Stroke Space in mm

For HIC15 test, the HIC15 versus the stroke space curves for the two different
impact speeds 35kph (ECE-127 requirement) and 40kph (NCAP test) are as shown in
the figure above. These curves were obtained by varying the stroke space and thus
the value of acceleration, HIC15 and time to impact were calculated. Time less than
15ms was considered (t15ms). The Design HIC15 value is 75% of maximum
acceptable value (75% of 1000), thus we are considering HIC15 value of 750 as the
design target. HIC15 value of 750 is marked with a dotted line on the graph.
1. 35kph (9.7 mm/ms) for legal requirement (ECE-R127)
For HIC15 value of 750 the stroke space value found is about 58 mm
(Approx.)
2. 40kph (11.1 mm/ms) for NCAP tests
For HIC15 value of 750 the stroke value found is approximately 83 mm.
Conclusion:
Considering 58 mm stroke space, it satisfies the safety criteria at a velocity at
35kph, however for 40kph the HIC value is way above 750 and does not satisfy the
design criteria. Thus we need to consider a stroke space of 83 mm which is below
750 (HIC value) for both velocities and satisfies the design criteria.

Therefore the stroke space value considering the material stack up comes to:
83+7=90mm.
To add more, stroke space for 40kph is always higher when compared to 35kph due
to higher velocities.
