the coexistence of several religions and beliefs

PRLOGO

Muchas gracias.

TURISMO:
PROMOVER NUESTRO PATRIMONIO COMN
Y FOMENTAR EL ENTENDIMIENTO MUTUO
Taleb Rifai

prcticas a nivel poltico.

Mara, passant viles i muntanyes en menys temps dun moment1.

seduce a muchos turistas.

siglo XIV a.

un nuevo producto, susceptible de convertirse en un paquete y ser comercializado. Esta ruta tiene, obviamente, un componente religioso y mstico;
exista alguna fundacin teresiana.

GUANAJUATO: PATRIMONIO,
EVENTOS RELIGIOSOS Y PUEBLOS MGICOS
Fernando Olivera Rocha

Deben extenderse a

Procedencia
y acompaar a familiares o amigos (42%).

FOREWORD
The past six decades have seen international tourism progress as one
of the biggest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world. This
expansion has been chronicled by a dramatic evolution through the years
from a mere 25 million tourists in the 1950s to over a billion people
crossing international borders today; from travel itineraries once being
exclusive to the traditional destinations of Europe and North America, to
now embracing many of the worlds emerging and developing destinations;
from tourism once being the realm of the privileged elite, to an activity
participated in by a rapidly growing middle class worldwide.
Indeed, today, tourism is a trillion dollar global activity that accounts for
9% of the worlds GDP, as much as 30% of total service exports and one in
eleven jobs across the world. In 2013, international tourist arrivals hit a
record-setting total of 1,087 million, well on its way to reach the projected
1.8 billion tourists by the year 2030.
These impressive figures are just the tip of the iceberg. The deeper
significance of tourism lies in its capacity to transform lives by providing
jobs and livelihoods for millions of people worldwide, driving the economy
forward, but mostly, by promoting cultural understanding and peace,
bringing together people of all faiths and values.
I would like to sincerely thank the Ministry of Industry, Energy and
Tourism of Spain for partnering with UNWTO in making possible the
holding of the 2014 International Congress on Religious Heritage and
Tourism as well our dear partners Visitelche and the City Council of
Elche for being such memorable hosts.
I trust that this book will be an excellent vehicle to share the good examples
that were presented during the congress while opening an engaging debate
on the challenges and benefits emerging from the interaction between
tourism development and the preservation and promotion of religious
heritage sites and traditions.

our distinct tourism product, Elche is revealed as one of the most unique
destinations in our country and with a greater capacity for growth.
Since 2011, the Town Council which I chair has therefore firmly opted for
turning the improvement of the tourism products and tourist promotion
of the city into one of the strategic priorities of our government action,
with the aim of making Elche a preferred tourist destination. Because we
are also convinced that tourism is a powerful factor in generating wealth
and employment.
To achieve this goal, almost three years ago we formulated the Elche
Tourism Management Plan, which defined the basic lines of municipal
action in this area, and created a new tourist city brand: Elche, a
Mediterranean oasis.
Since then, we have launched a comprehensive marketing plan that both
via internet, website and social networks, and through the mainstream
media and influencers, wants to position our city as a tourist destination.
And we have developed a variety of actions to improve our offer,
from renovation and signaling of the Palm Grove to the opening of new
museum spaces.
Quality tourism
In this context, religious tourism also deserves a very special attention
because visits to religious sites or going through experiences of this nature
are among the main motives for traveling.
Travelers indeed seek not only the gifts of nature (like the sea, the sun
and good weather that we enjoy in Elche), but also the most deeply rooted
creations of human spirit.
A quality tourist offer is made, as this congress demonstrates, of both
tangible properties, monumental and full of content, and intangible
realities and the cultural events fostered by them. In this sense, our Festa is,
and I am not blinded by passion, one of the most important in the world.
But not only the Misteri is an element of attraction within the religious
tourism. So are the Coming of the Virgin, the festivities of the Virgin
we celebrate at Christmas and which are closely linked to the Misteri,
commemorating the arrival by sea of the Mother of God; and Easter, a time
when our Palm Grove comes alive, particularly on the emotional, artistic
and crowded Palm Sunday, declared Fiesta of International Tourist Interest.
For all these reasons, we are very proud to be the host city of the First
International Congress on Religious Heritage and Tourism: types, trends
and challenges.

Ms. Isabel Borrego, Secretary of State for Tourism; Ms. Mercedes Alonso
Garca, Mayor of Elche; Mr. Mximo Buch Torralva, Councillor for
Economy, Industry, Tourism and Employment; Honorable guests, Ladies
and Gentlemen; estimados amigos, dear friends.
Buenos das a todos.
On behalf of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), I am pleased
to welcome you all to the International Congress on Religious Heritage
and Tourism.
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the government of Spain
as well as the City of Elche for the close collaboration in organizing this
important congress.
Dear Isabel Borrego; Dear Mayor, thank you very much for such a
successful partnership and for warmly welcoming us to this historic
city of Elche.
Cultural treasures
Elche is truly a fitting host to stage this event, being a city shaped by its
historical, religious and cultural heritage.
Elche is the only Spanish town with three UNESCO World Heritage
sites the Palmeral of Elche, one of the largest palm groves in the world;
the Museo Escolar de Pusol, recognized by UNESCO for safeguarding
intangible cultural heritage, and of course, the Mystery Play of Elx, declared
a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The sacred Mystery Play is an extraordinary facet of Valencian cultural
heritage and endures as the last living testimony of European religious
theatre of the Middle Ages. It was also the first Spanish traditional
celebration inscribed in the World Heritage List.
Apart from these cultural treasures, Elche is of course also known for its
iconic Lady of Elche, an archaeological masterpiece of ancient Iberian religion.

Yet, the progressive growth of religious tourism leaves us with several
challenges, which I would like to highlight as a way to set the scene for the
debates that will follow.
These challenges include:
1. The preservation of religious sites and monuments including issues
of congestion management.
2. The respect for local traditions.
3. The development of a sustainable local economy in which the benefits
of the sector trickle down to the host communities.
4. The need to ensure a positive and enriching visitors experience.
Addressing these challenges and defining new opportunities to develop
religious sites sustainably are at the core of this congress.
I trust that the knowledge and experience of all speakers and participants
will make a significant contribution to advance this agenda.
Leveraging the growing interest for religious tourism is not only
beneficial for the tourism sector, but crucial in building cultural dialogue,
mutual understanding and peace.
I must say, it is always a special pleasure for us to meet in Spain, the host
country of our Organization and a true partner in fulfilling our mandate of
making tourism a key driver in social and economic development.
In closing, I would like to thus thank once again the Secretary of State for
Tourism and the City of Elche for making this event possible and for such
a warm welcome.
And finally, allow me to take this opportunity to invite you all to join
us at the First UNWTO/UNESCO Conference on Tourism and Culture
taking place in Cambodia next February.
Muchas gracias.

First of all, I would like to congratulate the organisers the World Tourism
Organization, the State Secretariat of Tourism and the City Council of
Elche on the initiative of holding the congress Religious heritage and
tourism: types, trends and challenges. And also, for choosing a referent city
for religious tourism in the Valencia Region, with goods of immaterial
cultural interest at a global scale, such as the Mystery Play of Elche.
Nowadays, no one doubts about the importance of religious tourism,
which allows us to safeguard our heritage and to contribute to the social
and economic development of the area and to the maintenance of the
cultural heritage of the people. From the conclusions of the congress we
may take as a reference the tools, strategies and destination marketing
programs to reach those interested in religious tourism in an effective and
profitable way. As a representative of a region with plenty of resources for
this kind of tourism, this information is vital for the design of strategies.
In our region we have six elements of the UNESCO World Heritage List:
three tangible sites (one of them, the Palmeral de Elche Palm Grove of
Elche) and three intangible elements, amongst which the Festa dElx (the
Mystery Play of Elche) stands out. These assets in our destination Valencia
Region, are also organized through cultural axes with a great tourist
attraction, such as the route Camino de San Vicente Mrtir (through the
provinces of Castelln and Valencia), the Monasterios route (in Valencia)
and the Camino de Santiago de Levante.
This wide range of cultural activities much of them with religious
content, are based at the same time on the different festive events, which
generate hundreds of thousands of trips every year, such as the Holy
Week, Corpus Christi, pilgrimages and processions, with a large number
of churches, places of worship, monasteries and abbeys. All these relics
are sufficiently attractive by themselves and give the visitor the chance of
reliving historical events and enjoying beautiful landscapes at the same

time. The existing resources that belong to our history and culture are,
without a doubt, innumerable and we must exploit and point them out by
taking the necessary measures in order to raise awareness of their existence
and protect them.
From the Regional Ministry of Economy, Industry, Employment and
Tourism, we are carrying out actions to develop our tourism offer through
different programmes such as Pla Millor, which seeks to adapt the cultural
resources to a touristic use; to declare festivities of tourist interest, to
support the applications for the UNESCO List and to collaborate on
the production of festivals. We also organize different training and
specialization programmes with familiarization and press trips, which we
promote through the almost two hundred offices existing in the network
Tourist Info of the Valencia Region.
In this sense, I would like to make special mention to the great
contribution of the offices of this municipality for the benefit of the cultural
and religious tourism of our Region.
We are all well aware of the importance of cultural and religious tourism
for driving the economy forward and, therefore, creating employment
for every 100 jobs in the tourism sector, 21 extra jobs are indirectly
created, hence, we are going to keep working together with the sector
in order to revitalize and position our districts by promoting unique
products, generating tourism experiences that will differentiate us from
our competitors and contribute to the preservation of our environment.
Throughout these work sessions, a group of experts will give us their
own vision for revitalizing the religious tourism in an innovative way and
as an element of tourism development that will contribute to a deeper
collective analysis by exchanging unique experiences.
I would like to finish thanking the work done by all parts involved in the
holding of this congress, as well as all participants that will allow us to reach
new and deeper points of view related with reconciling and generating
positive synergies for religious tourism by sharing their own knowledge.
I would also like to extend them a hand in order to keep working for
religious and cultural tourism in the destinations in the Valencia Region.

