I wish there had been a middle ground for some of these questions. I have not interacted with her enough to be able to

answer some of these questions confidently. So it may seem as though I am conflicted. I am confident that I
completely enjoy teaching here at Oasis and welcome change. On the other hand, I am not very clear on what that
change is or the direction for our school at this moment.

For the first time in my many years of teaching I am feeling confused and incompetent, like what I have been doing is

1/27/2016 6:04 PM

just not good enough. I am not sure what Mrs. Treece's vision is for our school. It feels like she plans to drive good
teachers away so that she can replace them with teachers from the school she came from. While I do not know the
reason that one of our teachers was let go, I do know that it doesn't bode well that the new teacher is a teacher from
her previous school in Kentucky. The morale at the high school is at an all-time low. Mrs. Treece has managed to
divide our staff by holding the core teacher to different standards than the elective teachers, and specifically targeting
and bullying certain teachers. She wants to build a technology building, a maker-space, but we are still struggling to
get some materials. Every principal I have worked for has always encouraged me to be the expert in my classroom.
Mrs. Treece micromanages us by commenting on, and having us change our lesson plans (because she doesn't think
they are good enough) to requiring us to turn in assessments before we give them so that she can comment on them
and have us make changes, as she sees fit. Mrs. Treece sets big expectations for us and when we don't understand
she shows us a video or sends us an article. She has sent us so many different videos/articles on different aspects of
teaching and I'm completely overwhelmed. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing. The rigor of our content and
programs has decreased based on the fact that we can't give zeros for homework and we have to give our students
multiple chances to improve their grades. While I agree that students need to master the standards, I also think they
need to be held accountable for turning in work on time and studying when they need to. There have been several
students who have commented that they just didn't study because they know they will be able to retake the test. As a
parent of a child in the charter school system, this is not the message I would want my child to receive. I am
astonished an saddened at how many teachers we have lost this year. The teachers who left were excellent teachers
who left their mark on the graduates of Oasis High School. The atmosphere at the school is not like it used to be. We
were told at the beginning of the year that using the bathroom and eating were adult issues and if we had to go without
doing either we would need to get over it. Each department at the high school is involved in a PLC. While the idea of
this is good, I feel like we are wasting time with the way that it is being done. Teachers do not teach the same
students within each department so discussing "problem" students at these meetings is not beneficial. As good
teachers we are constantly discussing students with one another and getting advice as to the best ways to meet those
students' needs. We don't need a formal group to do this and it actually works better not being in a formal group. The
students are starting to ask questions as to why so many teachers have left and constantly ask the remaining teachers,
"Are you leaving too?" This is not something they should be concerned with. They should feel comfortable in their
school environment. While this year has been really difficult, I am not giving up on Oasis High School. We have
wonderful students and I really enjoy my classes. That is what really matters! As a teacher I am constantly assessing
my students and changing my plans to meet their needs. I do feel like I do what is best for my students, but as I stated
previously, I'm constantly second-guessing my abilities because of the overwhelming amount of information thrown at
us, sometimes contradictory ideas. For the first time in my career I feel like my job is in jeopardy, not because I'm a
poor teacher, but because I am not doing things the way she wants, and meeting her, sometimes unattainable,
standards. I want the best for Oasis High School!

As a person that has been here several years I can tell you that the "old" guard has been complaining about

1/27/2016 8:29 AM

everything since Chris T. left. They clearly do not like the idea of being held accountable. I actually liked Ms. Lunger
and I really like Mrs. Treece because they do not take any crap. Mr. Stephenson please keep supporting her. Also,
thank you for working for us I have watched the board meetings and I can see that you clearly have our best interest at
heart. It is refreshing!

Failure to properly appreciate the current skill set / level of training / willingness to change / workload of the current

1/26/2016 6:10 PM

teaching staff put the principal in a bad situation at the start of the year. Some relationships were damaged at this
time, and may or may not heal. While she is very supportive of me personally, she has a rough relationship with other
teachers. Things that are said (I believe) with the intention of being helpful or encouraging are seen as heavy handed
criticism. Teachers are concerned that in the effort to "do what is needed" for the students, the needs of the teachers
are being ignored.
5

I think Mrs. Treece has been a great addition to OHS. She has innovative ideas to support teachers and improve

1/26/2016 5:30 PM

collaboration amongst staff. She has given students at the school a voice, which they never had before and they truly
value. Her energy and enthusiasm is contagious. Her vision for the school is inspiring.
6

Principal makes staff feel negative about their jobs. Principal makes students voices more important than teachers.
Principal tells teachers that they are wrong in creation of their assessments even when the materials are created by
the state and government 'educational' organizations. Principal makes teachers feel unsafe, like their jobs are
threatened if we fail to meet her goals. Principal forces long meeting on teachers after hours.

