Creative Writing

Essential Question
How can creative writing be
beneficial to education and how can
we incorporate it more in the school
system?

Short Activity
I have cut words and phrases for you.
You have two minutes to create either a very short
story or a very short poem out of it as a group.

What? Why?
This activity is a well known writing technique known from David Bowie
himself.
He used this on many of his songs, hence why the lyrics are nonsense at
times.

Question for YOU

How often do you read/write poetry, short stories, or any form of
creative writing?

Some Data
NEA FOUND
In 2008, just 8.3 percent of adults had read any poetry in the
preceding 12 months. That figure was 12.1 percent in 2002, and in 1992,
it was 17.1 percent, meaning the number of people reading poetry has
decreased by approximately half over the past 16 years (Newsweek
Staff, 2).

Newsweek Staff. "Poetry Readership at 16 Year Low; Is Verse Dying?" Newsweek. Newsweek LLC, 24 Mar. 2009. Web. 10 Oct. 2015.

So What?
If adults dont interact with creative writing, how should anyone expect
their children or their students to?

Speaking of Students
Common Core Standards does not specify poetry and creative writing as
a significant part of a students education.

BUT poetry has been proven to strengthen students critical thinking

skills, provide a safe space for artistic expression in the classroom, and
is a strong social emotional learning method.

Author Ben Curran Proposes

Instead of using Common Core Standards by the word, teachers can alter
curriculum without hurting anyone.
Maybe when a standard under Reading Comprehension persay states
Students must be able to read text and comprehend it they can use
poetry or a short story as the text instead of some plain article.

What else could be done?

If classrooms simply do not have time to write or read poetry and short
stories, there can always be other things done outside of the classroom.

Electives, too!
My Senior Coach and I thought of creating a Creative Writing class this
year, and so far it has been a success.

We also have been recently working on a small Literary Magazine to

provide for the school.