at its 28th session, the World Heritage Committee took note of the results of
the ICOMOS analysis of the World Heritage List and Tentative Lists which
includes also an analysis of the religious properties included on these lists.
The term Religious property, as used in the ICOMOS analysis Filling
the Gaps an Action Plan for the Future, defines any form of property
with religious or spiritual associations: churches, monasteries, shrines,
sanctuaries, mosques, synagogues, temples, sacred landscapes, sacred
groves, and other landscape features, etc.
The term sacred site includes areas of special spiritual significance to
peoples and communities; and the term sacred natural site corresponds to
the areas of land or water having special spiritual significance to peoples
and communities, as proposed by the UNESCO/IUCN Guidelines for the
Conservation and Management of Sacred Natural Sites, 2008.
Types of properties
To define types of properties with religious or spiritual associations
inscribed on the World Heritage List, the World Heritage Centre has
developed a data base of all properties of religious interest, dividing them
into sixteen subcategories of sites on the basis of the documents publically
available at http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/:
1. Sites whose religious or sacred interest is explicitly underlined in the
title and/or criteria, Statement of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV).
2. Sites with associated sacred values or with a sacred dimension for local
communities (generally sacred landscapes or places of worship).
3. Sites with an exclusively religious character (churches, cathedrals,
basilicas, mosques, etc.).
4. Places that bear witness to religious facts throughout history - Relic
Cultural Landscapes.
5. Sites with a religious character that represent the efforts of human
genius and that are perceived by the international community as touristic
places bearing witness to historical events whilst remaining places of
worship for local communities (mostly archaeological sites).
6. Historic centres or cities with components such as important religious
structures or places of worship/pilgrimage that contribute to the OUV
(used or not by the religious communities).
7. Historic centres or cities that were known for their religious influence
in the past, and that have either kept this character or this past is illustrated
by a museum, commemorative ensemble or memorial cities.
8. Multi-confessional cities, although this specific feature is not always

Mutual understanding
The future of religious heritage calls for dialogue and mutual understanding
among all stakeholders concerned. Culturally and environmentally
sustainable management of heritage of religious interest should be the
responsibility of all stakeholders concerned, and that mutual acceptance
and respect will bring different and complementary perspectives to shared
cultural and spiritual values.
We are all aware that in todays interconnected world, where we are
grappling with serious socio-economic difficulties, ensuring constructive
dialogue between the worlds cultures and religions ranks as one of the most
pressing challenges on the international agenda. Only through dialogue
can we hope to dispel the misunderstandings, prejudices, and stereotypes
that fuel conflict. Accordingly, UNESCO has designated dialogue as a
priority area and strives through its worldwide activities to incorporate
dialogue into development strategies. It is our profound conviction that
sustainable development cannot be attained without dialogue.
This dialogue could be reinforced through implementation of concrete
activities developed in consultation and collaboration among all
stakeholders within the framework of UNESCOs normative instruments,
and as a fundamental part of the cultural policy of each state party.
The managers of a property with strong spiritual and religious associations
need to take into account not only the propertys outstanding universal

cultural or natural values, but also its sacred values, as they reflect an
outstanding interchange of cultural and religious ideas. As well, they should
seek to establish this process in coordination with the religious community.
How can the sacred values of a site be maintained when the site is overrun
by mass tourism?
As highlighted in the UNESCO World Report on Cultural Diversity
published in 2009, an increasingly important segment of cultural tourism
relates to faith travel, tourism motivated by religious or spiritual reasons
or associated with religious heritage sites, which has led to the creation
of very sophisticated infrastructures in pilgrimage sites and varied tourist
itineraries. The Report notes that this form of cultural tourism linked
to UNESCO World Heritage properties of religious interest plays an
important role in the promotion of cultural diversity.
The economic benefits from this form of tourism can also be substantial.
For the potential benefits to be realized in practice, it is necessary that the
countries concerned fulfil their responsibilities to conserve and maintain the
sites in question and to ensure that religious tourism remains sustainable,
which means that it deals effectively with issues related to environmental,
social and cultural conservation and preservation of local areas.
Pilgrimage routes and religious itineraries require well-coordinated
integrated management, including partnerships and collaboration among
all the host communities, tourism professionals and territorial development
authorities involved.
The establishment of a global network between all stakeholders
concerned, including managers and users of sites and pilgrim routes
inscribed on the World Heritage List, could be one of the essential
steps in the development of a specific cooperation framework and
appropriate strategies, including guidelines for visitor management,
which would enable the positive synergies between tourism, pilgrimages
and heritage conservation.

Indias diversity
It is no surprise that Indias diversity has inspired many writers to pen
differing perceptions of the countrys culture. These writings paint a
complex and often conflicting picture of the culture of India. The best
definition has been provided by Dr. Amartya Sen, the Indian Nobel
Laureate in Economics. According to him, the culture of modern India is
a complex blend of its historical traditions, influences from the effects of
colonialism over centuries and current Western culture both collaterally
and dialectically. Sen observes that external images of India in the West
often tend to emphasise the difference real or imagined between India
and the West. There is a tendency in the Western countries to distance
and highlight the differences in Indian culture from the mainstream of
Western traditions, rather than to discover and show similarities.
Western writers and media usually neglect, in important ways, crucial
aspects of Indian culture and traditions and its diversities. The deep-seated
heterogeneity of Indian traditions, in different parts of India, is lost in
these homogenised descriptions of India. India is not and can never be a
homogenous culture.
Thus, Intangible Cultural Heritage such as the Indian example, is
Definition of ICH
What is Intangible Cultural Heritage? Heritage, let us remind ourselves,
does not end at monuments or collection of objects of arts. It also includes
traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on
to our descendents, such as oral traditions, performing arts, religious and
cultural festivals and traditional crafts. This Intangible Cultural Heritage,
by its very nature, is fragile and needs protection and understanding since
it is an important factor in maintaining cultural diversity in the face of
growing globalisation. One is of the view that developing understanding
of the ICH of different communities, such as in India, helps the process
of an international, inter-cultural dialogue and promotes, in the long run,
international peace and security.
ICH is best defined as:
Traditional, contemporary and living at the same time, since it is a
dynamic process.
Inclusive since it contributes to social cohesion, encourages a sense
of identity and helps to preserve communities and community life.
Representative since it prospers on oral skills passed on from
generation to generation.

the Maharana who was like the local Maharaja, with his courtiers. While
the ruler is bestowing gifts on some people, a merry dance is on, and in
the center a tank filled with coloured water awaits the revellers. A Bundi
miniature shows a king seated on a tusker and from a balcony above some
damsels are showering gulal (coloured powder) on him.
King Harshavardhana in the 7th century AD, has also mentioned
about Holikotsav in his work Ratnavali that was written during the 7th
century. The famous Muslim traveller and writer, who today could be
defined as an early tourist, Alberuni has also mentioned Holikotsav in
his historical memoirs. Other Muslim writers of the same period have
noted, that Holikotsav was not confined to Hinduism. It was celebrated by
all of Indias diverse communities including the Muslims and the earliest
Christians and Jews, and later the Zoharashtrians who fled to India to
escape prosecution in Persia.
Calculating the date of Holi
In India, as in the whole of Asia, the lunar month prevails and has been the
practice for thousands of years. There are two ways of reckoning a lunar
month purnimanta and amanta. In the former, the first day starts after
the full moon; and in the latter, after the new moon. Though the amanta
reckoning is now more common, the purnimanta was very much in vogue
in ancient India. According to this purnimanta, Phalguna Purnima or the
spring new moon was the last day of the year and the new year heralding
the Vasanta-ritu, the first day of spring, would start from the next day.
Thus the full moon festival of Holika gradually became a spring festival,
symbolising the joy that spring brings after winter.
Legends and Mythology
However, since ICH is a dynamic process, the meaning of the Festival has
changed over the years. It also has different manifestations in different
parts of India. Even these myths and legends are diverse and reflect Indias
fascinating intangible heritage. In the Eastern part of India, especially
in Bengal and Orissa, Holi Purnima, the full moon, is also celebrated
as Dol Purnima, which coincides with the birthday of Shri Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu, a saint who lived in Bengal in the 15th century.
In North India, among the various legends to explain the meaning of
this word, the most popular is the legend associated with the demon king
Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashyap wanted everybody in his kingdom to
worship only him but to his great disappointment, his son, Prahlad became

