Chapter 1 and 2:

In the first chapter of The Great Gatsby, the color I found most interesting is white. I get the
feeling of white through innocence and opportunity. An example of this is when Fitzgerald
writes, The windows were ajar and gleaming white (Fitzgerald 13). The door opens gleaming
white to show that opportunity awaits. Another great example of white in this chapter is, "our
white girlhood was passed together there (Fitzgerald 24)." This quote mentions girlhood, going
back to the idea of innocence.
In the second chapter of The Great Gatsby, the color I found most interesting is gray. Grey
represents smoke and filth of the lower class. A striking example of this is, "the ash-gray men
swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud, which screens obscure
operations from your sight (Fitzgerald 26)." This quote shows how harsh the conditions are in the
lower class. People are living in filth while people like Gatsby are living the high life. One last
example of the gray is, "above the gray land and spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over
it (Fitzgerald 26). This quote reinforces the last one, talking about how the land's codition is.
Chapter 3:
In the third chapter of The Great Gatsby, the color I found is gold. In this chapter, gold
represents wealth and greed. One example of greed is, bewitched to a dark gold (Fitzgerald
41). The quote is depicting gold as having hypnotic qualities and hypnotizing greedy qualities.
Wealth is shown in the quote, Jordans slender golden arm resting in mine (Fitzgerald 47).
Though the wealth is not literal in this quote, I believe that his golden arm symbolizes his
money and wealth.
Chapter 4:
In the fourth chapter of The Great Gatsby, I found red expressed strongly. The red represents
Gatsbys desire to be near his love, Daisy. The red is expressed in the quote. reach me a rose
(Fitzgerald 61). Roses usually symbolize love, so that makes this quote stronger. The second
quote I found in this chapter pertaining to red is, we passed Port Roosevelt where there was a
glimpse of red-belted ocean going ships (Fitzgerald 73). This quote talks about red following
Gatsby, always reminding him of his love.
Chapter 5 & 6:
The color I found expressed in chapters five and six is green and it symbolizes the regrowth and
rebirth of Gatsbys and Daisys love. There is also mention of Gatsby getting closer to the the
green light. The quote, you always have a green light that burns every night at the end of your
dock (Fitzgerald 92), shows how green is an important color in these chapters and it also talks
about the green light coming back into the picture. The second green I found was, at two o
clock a greenhouse arrived from Gatsbys, with innumerable receptacles to contain. (Fitzgerald
90). This quote is a stretch it gets the thought of green into your mind, subconsciously letting
you know what is going on.

Chapter 7:
The color that strongly resonates in this chapter is silver. The silver symbolizes the glamour and
sleekness of living as Gatsby does. A great example of silver used in the chapter is, Daisy and
Jordan lay upon an enormous couch like silver idols (Fitzgerald 115). The use of silver not only
shows how wealthy they are but reminds you of the time. The twenties and thirties were a very
sleek, art deco period and the text of Gatsby resonates this theme throughout. Another symbolic
meaning of silver is shown in the quote, a silver curve of the moon hovered already in the
western sky (Fitzgerald 114). This last quote shows the sleek style emanating throughout New
York all the way up from the sky.
Chapter 8:
The color I found in chapter eight is blue. The blue represents the sadness Gatsby feels as he
realizes Daisy doesnt love him anymore and therefore not trusting him. A great example of blue
is used in the quote, the ghostly birds began to sing among the blue leaves (Fitzgerald 152).
This quote is quite sad because birds are usually seen as brining people happiness and in turn,
being happy. Knowing how birds are, makes the thought of the birds being sad and blue all the
more powerful. One last example is, with little ripples that were hardly the shadows of waves
(Fitzgerald 162). Though blue isnt mentioned, people associate blue with water. Water is also
seen as a happy place where people have fun and this quote shows water being dark and dreary.
Chapter 9:
The color in chapter nine isnt really a color, its more transparent than and actual color. This
chapter shows Nick seeing the world bleak and colorless without Gatsby. The best example of a
colorless feeling I found in this chapter is, crouching over a sullen, overhanging sky and a
lusterless moon (Fitzgerald 178). This quote is bleak, grey, and sad. It shows how dreary and
empty Nicks life is like without Gatsby. Another example of there being no color is the quote,
there were hardly any lights except the shadowy, moving glow of a ferryboat across the sound
(Fitzgerald 173)." Transparent can be linked to emptiness and the picture from this quote is one
of emptiness and despair due to there being no color.
