MalinowskisDiary

BronislawMalinowskiwasoneofthemostimportantanthropologistsinthe20thcentury,
withhismethodsofstudyingmakinganimpactonthequalityofethnographicworkformany
yearstocome.BorninPolandtoanuppermiddleclassfamily,Malinowskiexcelledin
academicsandwenttotheJagiellonianUniversity,followedbytheUniversityofLeipzig,then
theLondonSchoolofEconomicsin1910,allwhilepursuinghisinterestinethnology.He
decidedtobecomeananthropologistafterreadingJamesFraziers
TheGoldenBough.
AftercompletingfieldworkinMailuIsland,MalinowskitravelledtotheTrobriand
IslandsinPapuaNewGuinea.There,heconductedhisfamousstudiesofTheKulaRing,a
systemoftradingamongtheaboriginalpeoplesinhabitingMelanesia,andpracticedthemethod
ofparticipantobservation:becomingclosewithagroupofpeopleandbecomingveryfamiliar
withtheirpracticesthroughinvolvementoveralongperiodsoftime.Thispavedthewayfor
futureanthropologiststobetterunderstandhowtoefficientlystudyacertaingroupofpeople.
Afterhisstudiesconcluded,MalinowskithenpublishedhisfindingsontheKulaRing,
oneofthefirstdocumentationsofreciprocityandgeneralizedexchangeamonganindigenous
groupofpeople.In1922,hisbook
ArgonautsoftheWesternPacific
waspublishedandshot
Malinowskiintointernationalstardomasarenowned,respectedanthropologist.Inthefollowing
yearsuntilhisdeath,Malinowskiwouldestablishafewschools/institutesandbecomeateacher
atYaleUniversity.Malinowskismostfamousworkhoweverwouldnotbepublisheduntil1967,
25yearsafterhisdeath,called
ADiaryInTheStrictSenseofTheTerm.


ThisdiarywrittenbyMalinowskihimselfwasnotintendedtobepublisheditwaswritten
inPolishandhisdaughterswereagainstthepublicationduetoitscontroversialcontent.His
widowinsistedonthepublication,thereforereleasingallofMalinowskistwistedandweird
thoughtstothegeneralpublic.Itscontentsrangedfromhisracistviewsoftheindigenouspeople
Malinowskihimselfpraisedinhisearlierbooks,hisownmoralconflictswithhimself,toeven
Freudianesquefeelingsofsexualloveforhisownmother.Ofcoursethisshockedthepublic,
andrevealedMalinowskitobeatrulytroubled,oddmanafterall.Itmadethepublicquestionhis
anthropologicalsenseofauthenticitywashegenuineinhispreferredmethodsofstudiesofthese
indigenouspeoplesorwasitjustforthemoneyandfameasanethnographer?Malinowski
actuallyacknowledgedhisfaultsinmoralandethicalcodesinthediaryandwasdeeply
saddenedandfrustratedathimselfmostlythroughoutthesestudies.Thediaryinfactbroughtthe
publictoarealizationthatMalinowskisworkpavedthewayforaselfawaremethodof
anthropology,withtheacknowledgementofmoralbiasesandworkinguponthem.Butthe
questionremains,didMalinowskisprivatethoughtsmattertohiswork?
Inmyopinion,Malinowskisownprivatethoughtsshouldbeleftoutofcontextwhen
analyzinghisworkasananthropologist.Yes,hismoralandethicalcodescouldhavecreated
biasesinhiswork,butthefactthatheacknowledgedhisfaultsandworkedaroundthemproved
thathewasadedicatedworker,contributingtothestudyofanthropologywhetherheenjoyedit
allornot.Also,whoistosaythatotherfamousethnographersdidnothavetheirownradical
opinionsandthoughtswrittenintheirowndiaries?Malinowskiisjustonecasewhereitactually
gotpublished.Everyonehasbiaseswithinthemwhethertheyacceptitornot,andMalinowski
knewthisandconsciouslyacceptedit,knowingheisahumanafterallandcouldnotchange

eventhoughhewantedto.Sure,hewasnotalikeablepersonafterknowinghisownpersonal
thoughts,buttheyweremeanttobeprivateandshouldn'tnecessarilyinterferewiththequalityof
hiswork.Hewasgloballypraisedforhisworkbeforethecontroversyforareason,anditis
becausehewasapioneerofanthropology,pavingthewayforfutureethnographerstouse
efficientmethodsoftheirstudies.