reason for celebrating Holi pertains to the tradition of Holika Dahan. The
mutation period of winter and spring, induces the growth of bacteria in
the atmosphere as well as in the body. When Holika is burnt, temperature
rises to about 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Following the tradition when people
perform Parikrima (circumambulation or going around) around the fire,
the heat from the fire kills the bacteria in the body, thus, cleansing it. In
the Southern part of India too, the festival has a beneficial effect. The day
after the burning of Holika, people put ash (Vibhuti) on their forehead.
They mix Chandan (sandal-paste) with the young leaves and flowers of the
mango tree and consume it to promote good health. People also clean their
houses on Holi which generates positive energies.
Folk practices
Holi is also linked with folklore and folk culture. Let me give one example
of the Chhau dance. This dance form is a tradition from the Eastern part
of India, specially Bihar, which enacts episodes from the Epics, including
Mahabharata and Ramayana, local folklore and abstract themes. Its three
distinct styles hail from the regions of Seraikella, Purulia and Mayurbhanj,
in Eastern India. Chhau dance is intimately connected to regional
festivals, notably the spring festival Chaitra Parva. Its origin is traceable
to indigenous forms of dance and martial practices. Its vocabulary of
movement includes mock combat techniques, stylized gaits of birds and
animals and movements modelled on the chores of village housewives.
According to Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan in her authoritative Tradition of
Indian Folk Dance, the Mayurbhanj Chau, a dance drama form which is
performed by villagers with an elaborate ritual which precedes it, is as
rigorously structured as the classical dance form of India in the artistic
form and content that it demonstrates. It represents a transitional stage in
the development of unsophisticated forms of folk dance to highly stylised
forms. It is the creation of an individual genius within the community.
There are many other such folk practices, including song and dance,
which are part of the ritual of the Holi festival in different parts of India.
The Chhau is the most representative and perhaps one of the most
interesting since it is one of the earliest indigenous form of dances in India.
These practices demonstrate that in India, living continuity with the past,
is a firm criterion for its heritage. These folk cultures, therefore, are part of
Indias age-old intangible cultural heritage.

The Festa or Misteri dElx can be described as the celebration that the
city of Elche dedicates yearly to its patron virgin, Virgen de la Asuncin.
One of its highlights is the representation of a religious drama born in the
late fifteenth century, which is divided in two parts, and is enacted, sung,
and experienced inside the basilica of Saint Mara in the city, on August
14 and 15.
This is the most important community celebration for the ilicitanos (the
inhabitants of Elche) and it is also their main identity symbol. It has been
held without interruption for over five hundred years, thanks to a rescript
granted by Pope Urban VIII in 1632 that saved the provisions of the Council
of Trent (1545-1563), thus becoming a key to understanding medieval
religious drama. This unique and exceptional nature of the Festa dElx was
stressed in a special way by the UNESCO, which proclaimed it Masterpiece
of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on May 18, 2001.
The plot of the Misteri dElx, based on the apocryphal Assumptionist
gospels, passed on since the first centuries of Christianity, uses Valencian
verses sung in monodic melodies of Gregorian inspiration, and
polyphonic melodies introduced in the 16th century. The stage machinery
is impressive, as the dome of the temple is transformed into an inner sky,
from where characters of the celestial world, angels and the Holy Trinity,
descend by means of three mechanical devices. These are also in action
during the rise in body and soul of the Mother of Christ, to be crowned as
the firstfruits of humankind.
The Vespra
Following medieval tradition, the Festa is divided in two parts, or days.
During the first part, called the Vespra (Eve), the Virgin Mary, represented
by a child, expresses her desire to meet her son. Before the Garden of
Gethsemane, mount Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre, she recounts her
memories of the Passion of Jesus. The sky answers the desires of the Mother
by sending an angel inside a cloud, popularly known as the Mangrana,
or Granada, due to its winged shape, reminiscent of the pomegranate
fruit. The angel tells Mary that on the third day she will rejoin Jesus, and
gives her a golden palm in order to protect her during her Transit. On her
return to heaven, the same angel declares that the Virgin will also fulfil
her last wish of saying goodbye to the apostles who preached the Gospel
throughout the world.
The first to arrive is John, showing his grief at the loss of the Mother. He
is given the task of carrying the celestial palm during the burial. After him,
Saint Peter, with the symbolic keys of heaven, and the rest of the apostles,
with the exception of Saint Thomas. Three of the disciples, which enter the
church through three different doors so as to represent their meeting at
a crossroads, sing their amazement in the first polyphonic piece of work,
known as the Ternari, at how they have been carried from their places
of preaching to the house of Mary, passant viles i muntanyes en menys
temps dun moment.1
The soul of Mary
The apostles intone a salve in honour of Mary, combining Valencian verses
with some in Latin, and thus the Virgin dies, after instructing them that
her body is to be buried in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. In this moment, the
child who played the role of the Virgin is replaced by the image of the
patron Virgin of Elche, who gathers from this point on all the attention and
devotion of the ilicitanos. Her recumbent figure appears in scene wearing
a mask painted with closed eyes, to simulate her Dormition. The disciples
venerate the holy and glorified body of Mary and a chorus of angels named
Araceli descends from heaven. It consists of three adults and two children,
carried by a stage mechanism that resembles an altarpiece or mandorla (a
certain frame used for paintings of Christ). These angels take the soul of
Mary, represented by a small image. The first part of the Misteri concludes
as she enters Heaven.
During all the night through the 14th to the 15th of August the city
remains sleepless. In addition to other popular festivities, this is the night
of the Ro, a kind of community vigil in which the ilicitanos, with lighted
candles, walk in silence and spontaneously the same streets that the official
procession will traverse during the next morning. Masses start at four in
the morning, and are held every hour at the same stage where the Misteri is
1 Crossing villages and mountains in but a moment of time.

this regard. It is very common to find during the celebrations of the Festa,
to the astonishment or doubt of those who come for the first time, that
their seating neighbours, spontaneously and generously, resolve this or
that doubt, or explain the meaning of what is taking place in the stage. The
ilicitanos, therefore, play the role of real cicerones during the festivities.
On many occasions, scholars or curious in general have expressed their
amazement at such a displaying of kindness. We see that this centuries-long
tradition of hosting has marked the modus operandi of the community
with their visitors.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that although the concept of the Misteri
has varied throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, and its cultural value
has joined, and at times has countered, its religious value, the interest
towards it remains. La Festa is an undeniable attraction for tourism, and
its declaration as National Monument in 1931 backs up this premise. The
preamble to the decree, while stressing its artistic and musical aspects,
noted the need to protect it, since its disappearance would mean a harm
to our culture and to art in general; but also an economic damage, because
the annual audition of the Mystery is, and can be to even a greater extent,
a legitimate reason of attraction for tourism and therefore a source of
revenue (Gaceta de Madrid, 16-IX-1931).
Since the proclamation of the Misteri as intangible heritage, this tourist
attraction has increased significantly. It is the job of the city of Elche,
and especially of the Board that takes care of the event, to cope with the
increasing demand. In this sense, the Municipal Museum of the Festa offers
throughout the year a sample of the values and features of the celebration.
But at the same time, it is necessary that the staging of the Festa is kept
safe from the demands of the said tourism in order to keep it intact as
a hallmark for the ilicitanos identity, result of a Valencian and Christian
culture, which is this exceptional community celebration, that Elche has
kept alive until today to present it to all humankind.

