Overall Goal

Students will be able to create their own idioms and similes

Specific Objectives
1. Students will be able to use the skills learnt from differentiating idioms and similes and
interpret the video
2. Students will be able to create their own idioms and similes to interpret the video.
Prior Knowledge
Students would already know and be able to identify the difference between idioms and
similes.
Are able to create idioms and similes with use of pictures
Materials and Resources
Computers/laptop/tablet/phone, Instagram account for each student

Assessment
Formal: from the previous homework regarding idioms and similes, the teacher will evaluate
whether or not the students are able to differentiate between the terms and apply that
knowledge in the Instagram activity.
Informal: For the warm up and model practice done with the whole class, the teacher will
visually assess and take into account who understands and who is still struggling. Then the
teacher will re-group so that students who know about idioms and similes will be able to help
those that do not yet know.

Warm up

Review with the class the difference between idioms and simile by
giving sentences and the students will raise their right hand for
idiom and left hand for simile. (or other body gestures e.g.
clapping hands for idioms and blinking your eyes for simile)
After which, ask a student to explain why it is a simile or idiom

The teacher will then introduce the social media Instagram
which is a way of for people to share their videos and
photos online with other people.
Each student will create an Instagram account and follow
the teachers account
The teacher will then go through a few pictures and videos
to show the students what Instagram is all about and the
variety that is available
As a demonstration activity, choose a video and discuss as a
class what is portrayed, the theme, and their feel towards
the video e.g. does the video make them feel adventurous,
angry, surprised etc
Write these ideas on the board
After discussing about the video, together as a class, create
a sentence that describes the video.
With the same sentence, ask the students how they can
change the sentence into an idiom
Together as a class create an idiom using the main ideas
from the original sentence
After which, create a simile using the main ideas from the
original sentence

Practice

With the sentence created (choose either the idiom or simile


sentence), the teacher will put the sentence into either a
song/rap/poem to make a 15-20 second video.
The title of the video should be labeled with a hashtag and
title e.g. #simile video response

End here, or continue if time permits


Ser Intro

10 min Students will watch the same video from the demonstration activity
again
In pairs, students will create an idiom (or simile) sentence to the
same video discussed as a class

Ser Practice

10 min Then students will make a 10-20 second video response through
instagram using their created sentence either through creative song,
poem or rap.
They will then post it onto their account and tag the teacher

Closing Activity

5 min

Teacher will assign pairs to view one anothers video


Students will view the video and write a sentence response with the
hashtag; #response
