Presentation
The creation of new conservation units and the effective implementation of
those already in existence have been the main focus of the biodiversity
preservation policy carried out by the State Institute of Environment (Inea),
through its Biodiversity and Protected Areas Board (Dibap). This entire
endeavor aims, among other objectives, to share the unique experience of
visiting and exploring the state's protected areas.
Wonderful natural resources are found in our conservation units. The
guidebook series State Park Trails offers the public a way to discover and
explore these areas. To start the series, we chose the Desengano State Park
Trailsguidebook, since this is the oldest, and yet the least known of our parks.
This publication is an invitation for you to visit the park and its trails. When you
arrive, besides enjoying all these natural resources, you will discover the
importance of preserving this wonderful environmental heritage.
Enjoy your hike!

Prefcio
paisagens serranas mais bonitas do estado, as quais, no entanto, so
Alm disso, a prtica
caadores, palmiteiros, desmatadores cuja atuao naturalmente
serem flagrados e denunciados.
Foreword
Due to striking mountains and the extraordinary wealth of its forests, a
mountain range named Serra do Desengano located in Rio de Janeiro's
northwest corner became the first state park of Rio de Janeiro in 1970. Its
22,400 hectares (55,350 acres) spread through the cities of Santa Maria
Madalena, Campos dos Goytacazes, and So Fidlis, shelter some of the most
beautiful mountain sceneries in the state. These, however, are practically
unknown to the general public and even to experienced hikers.
To fill this unjustifiable void, the State Institute of Environment (Inea) requested
the preparation of the first local trail guide, which includes trails located within
the park and in its immediate surroundings. The goal is to draw more visitors to
enjoy the area's exceptionally beautiful natural features, such as swimholes,
waterfalls, and rocky ridges with stupendous views reaching all the way to the
lowlands of Campos dos Goytacazes. Hence, the Desengano State Park will
finally be able to properly provide one of the social functions of any park: the
opportunity for recreational use. This should contribute to the sustainable
economic development of an entire region that has been neglected by tour
operators.
It is a mistake to think that promoting park visits contributes to its deterioration.
We strongly believe in the principle that the more people visit our state parks,
respecting the environmental standards in effect, the more defenders of our
fauna, flora, ecosystems, and notable landscapes there are. Besides,
experience has shown that large natural areas closed to the public facilitates
the illegal entry of the real destroyers of the environment hunters, wild heart of
palm pickers, deforesters. Their activities are naturally curtailed in places
where there is a regular traffic of visitors, as they are afraid of being caught out
and reported on.
To prepare the Desengano State Park Trails guidebook, Inea invited the Terra
Brasil Institute, a respected institution with successful experiences, such as
the Guia de Trilhas do Parque Nacional da Tijuca (Tijuca National Park Trails
Guidebook), currently a reference for those wanting to explore the trails in one
of the most known and visited national parks in Brazil, located in the city of Rio
de Janeiro.
This time, however, the challenge is much bigger. After all, in the Tijuca National
Park, the work consisted of mapping and presenting in a clear and concise
manner in a printed guidebook well-defined trails that receive a regular flow of
visitors and that have been well-known to the Mountain Clubs of Rio de
Janeiro for decades. In the case of Desengano, barring a few exceptions, the
trails received very few visitors and had to be almost entirely rebuilt.
For this hard task, we had the support of one of the most experienced groups
in this field in the country. The group is associated with the almost centenarian
Brazilian Excursionist Center (Centro Excursionista Brasileiro) the first
Mountain Club in Latin America. Putting this work together was in itself an
adventure, humorously registered in a making-of presentation at the end of this
book. Furthermore, the project included an update to the park's cartographic
map, GPS mapping of its main trails, and the creation of an image database for
future use by Inea.
The involvement of the local population and of the Mayor's Office of Santa
Maria Madalena, the city where the park's headquarters is located, was very
important. Besides offering all their support for the preparation of the
guidebook, the Mayor's Office also suggested the inclusion of some short
trails located outside this conservation unit that have great local appeal and
are potentially attractive to visitors as well. This contributed for a more
comprehensive work. Therefore, our intention is that Desengano State Park
become a true vector for regional development, inspiring the creation of more
and better jobs than those provided by other rural land's traditional activities,
such as cattle raising and agriculture, always harder and less profitable in
areas with jagged mountainous terrain such as the Desengano Massif.
Finally, it should be noted that this publication would not have been possible
without the generous financial aid of Anglo American and of LLX a company
of the EBX Group. Both companies are in the mining industry, were recently
established in the region, and believe in the importance of our project to
promote the environmentally conscious visit to one of our most important
environmental conservation units.
We hope that this guidebook achieves its purpose by attracting more visitors to
the three cities that are the gateways to Desengano State Park and increasing
the protection network of this virtual jewel of the Rio de Janeiro Atlantic Forest
by making the natural attractions here described better known.
Happy trails!