Since 1926, reports have indicated the intensity of the altars to the dead
and the free access to them (Basauri, 1999). Today, thousands of tourists
visit Ocotepec to observe these spectacular altars, especially the new ones,
devoted to people who died in the last eleven months and who are returning
to their homes for the first time. Tourist visits occur in an atmosphere of
harmony with local families based on a profound tolerance, a demand for
respect and a broad sense of sharing. The visitors, the majority of whom
follows the protocol for visiting the altars, give the families a bouquet of
flowers and a candle, in accordance with tradition. In turn, visitors are
presented with food and drinks.
Ethical principles
In offering foreigners food, the people of Ocotepec are acting in accord
with an ethical principle of their culture: feeding oneself and feeding others.
Within Mexican indigenous cultural tradition, the greater the number
of participants, the more effective the rituals are. The belief is that this
produces a supplementary charge of sacred energy, or shadow, both for the
dead and the sacred images and beings that manage nature, benefitting the
relationships and, consequently, the assistance these supernatural powers
can offer them. In all this, Ocotepec does not exhibit; Ocotepec shares.
Here tourists can have an enriching intercultural experience, beyond
the mere appreciation of the aesthetic aspects of the Day of the Dead
altars. Visits take place between approximately five in the afternoon and
nine at night. In other words, they do not interfere with the most intimate
moments involving the altars, which must be ready at noon, the time
when, according to local belief, the dead arrive. After nine oclock at night,
the families tend to visit the altars of their closest relatives, making the
rounds until dawn.
In places such as Ocotepec, the cemetery can be considered an extension
of the houses. The arrangement of the graves is truly exceptional, both in
the aesthetic sense and for the great diversity of themes and forms. This has
made them famous, attracting regional, domestic and international tourists.
Their presence is not only tolerated, but the attitude is so hospitable and
accepting that an agreeable atmosphere is created.
Achieving this harmony is the result of a process involving the two
parties: the people in the community and the tourists, in addition to the
confluence of several special circumstances. On the one hand, we have a
community very proud of its traditions, in many cases of indigenous origin,
being transformed in a long process of reconfiguration and adaptation. The
traditional devotional methods are part of their local culture that has served
as the foundation for extraordinary community organizing, very well known
in the region and expressed socially with a certain degree of autonomy. This is
a conurban area that chose to reveal a part of its varied religious life in the face
of immigration and conurbation. On the other hand, a special task has been
promoting among tourists the idea that witnessing an unfamiliar religious
activity not only provides memorable aesthetic elements, it also involves an
encounter with unique ideas and rituals that can be a source of enrichment.
State, national and international institutions have also had an impact by
providing a series of acknowledgments of this unique community, which
has begun to influence other communities in the region. An excellent
example is UNESCO. This institution, attached to the United Nations,
stated: The serious threats to numerous ancestral cultures and the dizzying
processes of change and social transformation that many communities are
experiencing have motivated UNESCO to situate among its highest priorities
the identification and promotion of the living heritage that constitute the
specificity of thousands of social groups (Ibid.14) (Prez, 2014: pg. 40).
On November 2, 2014, municipal and local authorities and part of
the community of Ocotepec witnessed the unveiling of a plaque by the
person in charge of the National Anthropology and History Institute
(INAH) UNESCO World Heritage relationship. The plaque attests to
the importance that community members grant the ritual they perform
to honor their dead: The inhabitants of the community of Ocotepec
submitted to UNESCO their Indigenous Festivals Devoted to the Dead, a
celebration they have held for years with extreme zeal, pride and dedication,
for inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible World Heritage.

We all must know that, belief system is an important part of the human
history. Since the moment we, humans, were conscious of ourselves,
some aspect of belief, what may be called the mind, was with us. As a
palaeontologist, Ive been working in the field of human evolution for the
past 30 years. The first expression of attention to the dead and manipulation
of human remains by early humans was registered 160,000 years ago.
From the very beginning of the appearance of Homo sapiens, before
the diversity in colours and faces, people were conscious of themselves.
Children were buried upon death, which suggests that they were much
loved. This could be considered as a spiritual practice, depicting the level
of their consciousness; humans were conscious from a long time ago.
Tangible and intangible sites are quite difficult to separate from each other,
because the intangible heritage is interconnected with the tangible one.
King Solomon
Christianity was introduced in Ethiopia before it was introduced in Europe.
To be more specific, according to scriptures it was introduced during the
1st century AD. However, it became state religion during the last quarter of
the 4th century.
Judaism beliefs were introduced during the reign of king Solomon of
Israel and the queen of Sheba of ancient Ethiopia. It is believed that it was
during that time that the Ark of the Covenant was brought to ancient
Ethiopia. There are also ancient structures and temples in northern
Ethiopia that show Ethiopians had adopted some kind of belief system in
God. Yeha temple is one of the oldest structures. Next to it, there is a very
old church dating from the early Christian era.
Researchers from the University of Mekele, Ethiopia, have found Sabean
writings and statues of possible goddesses in the Wukro archaeological
site. Many of those statues show us the place where they sacrificed
animals. The statues were beheaded. This may depict that Judaism was
Christmas day
Debre Damo is another monastery from the 6th century. It is still in use. It is
also located on top of a cliff. In order to get inside, visitors have to be pulled
up with a rope from the top, for 15 metres. This monastery was founded
by one of the Nine Saints. The only thing that has been changed from its
original form is the roof. The roof was made of grass, but the rest of the
structure has not been modified at all.
Churches from Lalibela, a bit more to the south, are quite impressive.
On Christmas day, many believers gather into these churches; the
priests go to the top part of the church and chant old Ethiopian Orthodox
Church songs. The 11 churches of Lalibela are active for preaching and
other religious celebrations. The Saint George church is one of the most
spectacular structures in Lalibela. It is carved out of a single rock. It is
shaped in a form of a big cross. The church of Our Lady Mary of Zion is
quite well conserved.

every year. The Tabot (model of the Ark of the Covenant) of all churches
are escorted by the chanting clergy, and by people from the various ethnic
groups performing cultural dances. The Tabot are taken to the nearby
ponds and are escorted back to their respective churches the next day.
In Gondar, the Epiphany celebration is conducted next to a pond,
created by a king in the 7th century. Many people, including tourists take
part. This festival is also quite important in Aksum. This activity may
predate Christianity.
Once I went to visit a monastery in Japan, and when I listened to
Buddhist songs I thought that I was in Ethiopia; it was so similar. We are
all different all around the world, but, we do share lots of aspects of our
belief systems. When we travel, we see more similarity than differences
within the diversity of the religions. The religious songs and dances have
lots of common elements.

Synod of the Church of Greece. The theme of his contribution was how
different stakeholders are involved and can interact in religious and
pilgrimage sites, taking the UNESCO site of Meteora and its monasteries
as an example.
Jos Francisco Garca Fernndez, is a graduate in Business Sciences and
councilman of Festivities for Caravaca de la Cruz (Murcia). He presents the
unique case of the sanctuary of the True Cross and the fiestas celebrated
since the Middle Ages. He was, besides, founder and president of the
cultural association Pea Caballista Minipua (Horsemen club), that makes
part of the Bando de los Caballos del Vino (Wine Horses organization).
Luis Carlos Gil Aranda, tourism coordinator for the municipality of
vila, presented a new project the Route of Teresa of vilas steps. The
interest shown by visitors in the different episodes of the story of Teresa of
vila across the territory of Spain inspired this idea of a route to mark the
celebrations in 2015 of the birth of Teresa de Jess.
Fernando Olivera Rocha, gave a presentation about the difference
between tourists and devout pilgrims, explaining the practical issues of
receiving large numbers of religious tourists (pilgrims) and of secular
publics in the state of Guanajuato in Mexico, while enabling both groups
sufficient space and the possibility to enjoy the particular experience they
are seeking.
The Council of Europes cultural routes programme puts emphasis on
cultural tourism as a means of ensuring democratic access to culture and
cultural heritage for all, while celebrating and preserving cultural diversity
in all its authenticity. Therefore it is important that tangible and intangible
religious heritage not be restricted to those who practise a particular
religion, but be open to the broadest possible range of visitors, proposing
an informative, learning experience. This, of course, requires sensitive and
careful management, which the participants in this session of the Elche
Congress demonstrated throughout the very different sites described.

please understand that these form probably the largest section of cultural
tourism in the world. They are alas, also the most endangered: with
secularization, the religious groups diminish, this is followed by lack of
money for the up-keep and finally the set might change into any use instead
of a religious one; we do have enough examples of religious buildings
changing into restaurant, discotheque or simply disappear.
From my personal experience as a tourist guide in Vienna (Austria),
the cathedral of Saint Stephen is the main guest attraction with almost
4 million out of the 12 million in 2013. The Vienna Chair has regular
meetings with all tourism partners, sends out information and lets us
know if and when the cathedral will not permit visitors due to church
services. The tourist guides, on the other hand, will not interrupt during
mass, they explain to their guests about the entrance fee that adds directly
to restoration; yet the church is open to all, worshipper and tourist. For
the past eight years the cathedral has a separate area for paying visitors:
they can get nearer to the art work, have the possibility of entering the
treasury, visit the crypt and/or watch restoration work in process. Groups
get a discount for musical performances.
Westminster Abbey
I have no idea how many visitors Westminster Abbey receives, but I do
know that every ten minutes they announce via a loud speaker two
minutes of silence and prayer. Fantastic! Open the famous place to all,
remind them of the origins and sense of the building, include everyone
in the contemplation. Westminster Abbey also trains blue badge guides
to permit them to guide within their area. By asking for an entrance
fee, restoration is subsidized, the guides become major contributors of
sponsoring and the income helps the survival of their religious heritage.
Similar we find in Austria: all qualified and licensed tourist guides take
a special seminar for any of the churches/abbeys or museums in order to
permit them to guide within their walls; they need updates and proof of
their abilities at regular intervals. Thus I can show most of these places
of worship; I give you some examples of excellent cooperation between
tourism partners in order to survive the site.
St Michaels in Vienna like the Berlin Church of Commemoration
offers a stunning effect: entering this gorgeous medieval building you
hear faint organ music; this changes your mood immediately, you stop,
you look around and discover this is how you can lead your visitor to
a new experience and appreciation. Without the visitor, the place might
208
209
www.kaipachanews.blogspot.pe

