ismeanttoexplorethesimilaritiesbetweenKeplerandGalileosinventionsandlives.This
exploresthingsfromthebeginningsoftheirlivestotheend,lookingattheirachievementsand
lives.
GalileoattendedtheUniversityofPisain1581wherehewasabletodiscoverthefact
thatthelamphangingfromtheuniversityceilingtookthesameamountoftimetoswingback
andforthnomatterhowlargetherangeofswing.Threeyearslater,heistaughtbyOstilioRicci
ateacherintheTuscancourt.OstilioRicciwasanItalianmathematician.Ricciisanimportant
forGalileobecauseofhisinfluenceonhisviewsthatmostlikelyinfluencedalargeamountof
Galileo.HegaveinstructioninEuclid(geometry),andArchimedes(mathematicaldiscoveryand
invention)toGalileo.In1589Galileowroteapaperonthecenterofgravityinsolids,soonafter
beingofferedapositionasalecturerattheUniversityofPisa.OneofGalileosworks/inventions
wereinfluencedbyArchimedes.Thecenterofgravityofabodyorsystemofbodiesisthepoint
ofapplicationoftheresultantoftheweightforcesofthedifferentcomponentsofthebodyor
system.Archimedes(287212B.C.E.)wrotethefirsttreatiseoncentersofgravity.His
researcheswererevivedandexpandedinthesixteenthcenturybymanymathematicians
includingGalileo(15641642),whotooktheArchimedeaninvestigationsintothecentersof
gravityofplanefiguresandextendedthemtosolids.1 From15891592Galileoworkedonhis
theoryofmotion.
AristotletheGreekphilosopherandscientistsaidthatbodiesofdifferentweightsfallat
differentrates,butGalileodidnotbelievethiswascorrect.In1604Galileopublishedhis
theoriesknownasthetheoryofuniformacceleration.Thetheoryofuniformaccelerationoccurs
whenthespeedofanobjectchangesataconstantrate.From16091610Galileocontinuedto
makeobservationswithhistelescope,includingCallisto,Europa,Ganymede,andLo,allmoons.
ToshowoffhisdiscoveriesGalileotraveledtoRomein1611.Fromthattimeuntil1616Rome
andGalileodisagreedandfoundthemselvesinconflict.Galileohadchosentowritehis1613
lettersinItalian.Theyattractedalargeraudiencethanthereligiousandscientificcommunities.
OnMarch5,1616,TheCatholicChurchdeclaredGalileo'swritingbanned.16yearslaterGalileo
publishedhisworksDialogueConcerningtheTwoChiefWorldSystemsPtolemaicand
Copernican,ayearlaterthePopeplacedGalileoontrial.Hewasputunderhousearrestfor8
years,in1638hemadethediscoverythatthemoonmakesmonthlywobbles,theywerecalled
liberations.Thiswasjustafewmonthsbeforehewentcompletelyblind.4yearslaterGalileo
diedfromalongtermillness.
Keplerwasbornin1571.HestartedtoattendtheUniversityofTbingenin1589.
Throughout1600KeplerworkedwithTychoBraheandwasassignedtostudytheorbitofMars.
TychoBrahediedin1601,thoughKeplertookupKeplersdataandcontinuedtoworkonituntil
1612.KeplerpublishedhisbookNewAstronomy,thisincludedKeplerswhichincluded

Kepler'sfirstandsecondlawsofplanetarymotion.AtthesimilartimeGalileowasmaking
groundbreakingdiscoveriesthroughhistelescope,Keplerwasabletoprovidesupporttohis
claims.In1619Keplerpublisheshisthirdandfinallawofplanetarymotion.Keplerdiesin1930.
BecauseKeplerwasborninthemiddleoftheScientificRevolutionhewasmostlikelyoneof
themanyverysuccessfulandinfluentialscientistsbecauseoftheexceptionofhiswork.
Kepler
wasconvincedthatGodhadcreatedauniversewithpatternandstructure,hespentamajorityof
hiscareerresearchingandtryingtofigurethisout.Keplerhaddecidedthattheplanetswere
spacedthewaytheywerebecauseiftheorbitsoftheinnerplanets.Keplerbelievedthatthese
werearrangedaroundgeometricfigurescalledThePerfectSolids.PerfectSolidsare
threedimensionalfigureswithidenticalsides.KeplerstheorywasthatGodhadcreatedthese
solidstocreatetheuniverse.