Desengano State Park is one of the most important natural treasures of Brazil.
It paradisiacal scenery, formed by rivers, waterfalls and trails in the middle of an
Atlantic Forest area that is practically untouched by man will enchant nature
lovers and make us feel responsible for its preservations. After all, we must
share this beauty with future generations.
LLX, an EBX Group Company, and Anglo American, and a transparent and
responsible conduct in the legal sphere, they clearly perceive the importance
of acting with environmental commitment and social development, along with
neighboring communities. From the Integrated Planning the involvement of
business, government and civil society become indispensable in building joint
solutions because of the magnitude of their enterprises, as Superport Au, in
So Joo da Barra (RJ).
This guide is part of a project focused on publicizing Desengano State Park,
and its purpose is to encourage visitation, so that the municipalities in its area
of influence invest in the hotel network and in tourism infrastructure. This action
proves that creating wealth and preserving the environment are not mutually
exclusive dimensions. Much to the contrary, they go hand in hand and
complement each other.
Finally, we would like to leave a message of recognition of the Inea Biodiversity
Board, for the excellent work they did in producing this material with the Terra
Brasil Institute. The quality of the graphics and the information contained in this
guide faithfully and accurately portray the exuberance of Desengano State
Park.

Created in 1970, the Desengano State Park is the oldest and the least known
conservation unit of the state. It is included in the category of full protection
conservation unitsand has 22,400 hectares (55,350 acres).
The park is managed by the State Institute of Environment Inea and consists
of a property for common use by the population. Its main purpose is the
preservation of the ecosystems and their ecological features, allowing different
uses of its land: environmental education, scientific research, and touristic
activities. Within its boundaries, springs are protected, fauna, flora, and the
ecological processes that form the ecosystems are conserved, thus ensuring
the preservation of its natural resources.
It is located in a region formerly known as Serra do Rio Preto (Rio Preto Range),
at the final slopes of the Serra do Mar mountain range, next to the Paraba do
Sul River. It remained unexplored until around 1913. It has exceptional natural
features and barely modified ecosystems, representing the last significant
Atlantic Forest forested area in the North of Rio de Janeiro state.
The Park is characterized by steep rock outcroppings. Its West-East ridgeline
holds altitudes ranging between 1,200 and 1,600m (3,900 and 5,250 ft), with
peaks reaching 1,800m (5,900 ft), representing an important area of
geological interest in the state. The Desengano Rock, with 1,761m (5,778 ft) of
altitude, the crests of the Serra Itacolomi and of Serra da Malhada Branca
mountain ranges with average altitudes of about 1,600m (5,250 ft), and the
So Mateus Peak in the Cinco Pontas group, at 1,580m (5,183 ft), are a few
highlights.
Due to its terrain and drainages systems, the park holds an excellent water
source that serves the populations of the North of Rio de Janeiro state. It offers
easy road access that ensures entrance to all economic tiers of society that
can enjoy its attractions.

Criao do parque
Park creation
The history of the park's creation begins with the establishment of the
Santa Maria Madalena State Forestas a priority area by Decree-Law no.
131, on October 24, 1969 (Government of Geremias de Matos Fontes). It
comprised all the existent forest remaining in the Serra do Rio Preto
mountain range, covering areas in Santa Maria Madalena, So Fidlis,
and Campos dos Goytacazes.
However, the area later earned the status of park with the publication of
Decree-Law no. 250, on April 13, 1970. Its first demarcation was set forth by
State Decree no. 14.871, on October 20, 1970, with an approximate area of 25
thousand hectares (62 thousand acres). In 1979, with State Decree no. 2.328,
on January 5, a new perimeter was established declaring it of public utility for
purposes of expropriation.