not survive: people come and are impressed, they leave a donation, buy a
candle or postcard and that brings money for survival.
What costs more than anything else, is the former burial ground in the
crypt: innumerable bodies were buried until the Enlightenment changed it
in 1781: the burials were forbidden, the ventilation was completely stopped
by closing any window, the bodies mummified. It certainly is a discovery
for historians, archaeologists and medical doctors, but it also attracts many
visitors. Today, this is one of the attractions and one of the deep sorrows:
yes, you do get headlines of the macabre underworld, but in truth, it costs
to keep bacteria and bugs away, install dehydration and air condition. This
crypt has turned into a religious heritage; in early days you would expect
the bodies to turn back into dust from where they were taken, according
to Christian belief.
Heritage and mission
Another example might be Altenburg Abbey in the Northern part of
Lower Austria, starting years ago an intensive programme for restoration
and excavation of the medieval areas, called Heritage and Mission. This
was not done just for fun, but the later additions of the 18th century church
were endangered of collapsing, they lacked equivalent foundations and air
drainage for the walls.
In order to get sponsorship from regional and federal government, to
find private partnership, an intensive plan included various events:
Angels for Angels was introduced in 1994: the abbey has 1034
limestone Putti and additional 200 and more statues around the roof
and inside the abbey. Limestone erodes in the climate with wind and
rain, the statues endangered visitors with falling pieces. Private public
sponsorship PPP, was initiated to gain money for each sculpture.
Visit the Medieval: discoveries of the 12th 14th century cloister and
homestead buildings were opened to the public. Quite interesting to
learn about living conditions, the herbs then cultivated, food and drink
for the congregation; the production and income through agriculture
is one of the possible renewals today: hospitality and wellness.
Joyful Baroque: as the frescoes had to be cleaned and freed of
bacteria, an elevator for working staff was also opened for the public.
This brought a major part of the income for restoration and is quite
common practice today. Indeed, St Charles in Vienna contemplates
about leaving the elevator as attraction and income after restoration
is finished.
Conclusions
By installing all these alternatives, the abbey remained open to visitors
actually attracted more than ever before. We all know that events bring
tourists, and usually those with special interests very valuable economic
multipliers. The guests numbers jumped from 7,000 in 1994 to 35,000
today, the newly created attractions around it profited as well.
Take Melk Abbey along the Danube River, where tourism today is
responsible for 70% of the income. But if you have 2.2 hectares of roof
to renew, it means a major investment, you need guests to come. Engage
in contemporary interpretation of your history, organize organ concerts,
promote your site by inviting to a theatre and music festival, create an
Association of Friends, include the locals: together, you will succeed in
creating interest.
Thousands of tourists will come and queue-up, it is time to think about
sustainability too. You need infrastructure for waiting guests, reserve a
time slot for entering like Versailles Castle or any special art exhibit today.
We all know that masses of people bring humidity only with their breath,
not to speak of clothes on rainy days create cloakrooms and museum
shops! New cooperation between nearby attractions needs to be installed,
places need to restrict to a certain number of visitors thus enabling the
survival of the place and supporting the interest of tourists. Quality needs
planning ahead!

hours (10 12 and 14 16). Where, when not in the religious site should
the worshipper find consolation? No, sanctuaries need to be open for the
believers their original reason for creation and additionally should
attract visitors, to give them a better knowledge of the site: without this
educational intention, we fail to fulfil the original task of the place; it needs
to promote community and understanding.
It is of great importance that we keep religious heritage as a major
educational input for understanding our alter ego on this universe and to
prevent hatred and wars. It is the past of which we all gain our future we
should not lose it!

conserved building from the Roman period. The wall itself is a relic of the
monument that the Romans destroyed in the year 70 A.D., visitors now go
on pilgrimage and worship this place.
Muslims worshipped Jerusalem since the 7th century. The oldest Muslim
temples are not in Saudi Arabia, nor in Syria, nor in Iraq, but in Jerusalem,
just on top of the mount. All Muslims worship Jerusalem with the name of
Al-Aqsa (in the Quran, chapter 17 it means the farthest mosque).
A 144 thousand m2 building (equal to12 football fields), was built by king
Herod to accommodate all the pilgrims coming to the temple during Jewish
holidays. The Western Wall is a relic of that huge compound. Nowadays
all Jews around the world adore the Western Wall. Every year, around six
million Jews, pray here. About four million Muslims are coming to pray in
Al-Aqsa and millions of tourists are visiting both sites. Why is it called the
western wall? When the temple existed, it was situated in the western part
of the mountain. The Ark of the Covenant was in the holy of holies inside
the temple, and hence, the wall has become sacred and well known.
People, when they come to visit Jerusalem, always visit the Western Wall
as the most important and sacred place in Jerusalem, a unique heritage site
that is a part of all monotheistic religions.

which religious tourism, for visits during the whole year. The Synodical
Office of Pilgrimage Tours and Development of Religious Tourism of the
Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, to which I have the honor to be a
member, has undertaken in 2013 a research project,1 to evaluate relevant
characteristics of religious tourism.
Results showed that religious excursions are arranged all over all
the Greek regions; the tour operators and travel agents who responded
indicated that pilgrimage excursions corresponded to about 30% of their
activities, while mixed excursions, including visits to religious sites,
accounted for 32%; issuing tickets, hotel reservations, organizing guides
and transport accounted for the remaining 38% of their activities.
Meteora, third most popular destination
The itinerary of the Steps of Saint Paul is well known. The survey indicated
that the most popular destinations for these excursions, after Athens and
Thessaloniki (both of religious interest as well as historic interest), Meteora is the site that attracts the highest demand by tourists.
There are today 6 monasteries (of the original 24) that can be visited. The
first monks probably arrived in the area in the 10th century, fully settled in the
11th, and the monastic community fully developed in the 14th century, after
Turkish occupation of the Byzantine Empire. By the 17th to 18th century the
monk population had dwindled, and some monasteries were abandoned.
Unfortunately, the site was bombed during the Second World War and a
great number of treasures housed in the original 24 monasteries were lost.
Meteora is estimated to receive over a million visitors annually, being
the most visitable site in Greece after the Acropolis and the Acropolis
museum. In a local survey undertaken,2 respondents were asked which
three activities visitors preferred, and the visits to the religious sites
(monasteries) were mentioned by the largest percentage, close to 95%,
the outdoor activities, like climbing and nature sports by 24%, and other
nature based activities, by 18%. The majority (about 2/3) of the visitors
are foreign, most coming only once, for a short day visit, while only about
30% are estimated to stay one overnight. Approximately 78% of the local
visitors come for religious reasons.

Focusing on the reason for visiting a religious site, we know that, for
pilgrims, it is faith, but also a very large part of visitors claim cultural
reasons. We have many Eastern Asia visitors in Meteora and they obviously
do not come for faith, but for the natural wonders, for the cultural aspects
and for the unique architecture.
Some visitors have pre-planned their travel and come on purpose, while
most are in Greece on a summer holiday, and come by a day-excursion to
Meteora, hence the many day visitors.
Two approaches
Thus, we examine the religious sites, from two approaches: (1) the touristic
approach, which interests the tourism stakeholders, and (2) the religious
functionality of the site, which is the primary interest of the religious authorities. These approaches differentiate the corresponding responsibilities and
the conflicts of the use of the religious site/shrine: the touristic approach
which deals with the accessibility, facilitation of the visit and promotion
as a tourist attraction, and the ecclesiastical approach which requires that
the site be managed with the applications of religious regulations, for dress
code, visit hours, photographic restrictions, veneration of relics, etcetera.
The stakeholders are many: the religious authorities, the local tourism
professionals, the tour operators and travel agents who arrange the
excursions, the guides, the local Government, and the State. All have
intermingling, occasionally overlapping, and often conflicting scope
in their approach of the religious site/shrine, and different interests,
responsibilities, functions and authority.
In Greece we have more than a hundred dioceses (autonomous local
religious administrations), we have approximately 350 municipalities and,
of course, the local tourism enterprises and professionals, the tour operators
and the travel agents, and the State, that does the overall regulation.
One of the examples of the interaction conflicts related to the
development of a network of hiking trails around the monasteries and
the improvement of signposting and of the local road network, which met
with objections from the monastic community for safety reasons, for the
possibility of disturbance during religious services, and for possible safety
reasons. Another conflict logically developed on the usage of the rocks for
climbing tourism activities so popular in this area ideal for this sport. Yet
another put at opposition the monasteries and the local touristic souvenirs
enterprises, for the selling of religious items (such as icons, rosaries, etc.)
or mementos, photographs, books.

