Harvest the Crop Lesson Plan

Concept:
*Student will be able understand and define the harvesting process.
*Students be able to distinguish between the different parts of produce we choose to eat
*Students will be able to understand the complete cycle of agriculture, from seed to plate
Objective:
*Define harvest
*Discuss the various crops harvested
*Identify the parts of produce
*Describe plants and their fruit
*Identify the cycle from seed to plate
Materials:
*From Seed to Plate
*Produce pictures
*Sequence cards
*chart paper
*markers
*crayons
*blank booklets
Lesson:
1. Watch the following videos. Discuss and chart their noticings about harvesting. Key in on
the details related to harvesting crops. Brainstorm a list of plants that we eat. Have the
students identify which part of the plant we eat: leaves, root, fruit, etc. Chart their
examples accordingly.
2. Use the plant/produce picture cards to distribute to the children. After each child has a
card, ask them to group themselves according to which part of their plant is eaten. Repeat
a few times changing cards.
3. Ask the students to recall their new learning throughout their summer camp experience
regarding planting and harvesting. What occurs in order for us to have edible plants to
eat? Encourage them to identify the process involved from seed to plate. Record their
recollections on chart paper. Label and identify each step.
4. Provide students with the sequencing activity to complete independently. The students
can either cut and paste the text portion in their booklet, or write it themselves.
Informational Writing:
What types of plants are harvested? Why is it important to grow and harvest produce?
Exit Slip:
Give an example of a plant we eat and which part of the plant we eat. What are the steps
involved with growing produce for us to eat?
