Poetry Analysis Assignment: I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
In the poem, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth, the creative effects
displayed throughout the literature can be traced back to the use of poetic devices such as
personification and imagery to create a such a meaningful and pleasant poem.
The use of personification along with imagery can be found throughout the stanzas of the
poem. For example, in the first stanza William writes A host, of golden daffodils; beside the
lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Which includes the use of both
poetic devices, personification and imagery, since daffodils cannot actually dance. The colorful
word choice the poet uses to describe the flowers such as golden and placing the flowers in a
beautiful setting. Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze, this
shows imagery being used to give the reader a clear image of the yellow daffodils swiftly
floating in the breeze on a summer day. Another example of the use of personification would be
when the poem includes from the second and third stanza that the stars that shineOut-did the
sparkling waves in glee giving the stars the human emotion of glee in the sentence. The use of
imagery can also be found in the same quote when the poet states that the stars that shine And
twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay:
creating an image filled with a poet along the bay staring into the night sky, staring into the stars
of the milky way, as they stretch along the bay in a never-ending line. The very images give a
peaceful and pleasant outlook on life through the poem.
The thought process of this poet, revealed through his tools of poetic devices, clearly
shows that the poem has some kind of deep meaning to him and is revealing that he is pensive
over his life and while doing so he has been alone on his journey through life but still continues

to move on, beyond the never-ending line of the stars in the milky way that goes the margin of
the bay. which is why he looks towards the stars in the night sky. its because hes still moving on
through his solitude in which he finds peace and beautiful. Which is described through his eyes
as seeing the golden daffodils..Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. high over the vales and
hills.
This beautiful and meaning poem, in which the poet expressed himself freely, was thanks
to his understanding of various poetic devices, which included personification and imagery, used
to help display his poem in a elegant and thoughtful way.