Caravaca de la Cruz is a town located in the Northeast of Murcia, with
a population of more than 26,000 people. Its history is intricately linked
to the presence of the Holy and Vera Cruz, Lignum cruces. The relic is
deeply rooted in popular devotion, which has made our city a permanent
Christian pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages. Knowledge of the
Caravaca cross extends throughout Europe and America, the fruit of the
labor of Spanish missionaries, particularly Jesuits.
The Military Order of the Temple was responsible for safeguarding the
Vera Cruz de Caravaca. After the dissolution of the Order of the Temple,
Caravaca was one of the last bastions of the cross, with all the mystical
implications this entails. Later, for more than five centuries, the Order of
Santiago marked the evolution of the circumstances surrounding the cross
on this side of the border: under its custody, the development of traditional
rituals and the most important events involving the relic unfolded.
Military and religious orders
Military and religious orders grew and settled in Caravaca, seeking the
shelter and protection of the cross. Today, one can imagine the sensation
that the Knights Templar, santiaguista knights, Carmelites, Franciscans and
Jesuits must have felt standing there with the very relic before their eyes.
The awarding in 1583 and 1621 of special jubilees to visitors formalized
the ancient pilgrimage nature of Caravaca. In 1768, Clement XIII issued
two briefs granting various privileges for the main festivals involving the
cross that are celebrated in Caravaca.
With the aim of promoting, spreading and maintaining worship of the
Vera Cruz, the Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of the Holy and Vera
Cruz of Caravaca came into existence. The documented origins of the
Brotherhood date back to the Middle Ages, and by the 17th century it had
already been canonically established based on the constitutions of Clement
VIII and Paul V.

The following list reflects the order in which the rituals are performed
during the festivals, not their degree of importance and seniority:
1. Commemorative mass on the appearance of the cross.
2. Blessing of the wine. First bathing of the cross.
3. Blessing of the flowers, a rite linked to that of the wine.
4. Carrera de los Caballos del Vino (Wine Horses Race).
5. Act of delivery, exit and procession of descent of the cross.
6. Solemn mass of the festivity of the discovery of the cross.
7. Procession to the bathing area. Discourse before the blessing of
the water.
8. Bathing of the cross in the water.
9. Cross of the disabled.
10. Procession of ascent of the cross to the sanctuary. Blessing of the
fields and nature.
The ritual of the blessing of nature is also performed during the fall
and spring equinoxes in the Sala de Conjuros (the Spell Room), a chapel
situated at the highest point of the fortress, for the purpose of warding off
bad weather damaging to crops.
A distinguishing feature is the Wine Horses Race. Its origin lies in the
ritual of the blessing of the wine, and the Autonomous Community of
the Region of Murcia declared the race a cultural heritage event. Since
2012, the Caravaca celebrations have been candidates for inclusion on the
UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
These centuries-old traditions have been passed down from generation to
generation. More than mere celebrations, the festivities have become one of
the most important identifying features of the city. They embody a historical
and anthropological legacy that unifies disparate elements of society and
involves, at the same time, some of the most original rituals and most
brilliant and exciting instances of the rich repertoire of Spanish festivals.

It also offers a great historical and heritage wealth, which provides the

series of convents, churches and other spaces in which the Catholic religion
took root in our country. At the beginning of the 19th century, pilgrimages
began to be organized, mainly to Mexico City and the basilica of Our Lady
of Guadalupe. Similarly, places such as capillas de indios, or Indian chapels,
were created. These chapels, while not considered churches, allowed the
missionaries to integrate aspects of pre-Hispanic culture, inserting elements
of Catholicism. Around 1930, a phenomenon emerged in the central part
of the country: the Cristero War and the persecution of Catholicism. Some
convents and churches were destroyed, many of which were later rebuilt.
In the case of Guanajuato, the most important monument is Cristo Rey,
or Christ King, which sits atop Cubilite Hill, the geographic center of the
country. 2.4 million pilgrims visit the Cristo Rey monument every year.
Holy Week is, without a doubt, the most important time of the year in
terms of the arrival of pilgrims and religious tourists. Two million people
visit the state of Guanajuato alone to attend its celebrations, resulting in a
great deal of economic activity.
Two types of visitors
We can identify two types of visitors: the visitor that pilgrimages towards
a destination and is interested in the experience of the route, discovering
at the same time the opportunity to enjoy these places again; and the
visitor that travels directly to a place, driven by motives beyond the purely
religious aspect, staying in one of the cities and undertaking a series of
routes from there.
Guanajuato is the only Mexican state that can boast two Heritage of
Humanity cities. It also has four thousand sites or properties of historic
interest and a program that we call Pueblos Mgicos, or Magical Villages,
which includes five of the 80 magical villages in the country. This has
resulted in the creation of cultural routes where we have already established
a series of hotels and spaces, allowing the traveler to design a program in
which self-knowledge, peace and introspection are the main objectives.
Devout pilgrims generally come as a family, and their visits are linked to
an event. They tend to make use of very basic transportation travelling
by truck, foot or bicycle, because they are making a pilgrimage. The
cultural visitor, meanwhile, has a larger budget and uses his or her
holidays to get to know these places. The introspective tourist who
we are encouraging to visit our different cultural centers and cities
represents, in our analysis, a potential of nearly 700 thousand people
in upcoming years. The devout visitor, who attends a specific event for

Public access
In the province of Friesland the Foundation of Frisian Churches successfully
organizes an open church building project (www.tsjerkepaad.nl). In a clever
way this foundation ensures that volunteers are deployed in an extremely
effective way, namely upon request, in order to facilitate public access to a
large number of church buildings during the summer season.
Many church buildings are of great architectural beauty. In recent years
for a large number of the church buildings that are not in religious use
anymore, a new destination is found, often related to a tourist function.
Examples can be found on the website www.herbestemming.nu.The
next coming years undoubtedly vacant church buildings will get another
appropriate and attractive destination. Unfortunately for a large number
however, due to lack of economic perspective, this will not be the case.
I conclude my speech, however, by expressing hope. It is striking that
many young people are interested in religious heritage. The involvement of
youngsters, often in the role of volunteers or, in religious heritage is most
important, and encouraging their interest is something the Program bets
on heavily. After all, they are the treasure keepers of the future. Therefore I
refer to a piece of art of the young Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, who
made a Lotus Dome (dome-shaped luminescent interactive artistic
installation) in the Sainte Marie Madeleine Church in Lille (www.

For several decades, the Misteri dElx (Mystery Play of Elche) was defined
as a sacred lyrical drama (Rodrguez Maci, 2013:104) representing the
death of the Virgin Mary and her assumption into heaven. However,
although the designation Misteri has been extended and generalized,
the genuine name is Festa, a word in Valencian language. And in
Valencian language are sang all the songs of this religious celebration.
This terminology issue is not trivial, since this is indeed a festa (fiesta): the
major festival of Elche, a town where the Assumption has been celebrated
at least since the first century after the conquering of the town by James I.1
The fervor for this Marian devotion has traditionally led the inhabitants
of Elche to identify themselves as the chosen by the Lady of the Assumption
herself as the Assumption people. This is shown in the legend of the Coming
of the Virgin, which places in the fourteenth century the miraculous
discovery of a chest on the shore of the Tamarit beach, containing her efigy
and an indication: Sc per a Elig (Im for Elche).
Space and time
As a traditional festival of the town, the celebration occurs in a specific and
indissoluble portion of space and time. A space-time continuum. The scene
of the Festa is located in the heart of the old walled village of Elche, namely
in the basilica of Santa Mara, and the distance that mediates between it
and the hermitage of San Sebastin. The time is the 14th and 15th of August,
since the representation is carried to term in two parts: the first one called
Vespra (Eve) takes place on the 14th and the second one called Festa, on
the 15th. I insist on this festive dimension of the Misteri because it is its
rationale, the reason for its name and what has kept it alive for centuries,
despite the vicissitudes which has gone through, including economic or
other types of crisis, wars and proscriptions, as that of the Council of Trent
1 We cannot assure these early celebrations concerned the Misteri. Probably they were simply the
festival of the Assumption in August.
244
245

