DIANA. It’s perfect. I’m enraptured by the name. Idle-
wild! (She drinks again.)
ANNE. You've finished your cordial already. You must
have some more. (She pours another for DIANA who
drinks.)
DIANA. It’s the best raspberry cordial lever drank. (ine
continues to drink.) te
ANNE. Everything Marilla makes is the best. She’s.teach-
ing me to cook, but it’s all-uphill. I 'start.daydreaming
and forget things - like.wheh"I forgot to put.the- flour
in the cake, or the .stigar.im thé shortbread. {They
laugh, DIANA quite loudly.) And last week was the
worst. We had a plum pudding with sauce, and.some
} was left over, so Marilla-told me to put it in the pantry
and cover it. Well, I forgot all about covering ‘the
sauce, and, Diana, a thouse drowned ‘in it! (DIANA
laughs, uproariously, then finishes her cordial.)
DIANA. Imagine... a mousé. May I please have hidther?
ANNE.:Of course. (She pours the cordial, and DIANA im-
mediately. begins to drink.) Well, ‘1 lifted the-moisé out
and threw it in the yard, but I forgot to tell Marilla
about it. The next day, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ross
from ‘Spenserville were here, and Marilla served the
pudding and sauce to them. (DIANA is near hysterics
over this as she continues to drink.) Of course, I
shrieked out, “You mustn’t use that pudding sauce, A
mouse drdwned in it!” (She laughs.) I’m afraid ’'m
such a trial for Marilla..(DIANA has suddenly become
very quiet. She rises unsteadily.) Why, Diana, what‘is the
smatter?..
DIANA. I don’t feel very well. I think Fd better go home.
ANNE, But we haven’t had our‘ tea. I’ll-get it this very
