B-2-1 Demonstrate ability to apply critical thinking and clinical judgment in the
planning of care.
Describe ONE significant learning experience in this course related to the CLPNA
competency. Provide an example.
One significant learning experience that enabled me to apply critical thinking and
clinical judgment was performing 10 rights of the client about their medications. For
instance, during lab practice, I have to administer insulin subcutaneously. However, the
client suddenly asked where I would inject it. Because of the 10 rights, I knew that, as a
nurse, I had to know more about the medication I am administering than just its name.
Therefore, upon being asked, I competently provided a client teaching derived from
critical thinking that performing injection on the upper arms, which are hard to reach for
the client especially who self-medicate themselves, increases the rotation sites for clients,
which reduce risks of lipohypertrophy.
Describe what you learned and how it relates to the competency. Explain why it was
meaningful.
Because of the 10 rights, I learned the importance of understanding the
medication I am giving. It is not only for accuracy of administration, as a nurse, it creates
a chance for more learning in the sense that varying medications have varying techniques
of coping that have to vary with peoples circumstances. There are innumerable
scenarios, but I learned that performing 10 rights could relevantly increase present
nursing care.
Use the Proficiency Categories to rate proficiency in the chosen CLPNA competency.
Explain what was done to achieve the competency.
Good: understands competency in theory and in scenarios and nursing practice.
To achieve this proficiency, I have attended my theory class and rarely came in
late. I also reviewed class notes prior to scenarios, as well as watched the related skills to
be performed more than twice.
Describe how you will apply this learning in your current and future nursing care.
As I have done during practice scenarios, I will make sure that I performed 10
rights, not only for client safety but also to maintain my competency as nurse. To do this, the 3
checks of the right patient, right dose, right medication, right time and frequency, and right route
must be performed prior to drug medication. As for the remaining rights, if unsure, then proper
research about the medications therapeutic and adverse effects, its safe dosage, and its onset,
peak and duration must be known prior to administration.