through the spaces where it is held and thanks to the museums dedicated
to it (Museum of the Festa and Museum of the Virgin), but without the
experience that involves the representation, a critical aspect, since the
Misteri is, largely, an experience. As to illustrate in figures this issue, in
2013, a year of performances only in August, the Museum of the Festa was
visited by 10,108 persons, of which only 565 happened in August.
We also have biennial representations commemorating the dogma of
the Assumption, which take place in late October during even years. But
during these representations the visitor misses some of the characteristic
components of the Festa time. Namely, the heat, which has resulted in
so many local and popular sayings, the absolutely compulsory presence
of fans (Camera i Sempere, 2001), the noise and the smells of the Nit de
lAlb (night of the dawn, a festival in which the people of Elche launch
thousands of fireworks. At midnight, a huge firework, called the Virgins
palm is launched from the basilica of Santa Mara) and La Ro (a procession
in which people carry candles, representing the Virgins wake).
Needless to say that the perception will be very different due to the lack
of what Bakhtin called the festive atmosphere (1965:14), although this is
much more complete than that of people who only had the possibility to
visit a museum.
Visitors and local people
Finally, there are those tourists who do go to experience the Misteri together
with residents in any of the 1,500 seats offered every session by the basilica
of Santa Mara. They will have a direct experience and fully informed
knowledge. Their discourses and practices are the most interesting for us,
but cannot be limited to the time right after representations. Those are
busy and brief moments, which adds to the fact that tourists and residents
do not tend to know each other in advance of the celebration. Besides, this
is exactly the moment when the locals greet each other as members of the
society of Elche.
The research should extend to what is said or expressed much later, for
example, in private conversations, Internet forums, surveys or press news
and releases, not to relegate most of the opinions from the 7,500 people
who come every year to see the Misteri, according to official estimates. This
figure almost doubles in even years, with double representations, reaching
13,500 people (7,500 in August and 6,000 in October-November).
So far, the presence of tourists in the Misteri has not raised conflicts or
significant drawbacks. Neither seems surprising that the Festa triggers
curiosity and attracts the most devoted, although historically the most
common attitude was a reluctance to expose it to foreign judgments
(Llobregat, 1977: 58). However, as a celebration and hallmark of a people,
it has been a traditional pattern of behavior of the municipal government
or local personalities to use it to attract the visit of VIPs.
Two examples to illustrate this practice follow: the first one, an invitation
to the governor of Orihuela and high representatives of the Goverment of
Alicante and Murcia, which was made by the Municipal Council already
in 1587 (Rodrguez Maci, 2013: 93); the second example had a negative
effect for the city. In August of 1897, Pere Ibarra invited Pierre Paris to
see the Misteri. As a result of his visit, this French hispanicist acquired
the statue of the Lady of Elche, since the discovery of this famous Iberian
sculpture coincided in time with the celebration of the Festa.
Gardens of the Virgin
We cannot forget that, for centuries, the Misteri has been an attraction for
visitors who came from neighboring towns during the August holidays to
see the performances. There was even a space where camping was allowed
on these days: the gardens of the Virgin, in what is now the City Park.
But all these motivations to attract or come to the Festa, where there is a
mix of local pride and ethnocentrism, curiosity and/or religious devotion,
reaches new heights with its proclamation as a Masterpiece of Oral and
Intangible Heritage of Humanity. A declaration that was partly the fruit of a
brand strategy that established, among other aims, to enhance the heritage of
Elche with the explicit purpose of attracting cultural and congress tourists,
thus diversifying the urban economy when its main engine, the footwear
industry, began to decline. The intention was not to focus on the Misteri to
attract tourism; but of course, it was clearly identified as attractive to tourists
(Carmona and Nogus, 2010). This issue has turned into a main focus of
tensions and has raised fears that the Festa was at risk of being commodified.
Meanwhile, beyond governments and municipalities, residents in Elche
do not seem too convinced of the power of the Mystery play as tourist
attraction; they have a similar feeling also about other elements of their
heritage, such as the palm groves of Elche. Although since the inclusions
of these elements in the UNESCO list, the people from Elche admit they
value them more now (Carmona and Nogus, 2010). In addition, tourism
is still not perceived as a relevant activity. Elche, for its residents, remains an
industrial city. Although this conception does not correspond to the actual
distribution of the population in economic sectors, it does respond to a clear

cultural and religious events offer to our territory and the challenges we
face. The cultural and tourism policy of the regional government of Castilla
y Len has been determined during the current term in office by three
key strands: institutional coordination and public-private partnerships,
internationalization and marketing support.
The objective is to improve the international position of Castilla y Len
as a tourist destination, as our community relies heavily on national market
and the crisis had a huge impact on the tourism industry. It is also aimed at
the economic sustainability of heritage and cultural events through private
sector collaboration and pursuing effective strategic partnerships which
could allow a wider promotion. Last but not least, this policy seeks to
create opportunities and support the marketing of the cultural sector and
the tourism industry by employers in order to stimulate a better territorial
development and a greater regional economic dynamism.
The cultural events that take place in Castilla y Len do not only achieve
to place us up to date in media reporting offering therefore a greater
national and international visibility, but also to develop a temporary
attraction for the population, who normally cant resist the temptation.
Las Edades del Hombre
Las Edades del Hombre (The Ages of Man) stands out from all the other
cultural events due to its importance and reception and so, year after
year, the regional government of Castilla y Len devotes its efforts and
support to it.
The exhibitions of Las Edades del Hombre are the result of the
organisational and promotional efforts of the Ministry of Culture and Las
Edades del Hombre foundation in their joint work. An integral management
agreement has allowed, in the course of its 25 years of existence, that these
remarkable religious art pieces most of which come from the diocese
of Castilla y Len have become a hallmark and an event that, after 19
editions, has been visited by more than ten million people.
Las Edades del Hombre is not only an exhibition of religious art pieces
which seldom leave their enclosed convents in Castilla y Len, but also
a local economy stimulus and a job-creating event that contributes to
territorial development. In 2012 there were 226,000 visitors and 300,000
more in 2014 (33% more), all of whom did not only enjoyed the exhibition,
but also tasted our gastronomy, bought souvenirs, visited museums and
vineyards, passed the night and recommended the experience to their
circle of friends.
In its last edition, which closed on the 10th of November 2014 in Aranda
de Duero (Burgos), comparative figures of tourism growth in the province
between May and September were given, with a rise of 8% in the number of
visitors and 9% in the number of overnight stays compared to the preceding
year. This increase was even more significant in the rural tourism sector, a
rise of 20% in the number of travellers and 21% in overnight stays.
The economic impact on the municipality has also been very important,
with the creation of 60 new trade initiatives and a 40% increase in the
volume of hotel and catering business.
Other events that are managed by the regional government of Castilla
y Len are the International Festival of the Arts of Castille and Leon
(FACYL) and the International Circus Festival (CIR&Co) in the months
of June and September respectively. Both complement the festival offer
of the World Heritage Cities, as well as the International Puppet Theatre
of Segovia (Titirimundi), which takes place in the month of May. These
three festivals for young audience and families have gathered 195,541
spectators in 2014.
The Holy Week in Castilla y Len with eight Fiestas of International
Tourist Interest, three of National Tourist Interest and eleven of Regional
Tourist Interest is another important cultural and religious event that
attracts an increasing number of tourists and visitors year after year. This
festivity is also able to stimulate the local economy in only 10 days, with a
significant increase of travellers and overnight stays.
Marketing in the events
The regional government of Castilla y Len is carrying on interesting
marketing strategies, with the objective of creating a brand and promoting
Castilla y Len as a tourist destination. We base our strategy on experience, as
we want our tourists not only to watch the spectacle, but to live it themselves.
For instance, during the Holy Week we held a competition through the
social networks, with the prize of living it from the inside, becoming a
part of the brotherhoods and feeling at first hand the weight of a float, the
emotion of the preparations, and the comradeship between the members.
We also presented a short documentary, which went viral through the
Internet and the social networks.
In the case of the exhibitions from Las Edades del Hombre, we have
been working hand in hand with the cultural and tourism sector in the last
editions in order to allow the visitors to live a complete experience. With
this purpose in mind, we created the card Edades, which offers discounts

and advantages in many services such as catering, accommodation, the
purchase of gastronomy products, active tourism, museums and vineyards
visits and so on.
Besides, we have been also working with the hotel and catering business
leaders from vila and Salamanca, so during the FACYL and CIR&Co
festivals the sector will participate and make their customers know about
these events through the creation of the FACYL pincho (bite to eat), the
decoration of their establishments with circus motifs and the creation of
dishes and menus which are related to the circus. At the same time, we
have been collaborating with different collectives and associations, so these
festivals would be lived and heard of all around the city, with activities in
the streets and workshops for kids.
St. Teresa of Jesus foundations
We cant predict the future or from a promotional, media, touristic and
economic point of view the repercussions of the Fifth Centenary of the
Birth of St. Teresa of Jesus in Spain and, more specifically, in Castilla y Len.
What we do know is that we are committing ourselves to this unprecedented
plan, which will have a great impact on our community, where the saint was
born and died and where you can find nine of her foundations.
The Ministry of Culture of Castilla y Len regional government has
designed an app (rutateresianacyl) and a brochure with a St. Teresa route that
goes around the nine religious foundations, though not in the chronological
order: vila, Segovia, Soria, Burgos, Palencia, Valladolid, Medina del Campo
(Valladolid), Salamanca and Alba de Tormes (Salamanca). With this, we
intend to make people know their tourist, gastronomic and cultural resources
as well as the different programmed activities.
In 2015 Castilla y Len is going to be Teresa and Teresa is going to be Castilla
y Len. We hope this event will help us placing ourselves at a national and
international level as a major destination, not only because of its cultural
and religious tourism but also because of its natural and ecological heritage,
attracting thousands of tourists for St. Teresas year and the future.

