Weekly Lesson Plan

E.FE.02.11 Identify water sources (wells, springs, lakes, rivers, oceans).

E.FE.02.12 Identify household uses of water (drinking, cleaning, food preparation).
S.IP.02.11 Make purposeful observation of the natural world using the appropriate senses.
S.IA.02.12 Share ideas about science through purposeful conversation.

Engage/
Do Now:

Day 1
I can build a water filtration
system.

Day 2
I can write a persuasive letter to
explain why it is important to
conserve water.

Day 3
I can build an improved
solution to an engineering
challenge.

Day 4
I can complete a pretest and
explain what I already know
about earths surface
features.

Uses and Properties of Water

Earths surface features

Explore:

T will review results from last

class period. Discussing what
went well, and what didnt work
as well. T will remind students
that this is a group effort
encourage teams to share
information.
St will regroup into their teams
from last time and work on a
final filter.
Teams will present their filters
to the class. T will test each
using dirty water.
T will regroup w/students with
the following questions:
How is your water cleaning
system similar to and different
from what the experts taught
us about?
What did you remove from your
water samples? (particles that
could be seen)
Can there be other materials in
the water that you cannot see?
(Yes.)
Is your cleaned water now safe
to drink? (Without testing the
water it should be considered
unsafe to drink.) How could
you make it safer? (ideas from
the experts)
T will confirm that just because
water looks clean, it does not
necessarily mean that it is
clean. Students should never
drink water that isnt labeled as
safe.

T will explain that now that theyve

learned why its important to be
careful with our water, they now
need to tell others. Part of a
scientists job is to share what they
know with others.
St will be writing a persuasive letter
about water conservation.
T will review how much fresh
drinking water Earth contains
compared to water not available for
drinking.
T will review why we need water and
how it is used.
St will share ideas of someone they
feel could use less water. T will write
down their ideas
St letters will have the following
parts:
Introduction with a topic sentence
Reasons why we need to protect
Earths water supply
Observations about how that
person uses more water than
he/she should
Idea on how to cut down on water
use
Conclusion

T will review pros and cons

from the last engineering
challengewhat went well?
What would you do
differently?

St will take a unit pre-test.

T will explain their challenge:

WG will discuss what they

know about Earths surface
features T will record.

With 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1

yard of tape, 1 yard of twine,
and 20 marshmallows teams
of two must build as tall of a
tower as they can.
No extra supplies will be
given. You do not have to use
all of the supplies. The tower
must stand on its own.
T will go over a few building
ideas with students before st
are allowed to work in teams.
St will have 10 minutes to
work in teams of two.
T will guide students though a
debrief afterwardsask
students if the challenge was
easier or more difficult the
second time around. T will
connect how failure can lead
to learning.

St will engage in a think-pair

share about things they know
about Earths surface features.

St will engage in a think-pair

share about things they want to
know about Earths surface
features.
WG will discuss what they want
to know about Earths surface
features T will record.

T reflectionI need to wrap up the water cyclethe filters that the second graders worked on
over break will be tested now that weve come back from break, I hope that a few of them will
work!
