Common and proper nouns (Concept)
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):
Given a paragraph, students will apply their knowledge of nouns by underlining all common nouns and
circling all proper nouns with 90% accuracy.
DOK Level: 2 because students will apply knowledge of nouns, which falls under the apply level.

IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activity):
Teacher will read A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink! What is a Noun to the class.
By the end of the lesson you will understand the difference between common and proper nouns by
completing a worksheet where you must underline all common nouns and circle all proper nouns.
Purpose: You will see that some nouns are common and some are proper and there are rules to using nouns.
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology With Student Activities):
1. Define Noun
T. What are nouns?
T. Nouns are a person, place, thing, or idea.
S. Students will give teacher examples of nouns from each category.
2. Define Common Noun
T. What are common nouns?
T. Common nouns are not capitalized and generally name a person, place, thing, or idea.
S. Students will share common nouns with a partner.
3. Exception to common nouns
T. Some common nouns are capitalized.
T. They are only capitalized if they are at the beginning of a sentence.
S. Students will give teacher examples of sentences that begin with common nouns.
4. Define Proper Noun

T. What are proper nouns?


T. Proper nouns name a particular person, place, thing, or idea and are always capitalized.
S. Students will share with each other what is a proper noun.
5. How to identify common nouns
T. How do we identify common nouns?
T. We will look at some sentences and underline the common nouns.
S. Teacher will write sentences on the board and students will come up and underline the common
nouns.
6. How to identify proper nouns
T. How do we identify proper nouns?
T. We will look at some sentences and circle the proper nouns.
S. Teacher will write sentences on the board and students will come up and circle the proper nouns.

Students will underline all common nouns and circle all proper nouns on a worksheet.

V. Assessment strategies (methods for obtaining evidence of learning):
Formative: During step 2 and 4 teacher will listen to student responses to check for understanding.
During application activity, teacher will walk around and observe students working on worksheets and
provide feedback if necessary.
Summative: Teacher will collect worksheets from students and grade them.
VI. ACCOMMODATIONS and/or MODIFICATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL LEARNERS (Content,
Instruction, Practice):
Accommodations: Teacher will ask students to only work on either common or proper nouns instead of
both.
Modifications: Allow students to provide verbal responses instead of written.
