AMY ROBINSON

Natures Migrants, November 2015

This piece was made using linocuts, watercolour and ink. It was
scanned in and lightly edited using digital software. I was
inspired by old Islamic cartography as well as nature in Islamic
art. The birds depicted are the turtledove, dark-bellied brent
goose, Arctic tern and British swallow. They have been placed
across the map to show their path of migration to the UK.
I decided that the name for the final piece could be 'Nature's
Migrants'. The message behind it is that migration is something
that appears through all areas of nature and it's what allows a
species to thrive and progress. Humans have been moving
round the planet since the beginning of our existence, and
although our migration tends to be strategic and less
instinctive, it's just as much a part of nature as it is for animals
to migrate as well.

NAFEESAH LAMBA
Indian Motif Patterns, November 2015
I developed a series of prints inspired by Dia Batals Tracing
Landscapes exhibition at the Mosaic Rooms, which explored
longing, belonging and identity. Within my prints I have aimed
to explore my familys Indian cultural identity, through
geometric shapes and floral patterns. I photographed personal
objects and , inspired by Reza Abedinis repetition of calligraphy
and Camille Zakharias motif patterns, heat pressed them onto
polyester fabric.

SAMIRAH SHAIKH
Where Are You From?, November 2015.
The theme of my pieces of work is belonging, the idea of
belonging to a country, city, or area which forms a part of our
identity. I was inspired by Islamic art, my family history, work of
Dana Awaetani and Dia Batels Exhibition. When visiting Dia
Betals exhibition I was asked the question where are you
from? This question stuck with me and so I decided to answer
in work. If you look closely you will be able to recognise well
known places; Big Ben, London Eye and the Taj Mahal. You will
also notice a compass with directions written in 2 languages.
Both these factors show the countries and city I associate
myself and has become as part of my identity. However I didnt
want to stop there, I want to ask you where do you come and
what places in the world you associate yourself with?

NICOLE OSEI-AFRIYIE
Me, Myself & I, November 2015
My theme for my art piece is about myself, what it means to be
me and all my imperfections. I was inspired by Dia Batal
because she made a sculptural art piece about belonging and
this gave me an idea to do something similar. My art piece
includes floral patterns on a black and teal background which
shows a bit of my personality, flowers are seen as pure and
innocent however its overshadowed by the darkness of the
background colours, it is then brought out with big gold words
reading Me, Myself & I and an Arabic poem I Reveal Myself by

Fatena Al-Gharra. I chose gold because its such a rich colour

and is seen as a precious colour.

MAKO ABOKAR
Decorative Calligraphy Life Lesson, November
2015
My initial idea is to create a piece using a quote from the Quran
talking about the 10 animals that went to heaven for their good
deeds. Working with the quote it will bring awareness to the
Muslim community to treat animal with better care and that
they also have played a important role in the Quran. My chosen
artist I will be referring to is Maaida Noor who has worked in
many different art forms such as painting in oil, acrylic
and watercolour, book illustration, sketching, pencil work,
portraits and photography. She looks into the artistry of
calligraphy as one of the main mediums for the religious
expression of the message of Allah. With the way she
uses colour it creates a vibrant look and the calligraphy adds an
elegant touch to the piece.

HANG LU
Hope, Love and Justice, November 2015
My final piece is inspired by Abdulnasser Gharem who's known
as one of the most influential Contemporary artist in Saudi
Arabia. As I was influenced by Abdulnasser's originality my goal
was to release a positive message by use three simple yet
meaningful words in Arabic: Love, peace and justice. Moreover
I've also combined geometric symmetrical pattern with rich

colours that are commonly used in Islamic art to respect the

Islamic traditions and positioned a mirrored reflect of an
unidentified child in the centre to portray a message of "peace
upon many victims that have been suffering through the Syrian
Crisis."
My message will hopefully encourage people who suffer from
societys obstacles in war, economic issues or even equality in
our generation.

NADEEN MANAG
Set of Distressed Patterned Coasters, November
2015
I decided to create coasters with my own interpretation of
Islamic patterns using the wood transfer technique on top of
the wood, making it as the main design of my product with a
set of MDF i got from the 3D workshop.
The reason why I picked set of coasters as my final outcome
was because I wanted my design to be something tangible and
at the same time something that has a purpose. Though that is
just me being a 3D student, whom is constantly thinking of the
characteristic of a good design. The artist I have looked at
during the process was Rob Ryan and Umit Koseoglu which both
focuses on patterned designs. Their design helped me create
my own with a touch of their ideas along with mine.

JESSICA FERREIRA
Florals & Geometrics, November 2015

As a fashions/textiles student, I wanted to go into the path of

fashion print. Influenced by Islamic art, I was into the idea of
rich colours, floral designs and geometric shapes, I combined
them altogether to create a repeated pattern. Looking at the
fashion designer Issey Miyake for the way he uses pleats in his
work, I have used that as an influence in my work. I have used
miniature mannequins to create fashion designs, my work
came out more in the likes of African clothes mixed with Islamic
art.

QADIJA MOHAMED
Floral Collection, November 2015
For my piece I focused on floral patterns which are one of the
main aspects of Islamic traditional art others include geometric
shapes and calligraphy. I researched by visiting the V&A's
Islamic rooms and Dia Batel's Tracing Landscape at the Mosaic
Rooms. William Morris, was my main influence because of his
fluorescent designs for my piece I took some of my floral
transfer ink paintings into Photoshop and manipulated them
experimenting with repeat patterns and scale. I then printed
my designs on the gel printer and heat pressed my most
successful onto fabric to create a swatch collection.

HUMAIRA MINDHOLA
Blooming stars, November 2015

I designed three prints inspired by the geometric shapes and

patterns in Islamic art. I was particularly interested in the star
shapes they incorporate into their work so I developed my
ideas and drawings further into my own patterns. Most Islamic
art works and geometric pieces have a green and blue colour
scheme. I decided to stick with this but tone the colours down
to pastel shades because I find these colours more calming and
relaxing to look at.

NEIL MENDOZ
Unity Lampshade, November 2015
The process I have been through helped me explore a different
side of art, Islamic art where I have looked further on
geometric, floral patterns and calligraphy. The main section of
the Islamic art that I was really fascinated on was the geometric
shapes, due to my specialised subject 3D design. So creating
this piece was truly inspired by what Ive experienced in life
and what I want to do in the future to be a Product/Industrial
designer. The concept behind it was to show what my faith was,
which is Christianity and merging it with Islam and my interest
for origami art. The piece of art portrays unity. Religion should
never be the cause of separation and hopefully that is what
people can see in my work.
