The Career Planning topic covers all these areas. It will focus on
career choice and the process one goes through in selecting an
occupation. This may happen once in our lifetimes, but it is more
likely to happen several times as we first define and then
redefine ourselves and our goals.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing the topic, students should be able to:
1. evaluate personal traits and their job market.
2. write resumes, job application/cover letters and email.
3. adopt proper interview etiquette.
CAREER PLANNING
1.1
Have you ever wondered what is going to happen to you after you have graduated?
Setting up
Further
studies
If you decided to look for jobs or start your own business, do not ever leave your career to
chance or destiny. To succeed, you need to take control. A good career plan helps you
accomplish your goals. It is a useful tool especially when you are a retrenchment or downsizing
casualty, got fired and contemplating career change. A career plan maps your direction with
your interest at heart.
TASK 1: READING COMPREHENSION
Making a Career Plan
A sound career plan takes three-step process.
1. Know Yourself
Poor self-awareness is a major reason for graduates who have jobs far from their major,
job-hop or change careers midstream. To discover what makes you, ask yourself:
Who am I?, What do I like to do?, What am I good at?, What matters to me most?
Your answer gives valuable insights about your skills and abilities, interests, values,
personal traits and work style. While on a self-discovery journey, remember to ask from
family and friends. They can help you identify your hidden strengths and weaknesses. You
can also take personality or skill tests and seeking career guidance from a counselor.
CAREER PLANNING
2. Study Careers
Conduct research on types of careers that might fit onto you. You may compare the
requirements for the positions. Then, narrow your options and make a selection once
youve got the necessary information.
3. Make a Decision
This is the trickiest part. You may take a piece of paper and write on how you see yourself
in a year, five years and ten years from now. You may also weigh the pros and cons of your
top two or three career choices and see the best option.
If you decide to change careers, consider taking part-time or volunteer work to see if the
new profession make you happy rather than resign outright. If your new career choice fails
to meet your expectations, you can try other options until you find your dream job.
A career plan is a continuous activity that changes as you mature over the years. Your plan
has to be flexible and adaptable as you find new opportunities along the way
Answer questions based on the above exert.

Your job frequently reflects your interests, talents and abilities. Who are you? The better you
know yourself, the easier it will be for you to set your career goals. In doing a personal
assessment, you should be concerned with three aspects of life: your abilities, your interests
and your values.
TASK 1 : PERSONAL QUALITIES
Read these extracts from the letters. The writers are applying for jobs. They are
explaining why they are suitable for the job. What kind of job do you think each person is

Value Inventories
Value inventories measure how important different values are to you. Examples of these
values, which play an important role in one's job satisfaction, include autonomy, prestige,
security, interpersonal relations, helping others, flexible work schedule, outdoor work,
leisure time, and high salary.
o
o Interest Inventories
The questions in an interest inventory ask about your likes and dislikes regarding various
activities. The premise of this self assessment tool is that people who share similar
interests will also enjoy the same type of work. Examples of interests are reading, running,
playing golf, and knitting.
o
Personality Inventories
A personality inventory looks at one's individual traits, motivational drives, needs, and
attitudes. The most frequently used personality inventory is the Myers-Briggs Type
Indicator (MBTI).
Skills Assessment
In addition to determining what you're good at, a skills assessment also helps you figure
out what you enjoy doing. The skills you use in your career should combine both
characteristics. You can use the results of the skills assessment to make some changes by
acquiring the skills you need for a particular career.

You may have several occasions to write in to enquire about brief or detailed information on:
courses, seminars and so on in many other areas. You can enquire by telephone, telegram,
fax, telex or postcard. But if you need to write a letter, the presentation, content and layout
depends on what you are enquiring about. Remember to write proper business letters.
Short Enquiries
For short enquiries, you may write a brief letter where you state briefly and clearly
what you want or write a business postcard as shown below.

Writing a thank you letter is not only extremely important but is also a common courtesy. There
are various times when writing a thank you letter is appropriate - anything from a formal, afterinterview thank you letter to a casual, from-the-heart thanks to the person you love or
appreciate. Writing a thank you letter will always serve as a kind gesture.
A thank you letter demonstrates thoughtfulness, which is a characteristic many employers and
people value. Since so few take the time to write a thank you letter, someone who does will
indeed be remembered.
Your thank you letter does not need to be lengthy. Just a few kind words even, will show that
you put some time and thought into your message.

Dear Pn Marina,
I enjoyed the opportunity to meet with you and have a brief tour of Widget Corporation. The
high level of creative energy among your staff, as well as their personal pride in the company's
products, was obvious and very gratifying to see.
In addition to the information I shared with you in our meeting, I thought of another project I
worked on that reflects the kind of contribution I could make as a member of Widget's product
development team. The details of that project (the proposal and the final report, both of which I
authored) are enclosed for your review.
As soon as you're through interviewing the other candidates, I'd appreciate hearing from you,
and of course I'd be pleased to meet with you again, if necessary, on fairly short notice. I can
be reached at home in the evening as well as at my office during the day.

CAREER PLANNING
The resume should be written before you write the letter of application because it forces you to
think about yourself in terms of your skills and qualities. You then know what you can offer an
employer. The layout is very important since the resume is likely to be read with more thought if
it is attractive to the eye and easy to read.
CONTENTS:
Personal details
The amount of personal information required varies from country to country. Common personal
data that are given such as full name, age, address, telephone number etc.
Education
The name of your school may not impress the employer, but if you attended a prestigious
school this may impress him. The name of your college or university is important since certain
ones are well known for particular courses.
Qualifications
If you have a Diploma level then the Certificate level is less important. Similarly the class of
your university degree will be of greater significance to the employer than your Diploma level. If
you have obtained any professional qualifications through correspondence or evening classes,
be sure to mention these.
When you have not received the results of an examination, you cannot claim to have obtained
the qualification. Hence, the section 'Results Awaited' is needed.
Experience
When you are applying for the first permanent job you should include all the part time jobs you
have had. Some of the experience may be indirectly relevant, and in any case it indicates your
willingness to work.
The presentation of the experience in the resume is chronological, starting with the earliest and
moving on to the most recent. However if you do adopt this reverse chronological order for
experience, then you should do the same for your education and qualifications.
Extra - curricular Activities
Think of your extra - curricular activities in relation to your job. If you have been a committee
member this proves you have taken on a position of responsibility. Although it is important to
include any information that reflects your qualities and personality in a favorable light, do not
make false claims. You may be found out at the interview.
References
An alternative heading to 'References' is 'Referees'. The referee is the person who provides
the reference. In selecting a referee, you should decide who is most familiar with your
professional ability. It can be your lecturer who knows your ability or an engineer who knows
you during your industrial training.
33
CAREER PLANNING
Whoever you choose to act as your referee, be sure to ask his permission first. You may wish
to ask this person to write a testimonial for you. There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to
preparing the resume as there are many formats to adopt.
