Addressing normalized
hate

Understanding the Issue

Transgender discrimination in todays society is so
normalized that its virtually invisible to the
straight world.
Not only are these problems not addressed, they are
taught to be normal through desensitizing youth.
People commonly show this hatred openly.
From silencing, to legalized murder, to stereotyping,
to invalidating, to slandering, to belittling the
concept to nothing more than a joke there is a silent
war on transgenderism.

Five Faces
Transgenderism is heavily impacted by all
five faces of oppression:
Marginalization
Culture of Silence
Violence
Cultural imperialism
Exploitation
The purposes of this research project are
to:
Educate the public on the struggles
that members of the transgender
community have to live with everyday.
To cover the ongoing war of ignorance
and hate.
To offer a different perspective from
whats typically see in the media.

General Statistics
First, a look at the hard facts and statistics:
50% experience harassment or discrimination at work.

Transgender teen suicide attempt rates have risen to

50%.
19% of respondents said they had suffered domestic
abuse because of their gender nonconformity.

that I personally surveyed in our community,

they are disgusting, 13% believe they
have basic human rights, and 7% beleive they
slaughtered in the streets.

Transgender stereotypes
Transgender people have had a history of being stereotyped
by both everyday society as well as the media, the latter
being much more notable.
The biggest stereotypes include the mentally ill hopeless
trans girl, the deceitful trashy hooker, and the villain.
The hopeless trans girl character is traditionally a
victim. They're typically mentally ill, they're typically
obviously transgender, and they're typically for comedic
relief.

Transgender Stereotype (cont.)

The deceitful trans woman is a
stereotype that is portrayed as a
liar, a crook, and an all around
immoral person. Those who refuse to
associate with,or down right
discriminate against the transgender
character is seen as morally superior
The transgender villain (often the
only transgender character in the
show) is portrayed as deceitful,
tricky, sultry, and unjustly mean,
and those who ally with or love them
are seen as abusive and perverted.

Personal Discrimination
Personal discrimination
is separate from all
other types of
discrimination in that
its experienced by all
peoples.
It exist in levels that
vary from mild to
severe
It encompasses
everything from slurs
to direct violence.

The personal discrimination experienced
by transgender individuals
is on a highly severe level to
where violence is typical and
harassment is expected.

Personal Stories
Lynn Conway underwent sex-reassignment surgery in
1968 and was fired by IBM for being transsexual. Before
her termination, Conway had invented a method by which
computer processors make multiple calculations
simultaneously and dynamically, which consequently led
to the creation of supercomputers that can take enormous
amounts of data and compile them
to look for patterns.

Contradictions of Hate
These are some contradictions to some of the reasons people give for their
open discrimination:
For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are
eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who
have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let
the one who is able to receive this receive it. -Matthew 19:12
Eunuch is a similar concept to a transgender person. It very plainly states
that eunuchs (transgender people) are accepted by christian god.
Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a
disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For
her hair is given to her for a covering. -Corinthians 11:14-15
Though there are some scripts that are a bit less understanding. This gives
a little reason, but remember to consider the bible also says not to wear
mixed cloth, so the mass majority of people in the modern world are indeed
sinning.

Contradictions of Hate cont.

Many states are trying to reverse
what the Equality Act of 1963 did
for trans individuals. One
instance is making it illegal for
trans people to use the restroom
they want. The contradiction of
this proposition is that, while
people are proposing it to reduce
rape in the women's restroom
(something not caused by
transgender people), who will stop
violence in the men's?

This is the man

The even larger contradiction lying in

this misguided and ultimately miseducated
crusade to rid transgender people from
their prefered bathrooms is that a
transgender person has never been shown
to have initiated an act of assault in
the bathroom. In fact, they are likely to
be assaulted themselves. Not only is this
fear misplaced, its ignorant.

Call to Action
After viewing all the data Ive presented, I invite you
to be critical of your and others actions in the future.
I am not asking you to compromise your beliefs. I am
simply asking you to consider the pain these people
experience daily. To understand the underlying
transphobia in our modern society and to try to at least
Do your part to help end it.

Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed, learned, and understood
the data presented in this presentation, and
I hope you can help end some of the
discrimination in our community. Ask
yourself, is it so hard to treat these people
like people? Our next step is to continue to
monitor the communitys progress in its fight
for equality.