Flora
The characteristics of the rugged terrain and the influence of the peculiar
climate, due to the nearness of the ocean, enabled the development of a
vegetation with diverse shapes and formations. Typical of the Atlantic Forest
biome, the following are present in the Desengano State Park: Dense Rain
Forest, Seasonal Semi-Deciduous Forest, and Montane Shrublands.
The Dense Rain Forest, also called Atlantic Moist Forest, in its montane
formation, is found between the elevations of 500 and 1,500m (1,600 and
4,900 ft). The submontane formation, on the other hand, occupies an altitude
range between 50 and 500m (160 and 1,600 ft). More predominant and better
preserved in the Atlantic slope, it exhibits patches of vegetation starting at
200m (650 ft), especially at the Serra das Cinco Pontas mountain range and
the region of the Mocot River and the Sossego River, in Imb. The vegetation
offers a dominant stratum with a height of 25m (80 ft) and species such as
canela-santa (Vochysia laurifolia), baguau (Talauma organensis), jequitib
(Cariniana spp., Cariniana excelsa), and sweetwoods (Ocotea sp., Nectandra
sp.), among other species of the families Rubiaceae, Myrtaceae, and
Melastomataceae, along with the widespread presence of palms (heart of
palm, tucum), pteridophytes (several ferns and xaxim), bromeliads, and
orchids, and an enormous amount of other epiphytes and lianas.
The Seasonal Semi-deciduous Forest, in its montane and submontane
formations, is predominant in the environs of the park, especially on the
continental slope. Because of its geographic position, the barrier set by the
mountain chain isolated it, so the few remnants left are in places of difficult
access. Adapted to the climate differences, it displays loss of leaves, at times
due to lack of rain during the dry periods, at times due to temperature drop in
cold months. It is represented by typical species, such as tamboril
(Peltophorum dubium), garapa (Apuleia leiocarpa), caviuna (Dalbergia nigra);
pau-de-canzil (Platypodium elegans), louro-da-serra (Cordia trichotoma),
cinco-chagas (Sparattosperma leucanthum), old fustic (Maclura tinctoria),
cedar (Cedrela fissilis), Parapiptadenia sp. and Cordia sp., among others.
The Montane Shrublands are restricted to higher mountain ranges, isolated
plateaus, and steep slopes, appearring above 1,600m (5,250 ft). It is made up
of grassland and shrubland grasses, lichens, bryophytes, epiphytes,
bromeliads, and isolated bushes adapted to the dry and cold winter climate.

These are small communities of plants that live in shallow soil over rocks and
survive due to their close cooperation.
One can argue that Desengano State Park offers one of the most diverse and
best preserved Montane Shrublands in the state. Examples of its exuberant
flora can be seen at Desengano Rock and on the summit of the Serra Itacolomi,
Serra Pedra Marial, Serra da Malhada Branca, Serra Grande, and Serra das
Cinco Pontas mountain ranges.
There are endemic species occurring exclusively in the area of Desengano,
such as: Vernonia magdalenae, Senaea janeirensis, Tibouchina discolor,
Bradea brasiliensis, Pitcairnia encholirioides, Epidendrum chlorinum,
Oncidium magdalenense, Banisteriopsis magdalenensis, Behuria
huberioides, Pleiochiton magdalenense, Tibouchina magdalenensis,
Pleiochiton longipetiolatum, Magdalenaea limae, and Phymatidium limae.
Some can only be found in the Serra do Desengano range: Prepusa alata,
Vriesia farneyi, Behuria limae, Persea microphylla, Salvia magdalenensis, and
Lobelia santos-limae.
Despite the high level of deforested zones in the surroundings, the area is still
covered with natural forests and large reserves of hardwood, such as cedar,
jacaranda, leo-pardo, among others.

Fauna
[ 55 ]
Fauna
The large number of representatives of the fauna, including endemic and
threatened species, confers on the Desengano State Park the status of a
highly relevant region as to its biodiversity. It shelters the majority of the
species present in the Brazilian Southeast Atlantic Forest since it still has wellpreserved ecosystems. Due to its varying altitude and the presence of diverse
habitats, the region is home to large and medium-sized mammals as well as
extremely rare birds above 1,600m (5,250 ft), in the Montane Shrublands.
Of the 176 known mammal species in the State of Rio de Janeiro, 33 were
identified inside the park. Of these, 16 (that is, 48%) are endangered. The
following have been seen in the region: giant anteater (Myrmecophaga
tridactyla), red brocket (Mazama americana), maned three-toed sloth
(Bradypus torquatus) and felines, such as cougar (Puma concolor), oncilla
(Leopardus tigrinus), and oncelot (Leopardus pardalis).
The following primates can also be found: tufted capuchin monkey (Cebus
apella), brown howler or brown howling monkey (Alouatta fusca), and muriqui
or woolly spider monkey (Brachyteles arachnoides). The muriqui is the largest
primate of the Americas among the 35 endangered species. It was elected as
the park's symbol because of its charisma and potential for representing the
conservation of the Atlantic Forest's biodiversity.
The following species also inhabit the region: crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon
thous), several species of armadillos, such as the nine-banded armadillo
(Dasypus novemcinctus), paca (Agouti paca), coati (Nasua nasua), tayra (Eira

