J5

TO LAUNCH 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY TOUR

Popular 90s hip hop crew, Jurassic 5, will be making their final comeback tour in
Australia this 2015/16. All 5 members, vocalists Chali, Akil, Zakir and disc jockeys DJ
Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist will be making public appearances in December throughout
Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to promote their latest album, Quality Control the first
album J5 have produced in a decade. The group have had enormous success throughout their
quarter century career, with the release of their first album in the late nineties cementing their position in the
1990s alternative hip hop movement.
All five members of the J5 crew grew up together as teenagers in Los Angeles, California during the 1980s. At the
tender old ages of 16 and 17, the boys acknowledged their mutual love and passion for hip hop and producing
beats. By 1995 they had formed their group, J5, and created their first EP album Jurassic in 1997. The well
renowned Concrete Schoolyard was the most popular track to come from the EP, maintaining the number 1 spot
on the Billboard single charts for 15 weeks.
Following the success of Jurassic, the boys then came out with their next production Power in Numbers in 2000.
The album was another huge success, securing a top 10 spot on the Billboard album charts for 10 weeks and
making over 450,000 in record sales this was a huge feat for artists involved in the underground hip hop genre.
A few years later in 2003 they dropped another album Feedback, which featured the track Freedom that
maintained the number one position on the Billboard single charts for 7 weeks. Their increasingly popular music
and demanding fan base helped J5 solidify a spot on stage at the Glastonbury Festival, England in 2004, as well as
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, California in the same year. These two festivals gave J5 enormous
coverage due to their stellar performances gaining rave reviews.
A year later in 2005 J5 released Whats Golden, which was the last album they would produce before the group
would go their separate ways. After a busy decade of album production, festival performances and numerous
concerts, J5 decided to go their separate ways. Zakir, Akil and Nu-Mark could no longer commit to touring and
studio time, whereas Cut Chemist and Chali decided to pursue solo careers.
The boys had such a successful run, but they also had families and other commitments to attend to. Unfortunate as it
was, I knew it wouldnt be the last we would see of J5, their manager Tyson Matthews said.
The release of J5s latest record Quality Control marks ten years since their last production. This tour will be the
first time J5 have been on Australian soil. With the help of our sponsors Beat Magazine and Channel V, the crew
will be back to the country in October 2016 to perform at Festival Hall, Melbourne, the Enmore Theatre, Sydney,
and the Tivoli, Brisbane.
We are ecstatic to be stepping out on stage again after all these years, but we are especially excited to be rocking out
with our Australian fans, Chali said.
J5s unique harmonies and dynamic stage presence are not to be missed. Tickets go on sale through Ticketmaster
on the 1st of March, 2016. Be sure to secure a place at one of the shows; this is an opportunity not to be missed.
