Over3.2millionstudentsarevictimsofbullyingeachyear.Itisestimatedthat160,000
childrenmissschooleverydayduetofearofattackorintimidationbyotherstudents
(nobullying).Whydoesbullyinghappen?Isbullyingseriousandcanaffectsomeoneseverely?
Bullyingiscontributedtomanydifferentreasonsand
a
ffectspeopleinanumberofdifferent
ways
withamildtosevereaftermath.
Thereareseveralfactorsthatcantriggertheactionsofanybully
.Manyfactorsinclude
feelingpowerless,beingbullied,
feelinginvisible,emotionallydistantparents,bothphysicaland
verbalabuse
,attentionseeker,controlling,cantregulatetheiremotionsanddontcareabout
othersfeelings(nobullying).
Insomecasesapersonmaybully[others]becausethereisan
aspectofapersonspersonalitythattheydontunderstandordontagreewith.Theymayalso
haveaprejudiceagainstapersonsrace,religion,or
sexualorientation
.Inmanyinstancesthey
mayeventhinkthattargetingapersonwhomtheyseeasexudingwrongbehaviorasagood
thing(nobullying).Bullies
projecttheirissueswiththemselvesonothers.Thesefactors
contributetowhythebullycausespainanddamagetoothers.
Bullyingcanaffecteveryonethosebeingbullied,thosewhobully,andthosewho
witnessbullying.[Students]whoarebulliedcanexperiencenegativephysical...andmental
healthissues.Morelikelytoexperiencedepressionandanxiety,increasedfeelingsofsadness
andloneliness,changesinsleepandeatingpatterns,andlossofinterestinactivitiestheyusedto
enjoy.Theseissuesmaypersistintoadulthood(nobullying).Bullyingcanalsoaffectdecreased
academicachievementGPAandstandardizedtestscoresandschoolparticipation.Students

ofallyouthaged11to1havebeenavictimorperpetratorofbullying(JournaloftheAmerican
MedicalAssociation).Manydreadthephysicalandverbalaggressionoftheirpeers,andmany
moreattendschoolinachronicstateofanxietyanddepression(americanspcc).
[Bullying]can
beincreasedfurtherwhen[they]arenotsupportedbyparents,peers,andschools.Bullyingcan
makeanunsupportivesituationworse(stopbullying).Bullyingisseriousbecausemostlikely
theeffectofbullyingcanincreaseariskofthevictimtoharmthemselves,orothers.
Bullyinghappensbecausethebullytakesouttheirfeelingsamongothersandtheeffects
ofitcanbecrucial.Bullyingcomesinmanydifferentwaysandinmanydegrees,buttheyreall
repeatedverbal,physicaland/orsocialbehaviorthatcausesphysicaland/orpsychologicalharm.
Nomattertheextentofthebullying,causesofitindicatetheonedoingthebullyingisntstable
themselves,andtheeffectsofthatbullyputtingtheirpainontosomeoneelse,causessevere
consequences.
