want to do it or forget to do it since it
happens inconsistently. I also agree with the student who said that taking notes all
class can be boring, because it absolutely can be, but I make sure to incorporate at
least one lab per unit, along with at least one group activity per week. Lastly, Im
glad that a student picked up on the fact that I could move/talk more slowly,
especially because my Program Supervisor mentioned the same thing back during
my first three-way meeting. It is definitely a skill that Ill have to improve upon over
time, especially since Ive always been a fast-moving person, but Ill get there.

My Practice - I feel as though I demonstrate that making mistakes is a part of

learning regularly, and it shows and is apparent based on the student feedback. When I
teach lessons and have typos in my Google Slides Presentations or make errors with
calculations, I am open and honest about them, I fix them right away, and thank
students for pointing out these errors. I also find myself being asked questions by
students that I have no idea what the answer is, but I will make a list on the board of
these questions/concerns and research the answers to them on my own time to then be
able to report them back to the students. When they ask me these things in the
moment, I, again, and open, honest, and up front with them, telling students that I do not
know the answer but that Id look up the answer and get back to them. They seem to
like this and it demonstrates that I follow through and am reliable. The fact that 92% of
the students I teach either agree or strongly agree with this statement is a sign that I
should continue modeling this behavior for my students. This data relates to Standard
II.B.1 Safe Learning Environment. I think that this essential element is one of my
strengths already, and this data confirmed that.

Statement #2: My teacher asks us to summarize

My Practice - Seeing this data was reaffirming that I ask students to summarize
what they have learned after a lesson or a series of lessons through formative and
summative assessment. 100% of my students either agree or strongly agree with this
statement, which again informs me that I should continue doing what Im doing, asking
students to summarize what theyve learned, and asking them to repeat
instructions/directions that I give to make sure they know what we are doing that class
and what is expected of them. This statement relates to Standard I.A.4 Well
Structured Lessons. I also think that this is another of my strong suits, so the data
confirms what I believe I have already been doing.

My Practice - Throughout this semester, Ive really tried to incorporate more

group projects, activities, and opportunities for students to work collaboratively I even
set this as my professional practice goal. I think that Ive really come a long way from
the first day to now, and I think that my struggle and journey is represented in the data
above. Now that I have the activities incorporated in the curriculum, I think that I could
now focus more on group dynamics, encouraging students to teach one another and
use each other as sources of motivation for completing assignments, activities, and
labs. I am still happy with the results (that 69% of students do push one another to do
better work in the class), but I would really like to improve upon the 31% who disagree.
This statement represents Standard II.D.2 High Expectations. I really thought that I
had this essential element well-practiced and incorporated into my lessons and
classroom environment, but Im realizing from this data that this is probably the
essential element that I need to work on the most.

My Practice - 8% of students I teach are not satisfied with the degree of difficulty
of this class. Although 92% agree that the work in the class is challenging yet not too
difficult, I really want all of my learners to feel challenged, and knowing that there is 8%
of my students who dont feel that way makes me want to reach them. There are those
students in my class that routinely do really well on assessments, labs, and activities,
but there are also students in my class who underperform and do not do well on them.
This data shows me that I need to find ways to challenge those at the top of my class
more so that I dont lose them in boredom. This statement refers to Standard II.D.2
High Expectations. Yet again, I thought I had this essential element covered well in my
instruction, but clearly this is something I need to work on.

Statement #5: In my class, my teacher uses

My Practice - 77% of students that I teach believe that I use their interests to
plan class activities, whereas 23% believe that I do not. I try to get to know my students
and their interests really well, but as a teacher candidate, Im realizing that Im spending
more of my time addressing and meeting all standards of the MA Curriculum
Frameworks and spending less time on tailoring my lessons to my students specific
interests. Im actually surprised that there werent more than 23% of students who
disagreed, just because I realize that I dont do this as much as I should, but this data
informs me that I really should try to incorporate more aspects of my instruction that
relate to student interests. This statement is in accordance with Standard I.A.4 Well
Structured Lessons, and I think that I can improve upon this with experience.

Statement #6: The level of my work in this class

My Practice - Since this statement is very similar to the fourth one about the
work being challenging but not too difficult, I expected these results to draw parallels. I
was right, with about 77% agreeing and 23% disagreeing. I really need to work on
setting the bar higher for students who need it so that they can surpass their
expectations of their own work and capabilities, while also meeting the needs and
expectations for other learners. This further shows that the essential element that I
really need to work on is II.D.2 High Expectations.

My Practice - Since this statement is very similar to the fifth one, I expected the
results to be equivalent. There is 27% of students who dont believe that I use their
interests to explain difficult ideas to them. Yet again, I think that I will be more proficient
in this area as I gain more teaching experience and have my lessons and units pretty
well done and thought out ahead of time. I really enjoy trying to get to know students to
the point where I could do this, but at this point in time, I am very happy with the 73% of
students who feel that I do try to use their interests to explain difficult ideas to them,
which aligns with Standard II.A.3 Meeting Diverse Needs.

Statement #8: In this class, I learn how to use

to support my learning.

My Practice - 69% of students that I teach agree with the fact that I incorporate
technology into my lessons and units so that students are learning how to use these
tools as well. I actually expected a larger percentage to agree with this statement
because I created a Google Classroom for my students, I post announcements there
and links to all Google Slides Presentations that I make, the NoteCatchers students use
in class, Lab Resources, Data Tables, etc. I also recently assigned students a
project/presentation where they have to present information to the class on a disorder or
disease, and almost every student has used Google Slides and shared it with me, and
one student even created a video. Not only am I encouraging students to use Google
Classroom and view the resources that I make available to them, but to utilize Google
Docs, Slides, Sheets, etc. so that we all can collaborate. This data corresponds to
Standard I.A.4 Well Structured Lessons, and I believe that I use technology in a way
where it is modeled for students to use themselves.

My Practice - I expected great numbers on this one because I never feel as if

Im killing time or trying to fill space with activities or scrambling to find something to do.
I come to class every day prepared and ready to go, and we either finish what I
intended during the class period, or we even go over the time allotted and carry it over
to the next day. I was right in the sense that 88% of my students agree with this
statement, but I am curious about why the 12% think that our class wastes time. Im
wondering if these students interpret student/peer questions as straying from task or if
they see others not paying attention and interpret that as being off task and wasting
time. Im also curious as to what these students of the 12% suggest that I do as the
teacher to minimize being off task as a class and to not waste time. This data aligns
with Standard II.B.1 Safe Learning Environment, which is an essential element that I
feel is one of my strengths.

My Practice - I was pleasantly surprised by this data! In my opinion, this is one

of the most important and valuable pieces of data because it has to do with students
showing what they know and have learned, and representing it in various ways. 100%
(all) of my students agree with the fact that they think they can show their learning in
many ways (e.g., writing, graphs, pictures, etc.) in my class. This informs me that Im
doing well with reaching all learners in my classroom, and as a result, they are feeling
confident in their abilities and capabilities to show what they know. This statement
corresponds to Statement II.A.3 Meeting Diverse Needs. When I first started my
practicum, I thought that this was going to be one of my weakest essential elements, but
I really have surprised myself this semester.