Geologia
[ 59 ]
Geology
The region of the Desengano State Park is on a rocky belt calledRibeira Belt,
which consists of an eroded part of the Serra do Mar mountain range. The
Brazilian Orogeny, an event caused by the collision of two tectonic plates
between 650 and 480 million years ago, caused the movement, rupture, and
rising of the rocky massifs adjacent to the lowlands of Campos dos
Goytacazes. Outcroppings that endured faults, fractures, and continuous
erosion are easily seen in the region by observing the appearance of
underlying rocks, such as granites and gneiss, resulting from magma
solidification.
The outcrop was formed under elevated pressures and temperatures and is
basically made up of four types of Precambrian rocks (over 550 million years
old). Among these types, three are intrusive magmatic (igneous) rocks with
gneissic texture: the Charnockite Bela Joana, concentrated on the East and
Atlantic slopes, along the alignment of the Serra Morumbeca, Serra das
Agulhas, Serra da Malhada Branca, Serra das Cinco Pontas, Mata Cavalo,
Almas, and Gaivota mountain ranges; the Porphyritic Granite Desengano
Rock, on the West Slope, in the Serra do Desengano and part of the Serra
Grande mountain ranges; the Leucogranite Serra Itacolomi, emerging on the
North Continental Slope, in the Serra Pedra Marial, Serra Itacolomi, and Serra
Barra Alegre mountain ranges. The other one is gneiss formed from ancient
sedimentary rocks, the Gneiss So Fidlis, which is associated with the
Leucogranite Serra Itacolomi. It emerges specifically on the Continental Slope
and on the Southwest edge, along part of the Serra da Rifa and Serra do
Maribondo ranges.
As of its geomorphologic aspect, it is a macro-unit of great relevance,
constituting the fifth geomorphologic domain called the Dissected Plateau of
Desengano.
[ 60 ]
The dynamic of these erosive processes (action of water flows, faults, fractures,
exfoliations, and gravity slides, creeps, and fall) causes the degradation and
the retreat of slopes and also affects the development of forest cover over time.
Therefore, geomorphic dynamics, with the action of erosive processes, is of
crucial importance in the formation and evolution of forests in humid montane
environments.
The Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro thought of creating thematic
cities and towns with the purpose of promoting economic and social
developments in interior towns of the state. The city of Santa Maria Madalena
received the title ofgeology towndue to the characteristics described above
and because it offers all the requisites to be the state forum for debates
regarding geology. Furthermore, a good portion of the Desengano State Park is
located within its territory.

Itacolomi, Malhada Branca e Desengano, ligando a face continental atlntica.

mountains and deep forested valleys, following banks and crossing rivers and
creeks, such as the Mocot, Bela Joana, Preto, Segundo-Norte, Morumbeca,
Aleluia, Imb, among others. Forest dwellers and farmers ensured the flow of
their production, especially coffee, by using the picadas (machete-opened
paths) and donkeys. These picadas were also used for transportation
between the rural centers and access to extraction sites.
With the aid of indigenous lore (sense of direction and geographic and
environmental knowledge), the pioneers were able to overcome the Serra do
Rio Preto (the prior name of the mountain ranges that now make up the
Desengano State Park) and its highest spurs, such as the Serra Grande,
Itacolomi, Malhada Branca, and Desengano mountain ranges, connecting the
continental to the Atlantic side.
Some of these tracks, historical
remembrances, were mapped and recovered. Historical trails, such as the one
connecting Itacolomi to Mocot, approach trails to certain natural attractions,
such as the numerous falls, swimholes, and observation peaks, will be
available to visitors in this guidebook.
As a result, hikers, researchers, and/or sportspeople can enjoy on foot this
fascinating scenery, wander about, leave their footprints, photograph, observe,
and closely interact, thus discovering the small and large wonders of this
beautiful region.

