TherearethreeleadingcausesofcarcrashesinNorth
America,#3drunkdriving,#2speedingand#1
distracteddriving,allthreeverypopularconcepts.
Drivingundertheinfluenceisseenasanextremely
dangerousthingandyetitisnumberthreeinthe
previouslist.SowhatdoesthatsayaboutDistracted
Driving.
Iam15,mybirthdayisinNovember,Iamplanningon
attemptingatmylicenseassoonasIamable.Likeso
manypeoplebeforemeIameagertodrive.Butmy
excitementisonlyfromlookingatthepositivesofdriving
like,IcanleavethehousewithoutarideorIwon'thave
totakethebusanymore,butthenegativesideisalot
lessexciting.Iwillbeonemorecarontheroad,andthat
meansthataccidentsarejustthatmoreprone.NowI
knowthatmyfriendsoftheseniorgenerationliketo
blameusyoungkidsforallofthesecarcrashes,which
isnotentirelytrue.About5,560olderadultswerekilled
indistracteddrivingrelatedaccidentsin2012,and
average3000teensdieannuallyfromtextingand
driving.Idon'tknowifit'sjustmebutthatnumberisway
tohigh.Sothatleadsmetothisquestion,canwe
successfullypreventdistracteddriving.

Inthelast6years,10outof13provinceshave
reinforcedthelawsondistracteddriving,Albertahasa
fineof$287and3demarets,Ontariohasafineof
$1000and3demaretandPEIwithupto$1200infines
and5demarets.PersonallyIwouldbeafraidtoowna
phoneinPEI.Allprovinceshaveafineofatleast$150
and3demarets,withthenotableexceptionofNunavut
witha$0fineand0demarets.Provincialgovernments
arejuststartingtorecognisedistracteddriving,notthat
itwasn'taproblembefore,butbetween2002and2011
therehasbeena39%increaseinaccidentsdueto
inattentiveanddistracteddriving.InSeptemberof2011
distracteddrivingbecameaticketableoffencein
Alberta,thislastJanuaryoffendingdriverswillnow
receive3demarets.Soisthisallworking,isabigfine
scaringpeopleintokeepingtheireyesontheroadone
articleinanOttawanewspapersaysthattheselaws
maycausemorecarcrashes,becauseifpeoplehaveto
hidetheirphonesthentheyareevenmoredistracted
thantheywouldbeifthecouldtextorcallfreely.Ithas
beenlessthan2monthssincethelawhasbeen
enhancedinAlbertasoitistoosoontoseehow
effectiveitis,but3demaretsisalotespeciallyforone
textmessage.

isgoingtobeabletogethislicence,myteamandIare
dedicatedtomakingsurethatwon'thappen.Humans,in
allthethingsthatwecandowehaveourfaults,

debatablythemostsubstantialofwhichisourslow
reactiontime,incomparisontothespeedoftheworld
aroundus.Theaveragetimeittakesustoreactto
somethingisaquarterofaseconds,ifyouaredriving
downaroadat80km/hthatmeansinaquarterofa
secondyouaretraveling5metersitdoesn'tmatterhow
fastyoustopyoumightnothavetheroom.Theideaofa
selfdrivingcaristoeliminatethechanceofhuman
error,faultydrivingandyesdistracteddriving.Youcan
sitbackinyoulittlecarpunchinwhereyouwanttogo
andtakeanapifyouwant.Thesejetsonlikecarsare
designedtoseewhatyoucannot,reacthowyoucan
not,andtomakedrivingsafer.
Evenstillthiswon'tbeavailableforatleastafewmore
yearsandeventhenitmaybetooexpensiveformost,
sowhatcanwedonowhowcanwepreventdistracted
drivingnow.Therearealotoftechnological
advancementsdesignedfortocorrecthumanerror,for
thelastfewyearsmostofthemajorautomotive
companieshavedesignedbluetoothcallandtexting
systemsthatarehandsfreeandtheyconnectyoucell
phonetoyourvehicle,thereisalsosystemsthattellyou
ifavehicleisinyourblindspotandofcourseautomatic
brakesandcruisecontrol.Alltechnologicalvictoriesthat
havesavedlivesandbumpers,butasthedriverswhat
canwedocanwestoptextinganddrivingorwaituntil
westopsomewheretomakethatquickphonecall,it's
uptoyou.