1/26/2016 3:50 PM

that the principal's dedication to student success is obvious to anyone who cares to see it. Still, I have concerns more about the school itself as a mirror of the principal's vision. At this point over half of a dozen staff members have
left OHS, and the school year is only midway through. OHS is regarded as one of the "crown jewels" of Lee County - a
place where both students and teachers want to be - yet the word on the street is that people are wondering what new
developments are causing teachers to leave. I have no desire to leave OHS myself (at least, not at this point), but it's
important to me to remain surrounded by quality educators, primarily because I have a daughter who may be
attending the school in the next few years.
8

The only variable that has changed from last year to this year has been the principal. She has forced many great

1/26/2016 2:56 PM

teachers to leave and I am afraid many others are ready to leave as well. Her agenda is unrealistic and given without
any direction or follow through. Please open your eyes to what is happening!!!!
9

Although I like the principal as a person, I feel that she is an EXTREMELY BAD FIT for Oasis high school. It is not an

1/26/2016 2:38 PM

understatement to say that she has decimated staff moral. Working here had been a complete joy; a fabulous example
of nurturing and developing critical thinkers, cultivated by Lee and Chris and all of us that have been around since the
beginning. In half a school year, this one principal has literally 'undone' what is (was) the base of this institution.
Shannon Treece truly has a deep love of learning and education. She is an idealist and visionary who really can 'see'
what teaching and learning might look like in the future. However, Shannon has a huge amount to learn about
leadership and working WITH her staff to help them develop. Sending the staff mountains of links to various
educational websites is NOT leadership. Starting her tenure here by having meetings with the students, but never the
teachers, is NOT leadership. Having five administrative personnel fire a teacher and pack all of her belongings
minutes after the bell rings is NOT leadership. Nor is failing to inform your staff (or what's left of it) about the constant
teaching revolving door that has permeated this building. Personally, I have been approached by parents, students,
residents, and curious Lee county teachers - asking the same 'whispered' question, "What the hell is going on at
Oasis"? I've not only endured watching FABULOUS TEACHERS - RARE GIFTED MASTERS walk out of this building
in resignation because they can't in good faith teach and practice the craft so highly looked upon by the people who
founded this very school, but I have to field pointed demanding questions from the public as I try to enjoy the art
festival or the Veteran's Day Parade. The word is out and spreading - "Why is this school bleeding teachers?" We've
lost many loyal Shark teachers. If things don't change drastically, I fear many more will jump ship.
10

Mrs. Treece is the total package when it comes to being a principal, and has done an absolutely remarkable job in the

1/26/2016 2:14 PM

face of blatant disrespect and disloyalty. There is a core group of teachers that should have been terminated after the
1st quarter; there is an ongoing active movement to undercut her authority and vision for OHS, and I find their actions
reprehensible and in direct contravention to our mission here to help students succeed. I'd appreciate the
Administrator stepping in and putting an end to this nonsense immediately.
11

In all of the years that I have worked at this school, I have never been so demoralized and felt less valued that I do
now. That apparently is the feeling of a great deal of the staff, several who have chosen to leave in the middle of the
year, to seek better opportunities at other locations, even taking pay cuts to do escape the disrespect with which
teachers here are treated. Several others are valiantly trying to make it to the end of the year, for the sake of their
students, planning on moving on at the end of the year. One had to question why, when we have never had such
turnover before, that so many have chosen to leave. From day one, the assumption was made that we, the teachers,
were incompetent, and needed to change. Even if that were the case, which evidence (namely the fact that we
consistently rank as one of the top schools in the district) refutes, one would hope that this would be carried out in a
caring manner, not "if you don't like it then leave"; This advice is apparently being heeded to the detriment of our
school, and system (if there is no quality high school for students to attend, completing their education within our
system, then how many will choose not to come here; how many high school students plan on returning, now that their
favorite, high quality teachers have left/plan to leave?). The fear is now additionally spreading that we will slowly be
replaced, with no warning, by teachers from our former principal's school, as recently happened in the math
department. On Thursday, a teacher was fired, to suddenly be replaced by a teacher, coincidentally from the same
school in Kentucky that the principal came from, amazingly moving down, and being processed in time to start school
today! (And the students shared his mugshot and DUI record, questioning why another teacher was let go for the
same reason). Not only does this practice appear to be highly unethical (and opening us up to a lawsuit), but makes
one wonder who might be replaced next? There have been numerous attempts by staff members to speak with the
principal, in order to bring about change and restore the formerly positive, collegial attitude that once pervaded the
school, only to be rebuffed or totally ignored with the "my way or the highway" attitude. Finally, the change that has
been demanded, and attempted by many, only to be met with confusion, is redirected to videos or articles so that we
can understand what we are to do. In my mind, if that is how I taught my class, simply telling students who did not
understand my expectation or instructions to "read this" or "watch this video", my teaching practices would be called
into question...so why is this acceptable practice for a school principal? I appreciate your accepting feedback from the
staff and desperately hope positive change will come, but am quickly losing hope, and plan, unless change happens,
to be one of those to seek alternate employment at the end of the year.