The year 2014 has been decisive for the tourism sector and the religious
heritage in the city of Quebec (Canada). Its two cathedrals, Notre-Dame
(Catholic) and the Holy Trinity (Anglican) have been very active from
a tourism point of view. Regarding Catholic events, several were held in
commemoration of the 350th anniversary of the basilica of Notre-Dame de
Quebec, including the opening of its Holy Door and the canonization of
both Archbishop Franois de Laval and Ursuline Marie de lIncarnation. As
for Anglican events, a major project was started for the development of the
cathedral of the Holy Trinity after several years of planning; this includes
giving the basilica the role of a theatre and the opening of a permanent
exhibition to show the royal jewellery.
In 2011, a research study was carried out in order to outline the profile
of religious and spiritual tourists in Quebec, focusing in their four national
sanctuaries. The Religious Heritage and Tourism Corporation of Quebec
hired the company Lger to develop a report on the types of visitors the
three emblematic churches of Old Quebec receive.1 This study was funded
by the Tourism Office, the City Council, and the Ministry of Culture
and Communication of Quebec. The results of the surveys taken at the
churches, when there were no religious services, have helped to guide
and facilitate the decision-making on development, communication and
promotion strategies for each of the churches.2
Introduction
Basilica-cathedral Notre-Dame de Quebec: This is the Primatial Church
of Canada, seat of the Archdiocese of Quebec, and the oldest diocesan seat
north of Mexico. It is also the oldest parish in North America. Given the rank
of minor basilica in 1874, and later declared historical monument in 1966.

the field of marketing, research and surveys. Mr. Byrne does not claim all of the intellectualpropertyof

three reasons (87%, 79% and 50% respectively). Among the 13 reasons given
by the surveyed visitors, five are religious in nature (19% of comments). In
general, visitors whose primary interest was to visit the church were more
numerous than those who did not visit the church for religious reasons
(38% against 16%). There is also a higher percentage of religious reasons
among local visitors (24%, versus 84% of non-religious reasons).
The activities and most used services
The most popular type of visit to the church is by far the free visit (92%).
Only a few attended concerts, shows, exhibitions or other special event
(2%), few chose a guided tour (2%) or visited the church store (2%).
Visitors who took a guided tour were satisfied with their experience
(average satisfaction rating: 8.7 out of 10).
Most said they preferred to visit the church by themselves (72%), while
14% preferred to take the guided tour, and 4% chose the audioguide.
Very satisfied
For the three churches, overall satisfaction of the experience is very high.
In fact, more than six in ten visitors (63%) were very satisfied, 34% fairly
satisfied, and only 2% little satisfied. These results translate into an average
satisfaction score of 9 out of 10, which represents a very high rating. Hikers
and tourists are in general satisfied with their visit to the church (8.9 and
9 out of 10, that is, similar results). However, it is worth noting that more
tourists than hikers said they were very satisfied (65% versus 54% of hikers).
Visiting other places in the region
During their stay in the region of Quebec, 93% of the visitors had planned
or had already visited other attractions in the region without any religious
connotation. When asked if they planned to visit or had visited another
place of religious attractive, 53% answered affirmatively. Besides the three
emblematic churches of Old Quebec, the basilica of Sainte-Anne-deBeaupr is amongst the most visited religious sites (17% intended to visit
it or had already visited it).
During the summer of 2013, the estimated tourism spending that was
generated in the region of Quebec in connection with the visit to the
Notre-Dame Cathedral in Quebec, the cathedral of the Holy Trinity and
the Church of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires amounted to $ 9.7 million. These
spending were made by 52,966 visitors, taking into account relevance
indices, whose main purpose was to visit the church. In total, excluding
254
255
www.kaipachanews.blogspot.pe
Tommy Byrne
expenses related to religious practice, visitors spent an average of $ 10.90.
This amount translates to $ 12.50 in the cathedral of Notre-Dame, $ 20.50
at the Holy Trinity and $ 5.60 in Notre-Dame-des-Victoires.
The study indicates that tourists spent more than hikers. However,
visitors whose main interest was the church were the biggest spenders: an
average of almost $ 25.
Conclusions
The study carried out in the three emblematic churches of Old Quebec has
raised several observations.
The first is that tourists attracted by the three churches are mostly
international (58%). These data contrast sharply with the origin of
the other visitors to the region: only 10% are international visitors.
Furthermore, they stay more nights (3) than the average tourist in the area
(2.5). Therefore, they generate more taxes than the average tourist visitors
do in the region of Quebec.
The second observation is that the focused visitor spends almost twice
as the rest of visitors. The number of persons travelling together is larger
than the average: in general, the number of persons travelling together is
2.6 persons, compared with 1.5 for the regional average.
The third point raised is fundamental for a study on religious heritage.
The visitor of the three churches has a cultural profile, not a religious one.
Although they visit other religious monuments during their stay, they are
interested in the architectural and historical aspects of those places.
In conclusion, it is clear that the emblematic churches are not a destination
in themselves, but they increase visibility and represent a bonus for the
tourist experience. Since visitors are mostly not Quebecers, it is natural
that they make the most of their stay visiting the religious heritage. The
emblematic churches are bound to become, hence, an essential place to
visit in Old Quebec.

of the Dome of the Rock, or the Foundation Stone, where it is said that
Mohammed ascended to heaven, and Al-Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest
site in Islam). Both are located on the so-called Esplanade of the Mosques.
In the Jewish Quarter, we find the Wailing Wall, or Western Wall, the last
vestige of the disappeared Temple of Jerusalem, the holiest site in Judaism.
With this background, it is not surprising that Jerusalem, in particular,
and Israel, in general, are highly desirable destinations for the religious
traveler. Studying the data on Spanish visitors, we find that in 2012,
43% indicated they made the trip for religious reasons, compared to the
remaining 37% who did so for cultural or leisure purposes. In 2013, the
percentage was 32% religious tourists and 29% cultural tourists.
In regard to the main organizers of these trips, according to data from
the Office for the Promotion of Israel in Spain, 58% were promoted by
Christian religious organizations, a figure that rose to 60% in 2013. All
of this confirms the strength of Israel as a religious destination for the
Spanish market.
The limited spending by religious tourists (in particular, pilgrims,
the prevailing ones in this case) and the need to change the politicized
and polemical image of the destination have forced Tourism of Israel
to rethink its promotional strategy, focusing its efforts on offering an
alternative vision. It involves selling not only the already known and by now
commonplace religious aspects of the country, but its more playful side
as well, emphasizing the thermal and medicinal potential of the mineral
waters of the Dead Sea; the countrys gastronomical wealth; its UNESCO
World Heritage sites; its landscapes; the magic of the desert; the shopping
opportunities and architecture. Tourism of Israel also promotes the events
and modernity of cities like Tel Aviv, which has become a point of reference
for gay tourism, exemplifying the contrasts of Israel as a tourist destination.
The Way to Nidaros
Saint Olaf s Way is a new product in which Tourism of Norway has
invested heavily. It is a 640-kilometer pilgrimage route that begins in Oslo
and culminates at Nidaros Cathedral, in Trondheim.
The route is dedicated to Olaf the Holy, a mythical figure for many
Norwegians (mostly Protestants), who increasingly pay homage to
this Viking king responsible for the Christianization of their country.
Christianity had already been established in Norway when in the year 1030,
Olaf died in a battle fought very close to Trondheim, in those times called
Nidaros. The body of Olaf II was transferred to the place where the High
Altar of the cathedral is located today, which is also where the pilgrimage
ends. Many miraculous events are associated with the figure of Olaf, ones
that culminated in his prompt canonization in 1041. With the arrival of the
Protestant Reformation to Norway in 1540, pilgrimages were prohibited.
To discourage travelers, the new religious leaders removed Olaf s remains
from his tomb and buried them in an unknown space inside the same
cathedral (some believe they might be under the chancel). Despite all this,
pilgrims kept arriving, and the old way, which at this time came to be called
the Kings Way (the drawing of a crown can still be seen at different points
along the route), continued to offer succor to all walks of life.
At the end of the 20th century, the Norwegian government decided to
recover the old route, later promoting it as a tourism product. Saint Olaf s
Way is now a tangible reality for people interested in making a pilgrimage
to holy places as well as for admirers of beautiful landscapes.
Beyond culture and faith, its main attraction is the opportunity to enjoy
nature in a pristine and impeccable state, which Norwegians venerate and
respect like a god. Nature is my religion, is a common statement among them.
The symbol of Saint Olaf s Way attests to this: a flower and a cross
exemplify the strong union between faith and natural beauty.
The route is very new. While each year finds more pilgrims arriving from
different countries, statistical data does not exist. What is known, however,
according to Innovation Norway, in Oslo, is that aside from the local market
and the growing number of pilgrims from Sweden and Denmark, there are
signs of growing interest among German, Belgium and Dutch travelers.
The challenges of this new tourism product are investing in infrastructure,
such as the maintenance and signposting of routes; encouraging private
investment in the opening of hotels, hostels, restaurants and tourism
service companies; and launching targeted promotional campaigns aimed
at market priorities in order to consolidate the route and contribute to its
commercialization.

also support the celebration of a procurement market specializing in
cultural and religious tourism, organized by Castile-Len.
Religion has played a major role in the history of humanity, leaving behind
vestiges and traditions that constitute an attraction for millions of tourists.
Religious tourism is closely linked to cultural experience. Not in vain, the
United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO)
estimates that more than 77% of Heritage of Humanity assets are religious
in origin. Religious tourism is extremely valuable in the transmission
and protection of cultural heritage and has a high diversifying potential
regarding tourism demand. For these reasons, Turespaas promotional
strategy envisions supporting this tourism product, one still modest at the
moment but with immense possibilities for development and growth.