Some tourist support services are already offered in the region, such as
lodging in inns and hostels, food services, some adventure sports trail guiding,
as well as locally made crafts, handicraft and food.
Since these are unexplored sites with untouched natural resources, touristic
and sports activities must be performed through guided trails with care.Trails
are the main infrastructure for visitor management in areas with ecotouristic
appeal. Thus, hiking in established trails and hiring a local guide are
recommended.
In this lush scenery, visitors can choose among infinitude of trails and activities.
They can enjoy on foot the fascinating landscape, great scenic beauty terrain,
waterfalls, swimholes, as well as diversified fauna and flora.
It should be pointed out that it isn't always easy to hire a local guide or tour
guide for the trails and traverses. They are mostly dwellers and woodsman from
the region where the trail or traverse is located. Visitors must be prepared for
the possibility of not having this support. In this case, they must decide if they
have the proper condition, equipment, and information necessary to proceed
on their own.

This city, the closest urban area to the park, is surrounded by mountains
and at an altitude of 630m (2070 ft). It is located at a privileged spot as it is
skirted by the Desengano massif and by mountains in the surroundings,
such as the Dubois Rock. As if it were a natural amphitheater, the city
practically embraces the park on its west side. It is also where the Park
Administration Headquarters, the Visitor Center, the Horto Florestal Santos
Lima, and the Forest Fires Prevention Nucleus, all administered by Inea,
are located.
From Santa Maria Madalena, access to most of the trails and traverses is
on dirt roads. In case of rain and during the rainy season (September to
March) it can be very unsafe or even impassable, presenting risk even to
4X4 vehicles. During the dry season or if there is no rain, these roads are
accessible to vehicles without four-wheel drive.

All lengths, durations of the hikes (one way), and altitudes were calculated with
a GPS. Keep in mind that they are approximations.
The elevation gain is the sum of all uphill sections on the trail when hiking on the
direction described in the guidebook.
The duration of the hike expresses the amount of time needed on a one-way
trip. When backtracking the same trail, calculate the amount of time necessary
for that return and take into consideration that darkness arrives earlier in
forests. In traverse trails, carefully plan your return trip.
Orientation means how hard it is to find the route course, considering forks, trail
definition, vegetation growth, signs, etc.

frteis.
The Mine Trail is on the Morumbeca dos Marreiros region, also called Muribeca
by locals. This was where the Pury (indigenous tribe) sought refuge from the
atrocities perpetrated in other regions. Muribeca is a Tupi word and means
place of food, abundant place where the soil is fertile. The holes come from
mining exploitation near streams and creeks.

Indigenous people named this region after two rocks of rare scenic beauty.
These crests are embedded as laminations at altitudes over 1,600 meters (5,250
feet) in the impressive group of aligned granite rocks called the Leucogranite
Serra Itacolomi. In the Tupi-Guarani language, Itacolomy means stone boy (Ita =

boy who asked them not to destroy the local natural resources. Frightened, the
miners shot at the boy, who mysteriously turned into stone. Looking at the
mountain, you see two rocks close to each other: one is the mother stone and
the smaller, thechild / boy stone.

Start at the gate to the Fazenda Babilnia next to the fig tree. Follow parallel to
the Morumbeca Creek and cross the Sampainho River to two smaller gates.
Take the left gate to a canebrake. Immediately after the canebrake, next to a

mata at chegar a uma grande piscina natural.
From the canebrake on the dirt road, keep going on the road until right before

to the waterfall and the swimhole is to the right of the road (looking uphill), on a
meadow with small rock formations. Cross a fence. The trail to the waterfall starts
soon after this fence, in the woods on the left.To reach Bonito Pool, just above the
waterfall, hike up the meadow bordering the woods and the river and follow the
trail in the forest to a great natural pool.

The Desengano State Park Trails guidebook unveils one of the most beautiful and
striking State Parks in Rio de Janeiro. The park has 22,400 hectares (55,350 acres) and is
one of the last remaining continuous patches of Atalntic Forest in a wide area. The
guidebook also presents previously unpublished information, 19 precise maps with
approximately 95 km of trails, circuits and traverses, as well as 280 photographs of the
main natural attractions of this amazing and unknown region on the Northwest of Rio de
Janeiro.
