Ch. 6 Summary

The SS guards were brutal and forced Elie, his father, and the other prisoners in the camp
to run through the snow without stopping. It was pitch black because it was night time, and it felt
like the prisoners had been running forever. The SS guards would shoot anyone who couldnt
keep up with the others. Many times prisoners would give up, fall down in the snow, and then be
shot, trampled to death, or left to freeze to death. Elie entertained the thought of giving up, but he
continued to press on when he thought of his father. He had to be alive to support him. Elie and
the other prisoners arrived at an old brick factory in an abandoned town where Elie and his father
were able to sleep a little. When night had fallen the SS guards ordered the prisoners to form
ranks and they started to march again. They were headed to Gleiwitz camp. When they arrived
he almost suffocated because of the lack of air in the barracks and how crowded it was. He
stayed in Gleiwitz for 3 days, and was given no food or water. On the third day they were driven
out of the barrack. Elie and his father were almost separated but were able to stay together during
the confusion caused by Elie running after his father. They boarded a train and were headed for
central Germany.
